First game @ PSU (update)

  • Heading up to my first game in Happy Valley this weekend - any tips or must sees? Always enjoy seeing new places, but Beaver Stadium has always been on to-see list. Also any more idea on Mauti? Saw the team statement didn't really give any details, but figured you guys might have some additional info. Thanks and go Penn State!

  • Definitely check out the creamery (I know its kind of cold for ice cream but its definitely a State College staple). The town is pretty dead from what I hear this week due to the holidays. Still should be a good time! Have fun!

    Mauti is still waiting on an answer. Hopefully it isn't too bad.

    Downtown is pretty dead right now as all the students are on break. If you go on gameday though, that won't be a problem. Just check out the campus and downtown and you will see plenty of cool things. I'm not sure if you have ever been to UNC, but the downtown/campus is a bit similar in the the campus sits above the downtown strip only PSU's is a bit bigger with more to do.

  • Have definitely heard of the Creamery, will definitely be stopping there (although probably on Sunday, heard its crazy on Gamedays). I've been to some other big stadiums like Ohio St, Clemson, UVa (HAH, just kidding), so I'm looking forward to seeing how it stacks up. With no bowl game, hoping that you guys can end the year strong for the seniors and Bill O'Brien - as an outsider I could not have been more impressed with him.

    Unfortunately, it won't be the best atmosphere since the students won't be back yet from break. Expect 90-95k.

    Is that standard for the game after Thanksgiving or just this year given the current circumstances? Our game after Thanksgiving is always with UVa so its always full, only reason I won't be there this year is I'll because of boyfriend duties that are taking me to the area.

    Enjoy your first game in Beaver Stadium!

    Hitting up the Lion Shrine at the complete opposite end/corner of campus from Beaver Stadium is a must. Also, the creamery, like already mentioned too. Shops downtown. Old Main. If it wasn't going to be cold, I'd suggest the Arboretum as well.

    Two years ago we had game after Thanksgiving. Students are away for the most part until Sunday. Have heard they are opening the dorms early for students to come back early to go to game. It is mostly due to the Thanksgiving break. Dress warm, gonna be cold with some snow showers. Have fun!!

    Lion Shrine is a must see though BoomerVT.

    Thanks for the heads up, thankfully 4 years going to games in Blacksburg prepared me for the cold - especially the wind which I hear is another thing we share in common.

    I posted an attachment to a website to download a PDF map of Penn State University Park, and with some other information regarding our lovely campus.

    Just click on the link, then scroll down to where is says "Preview the Visitors' Guide as a PDF".
    Lots of GREAT information and very clearly shows all the roads and buildings and annotates some other interesting landmarks.

    There are tons of things to see around the campus. I hope you take the time to go take a look for yourself, and enjoy :)

    They usually arrive 2 and 1/2 hours before gametime. So approx. 1pm.

  • after the game, the best tour of campus would be to head down curtin rd from the stadium. head to the cremery at curtin and bigler. then continue down curtin until you get to shortlidge, make a left and walk past the newer buildings by the life science building. then make a right onto pollock and walk past the HUB make a left and a right and you'll end up right in front of Old Main which is great to see at night. Then proceed past Old Main and downtown will be to your left if you want grab dinner or go right to North campus and catch one of my favorite walks past the elm trees which takes you all the way to the library. Make a left on the otherside of the library back onto curtin and that will take you to the lion shrine.

    That would be my recommended path too. Maybe after you are done at the lion shrine get on the blue loop bus(free) at the library to get downtown if you want to go there.

    Hey Boomer, my wife is a Hokie and we used to live in Northern VA, so I've been to a lot (both good and bad) Tech games. I was at your Sugar Bowl game against Auburn a few years ago (2004?) too. Always have a great time down there too. Our schools have too many similarities and are too close to have never played. Hopefully some shit happens and we somehow end up in the same conference soon! Glad you had a good time at Penn State!

    By chance, were you in Champs around 1:00 PM on Saturday? There was a group of Hokie fans at the bar, just wondering if it was you.

    He had two timeouts left, and could've easily had at least 40 seconds or more left to get the ball back.

    Instead, being the coaching genius that he is, decided to use both of them to ice Cody Journell on what was pretty much a chip shot as time expired.
