Facilities rankings...

  • ESPN (I know who cares what they think) has ranked the facilities in the Big 10, and we come in at number 4, behind Mich, Neb, and OSU... I started to think, what renovations are we looking at and what has been approved? I stumbled upon this article speaking of HD scoreboards that were supposed to be completed for the Beav by this upcoming season. I know that Sandusky has probably complicated matters, but I was just wondering if anyone heard of anything that was actually being done, or a timetable for improvements. TIA. Links attached...

Penn State Exploring HD Video Boards for Beaver Stadium - Onward State

A letter from David Zehngut, a Penn State University Architect, to design professionals discloses that Penn State is looking into installing high-definition video boards at Beaver Stadium in time for the 2012 football season.

  • I have never seen any of Nebraska's facilities other than their stadium.

I believe the reason they put Michigan ahead of us was the new renovations to their stadium, and they claimed Beaver Stadium has "some issues" (although other than the outdated scoreboards I see no issues). And other than that we have very comparable facilities.

The No. 2 spot really could be a toss up between Nebraska, Michigan, and PSU with OSU being No. 1.

They're referring to the Press Box, which we've discussed here before. It's the one significant part of the stadium which is still stuck in the stone ages and requires an upgrade. I think the press box alone dropped PSUs ranking, considering the source.

  • I believe the new HD video scoreboards were pushed back a year so I'd expect them to come about for the 2013 season.

Ahhh yes... different article from what I read yesterday.

Here's the link to that thread where it was discussed...

    OT: Renovations to Beaver Stadium?

Just wondering if anyone can put any truth to this or not. It was briefly touched upon in my Engineering Design class, so I did some further

  • Thanks diddy, PSUjosh, and Kennetaw. +1's all around. Diddy, any time frame for the press box? Any idea if they are planning to renovate it any time soon?

From past conversations both on the board here and with people in the know, it will be sometime after the latest renovations from the early 2000s are paid off. Not sure what the status of that is though so I can't give you an exact time frame.

We did discuss that before. Two years ago, I was told that a capital campaign was in the works. However, things have obviously changed since then. The scoreboards will happen soon, but re-doing the Box will require some serious cash, and I don't think it's high on the priority list at the moment. It will happen eventually, but probably not for a little while.

Thanks again man. What were the details on that capital campaign? What all was discussed? Sorry for all the Q's but its good to know this info as a fan... Thanks in advance man. +1

  • The Penn State press box is terrible. PSU knows it. However, they have decided to focus on other areas first. This visting locker room has gotten better, but I know a lot of teams do not really like it.

However, the Big Ten has some of the best facilities in all of college football. Penn State is currently upgrading Holuba Hall and other upgrades will take place over the next few years. PSU, Michigan, OSU and Nebraska all have great set-ups for football.

No specifics...just that it was in conversation. As Latte mentioned, they've spent a lot of money to upgrade Holuba Hall and the weight facilities (not to mention the staff). With gameday revenues likely to drop the next few seasons, I think it will be a few years until it's seriously considered again.

With that said, the info comes from a long-time poster on BWI who has tailgated w Sneaky, Seltz, and I in the past. He is the head of Facilities Maintenance/Development for all of Main Campus. In his words (paraphrasing from memory), "That press box is the eye sore of the stadium. We know it, and there are plans to do something about it." Take that FWIW.

  • There were plans to brick the exterior of the stadium as well. They know that would make it look much better. However, that was taken out as well because it was not considered a major need. My understanding is the scoreboards will be next and then the press box. PSU will makes more changes to the non gameday team facilities, but most of the public will not see any of it. Holuba is currently being redone and that is why the Lift for Life is not there this year. They also added the sandpit.

    MillerLatte

  • Is the problem with the Press Box purely a looks issue or are there functional concerns as well?

    Lyon Around

  • The press box is bad. It has not really been touched in a long time. It almost feels like you are going back in a time machine when you go there - like it is 1985. For big games, it has been known to shake. I know more than a few press members that do not like the facility and always comment on it. PSU does not have to go over the top, but they do need to address it.

Five years ago I would have agreed with you, but Michigan has upgraded its facilities recently. In addition to renovating the Big House, they built a new indoor practice facility next to Schembechler Hall that is first rate and a new student-athlete academic support center. However, the PSU homer in me would say that they're now just up to par with the Lasch Building and Holuba Hall :-)

Nebraska's are nice. I would say that we should have been tied with Nebraska or in third. We definitely have nicer facilities than Michigan.

OSU may have great facilities. But you talk about a garbage campus and dump of a city. They may have cleaned it up some since when I was living there, but I still can't get over it when people call OSU beautiful.
