Expect a successful season

  • Watching BTN Football Preview- Leaders Division. Gerry DiNardo rated Penn State's talent level at ninth in the Big Ten. Given his horrible evaluation and prognostication skills, I look for a good season...9 wins+

    Domo

  • I would like to be Gerry's bookie for just one season...

    NevadaNittany

  • DiNardo is really starting to piss me off- 6 wins???????
Maybe my blue and white glasses are too thick, but only 6 wins. Our O has to be better. Defense should be comparable to last yr.

  • I agree with all of you guys, but he's not too far off from what vegas has predicted... the over/under for psu season win total is at 5.5

    zkc100

  • just going to make it that much sweeter when we win

And that bet has been taken off all the boards at the books in Vegas. Guess why?

  • Still see it on BETUS.com , you may not believe it put people make markets...enough people think badly enough about PSU to still bet that under, good thing for me, and you if you are a gambling man!

FWIW, I was just out there and saw no line available for PSU at all the sportsbooks I checked.

  • I guess if you gave a rating to every scholarship player and added those up, we probably would fall around 9th.. That's what happens when you have 15 less scholarship players than other teams.. I think our starters would put us somewhere in the middle of the pack, but we could be devastated by injury if this season is anything like 2010 when nearly the entire defense was injured at one time or another..

  • The the topper: Claim that Braxton Miller is a darkhorse Heisman candidate! Whoa Nelly.

This whole segment was from the people who made Terrelle Pryor their POY every preseason.

    DCPSU84819

  • So we are 9th in talent yet we win 6 games?

JD is so awful. And overall that show is such crap. They gloss over some of the horrible OOC schedules as "manageable", and claim a certain MSU DE needs to "mature". I think mature means to get stronger, wiser, and better at your craft. Instead, it means stop acting like a punk. I guess its the same thing!

I watched a Raider pre-season game last week, and can tell you TP hasn't progressed at all since he left college.. When his 1st option is covered up, his first instinct is still to try to pick up yards with his legs, and it's not as successful with the speed of NFL defenses. Of the throws I saw, they were wildly inaccurate. Jon Gruden of course had plenty of praise for him, but he talks up every player when he commentates..

Dinardo probably based his number on Vegas.

Yeah, that really annoys me about him.

  • Absolutely pathetic. I didn't watch this crap and I won't, but here's my quick Non BIG Biased breakdown of the talent level currently on rosters in our illustrious conference.

1)OSU- On paper they have the most talent. Wether or not it gets developed and coached up on Saturday Afternoons is TBD.

2)UM, MSU, UNL, WISC, PSU- All five teams have roughly equal amounts of talent currently on their rosters. It can be argured that PSU and UM have underachieved while MSU and Wisc have overachieved. Nebraska has performed about where they should based on their recruiting and development. My basis for comparison is actual on field results versus recruiting rankings(Scout & Rivals) over 2008-2012.

3)Iowa, Purdue, Illini, NW- All four recruit at about the same clip, and not surprisingly field similar results. A bit up and down, but with the ability to break into the above group when they have a senior laden team. Bowl Games are the expectation with the occasional tough year thrown in now and again. All four have made mini runs over the last 2 decades to challenge for the top of the conference.

4)Minnesota, Indiana- Both schools typically have the least overall talent collected on their rosters, but it is not uncommon for them to feature a highly skilled player on one side of the ball or both. They both can be a tough out, and certainly can pull the occasional upset. That said winning seasons and bowl games are usually hard to come by.

Now that said if you asked me how is the conference trending going forward I would answer that UM is likely to rise up to the top level with OSU. MSU, Wisky, and UNL will likely maintain enough recruiting and developmental success to stay a notch below them. PSU over the sanction period will struggle to stay at this same level and will likely backslide to the group including Iowa, Illinois, NW and Purdue.

  • I think we're close in talent level to all the Big Ten schools when comparing starters to starters. Going deeper than that is where we will suffer.

As for why Dinardo would list us as 9th in talent, but going 6-6 overall...that could easily be the record of the 9th best team. Also, he could think highly of our coaching, which could help make up for a lack of talent.

Which freaks me out a bit.

  • Didn't he say during the preview show how surprised he was with our talent?

    md154

  • How is Gerry even hired by ANY sports media outlet... his judgements are some of the most outrageous I have ever seen. I dont think he has too much knowledge of the game, HC or not.

Yes he did! And he was very surprised at the quality and depth of our secondary. He liked our practices, really surprised he backtracked from that, especially since we were one of the last places he visitied. And he loved our many TEs.
