Excitement Back!!!!!

  • When hiring was announced I wasn't sure that I would renew after 32 years as season ticket holder. After less than a week BO'B has made my decision easy for me. Assembled a great coching staff, that I'm sure will recuit very well, maybe even get recuits that were off our radar because of scandle. Getting excited about signing day and can't wait for BW game. GOOD LUCK COACH AND GO PSU.

So a new HC doesn't have to accomplish a single thing to get you excited. Wow. I wish you were my boss.

But in all seriousness, Jay Paterno is gone - what else can we ask for?

Well Sneaky, are you trying to get me back down in the dumps. Not going to let that happen, BO'B has taken HC job and invigorated the whole program and
myself included, hopefully you'll catch it too!!!!!!!!!!! GO STATE grumble

Thats my issue. How can a guy who so far hasn't done a single thing have invigorated people? I'm in a wait and see mode. Please, tell me what he has done besides give a run of the mill press conference? What exaclty can he hang his hat on that invigorated people? Is that how low Joe had you that a guy just being able to string together coherent sentences is all it takes to excite and invigorate you? Ill catch it IF he wins and produces. Im sure as hell not going to cream my pants before the guy does something.

Your ignorance makes me laugh, so we are even. I'm also not being negative. I'm asking how a man who hasn't done anything yet has people so excited? I would enjoy Joe leaving if I thought PSU hired the right man for the job. I, unlike you and clearly many others, am in a wait and see mode. I'll wait until he does something before I blow my load all over the guy. You and others, are willing to blow your load freely before the guy has accomplished a single thing. Tell me one thing the guy has done that you can hang your hat on? Which recruit landed? Game won? coaching performance for PSU???

No, I didn't. I guess thats why I'm not won over by your run of the mill press conference. Yes, Jay is gone and Joe is gone. Both great news. I just expected PSU to replace them with top notch coaches. Looks like they are insisting I lower my expectations now thast Joe isn't here to tell me to do so anymore.

Well, it's all relative. Look at what the last coach was "accomplishing." I'm pretty excited to have a coach that doesn't retain any of our offensive coaches and at least gives a $hit about recruiting. That's not reason enough for you to get excited, pete?

As far as im concerned, we still have a HC that isn't giving 100% time and effort to PSU. When BOB does that and makes some in homes then I will get a little excited. You know, when he does something.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you asked "Is that how low Joe had you?" Its actually pretty sad, but I too am just excited to have a HC who actually recruits and does things like, you know, his job. But I'm with you in wait and see mode. But I think there's little doubt that the coaching situation is better now than it was 3 months ago.

  • I think one of the biggest reasons that I am excited is because of the change…period. Speaking for myself, I knew what to expect when it came to the team. Usually a good defense a sub par coached offensive line, average to worse QB play an offense that was not exciting and not to forget our poor special team play. I would look more at how the other teams were going to be in a year to get a judge of what our record would be. We would get surprised like the 05 and the 08 year, but even with those teams we would still have to sweat out wins against Ohio State when they were on their off years. With all the bad play I could always hang my hat on the fact we had a living legend coaching our team and we did things the right way.

Now with a new coach I'm excited to see what lies ahead for recruiting, our strength program, offensive play calling and our special teams. We have been waiting for a long time for this team to move in to modern football. I know we all agree we did not want to see happen the way it did, but the pages of the past are turning and its time to look ahead with excitement.

Strange post with that sentence being the strangest -- you are assuming the team will be playing "modern football" (whatever that means) when O'Brien has no track record at all as a HC. To put that in perspective, he has less experience as a HC than Bradley, Vanderlinden, and Anderson, and even LJ won a lot of games as a HS HC. BOB has accomplished less than any of them.

If you want to say you're excited because you have no clue what to expect, or because you have fantasies that the team will be great, then that's fine. Anything more than that, though, is baloney. I'm excited in the sense of being apprehensive because we've got a rookie HC paired with a DC who did a lousy job at Auburn, so I see little reason to *expect* things to magically improve as so many others do -- the blind faith in BOB reminds me of the blind faith in Bolden before the season, and we saw how that turned out.

Are you 70 years old? Modern football is going on all around you. Cover 2 zones, no blitzing, FB dives are a thing of the past. You just broke out a wild cat....that was like 7 years ago. But it was exciting cause at PSU it never occurred.

Are you really comparing being a high school HC to being in the NFL....at any position? I dont care if O'Brien was the defensive line assistant to the defensive line coach, as long as it was the pros, that trumps HC in high school.

you don't know what I mean by modern football? It's ok I know you were just joking with me.

Let me say this I don't have blind faith in Coach O, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend that the last coaching staff put us in the best position to compete for national titles. Now with a change maybe we found that coach maybe we did not. Only time will tell and I think that is what has people excited they feel there is a chance again. They feel we may have a coach that will close the deal on top recruits instead of watching them go to our rival schools. I can only speak for myself but I am excited, its a new chapter of Penn State football.

O'Brien may fail, he may not, only time will tell. How is that not exciting. But this hole argument that he cant do it because he has never been a head coach is ridiculous. Urban, Saban, Miles, munchak, Golden, spurrier and oh yes Joe Paterno where not born with head coaching experience. If I remember correctly Joe never had hc experience when he took the job. I think that turned out ok.

  • Pete, you do bring up some great points but we do have a reason to be excited. Since you used a boss analogy I will as well. Have you ever hired someone or been hired and just couldn't wait to work with that person? I have been on both sides of that fence and I am excited about the coaches he has hired and doing his best to hang on to the recruits we have as well bring some new ones in that we had long written off. That makes me excited because yes he is doing his job but also reaching out to other kids we need desperately but had written off.

I am a Bronco fan and I would love for NE to win because I hope BOB gets a Super Bowl win and can flash that rock that will be around his finger in recruits living rooms.

Sneaky, I think the reason a lot of us are excited is that we have NO IDEA what to expect. We could suck next year. We could win the Big 10. For too many years, we've pretty much known how the season would turn out before the season started. Play pretty good defense unless we face a really good offense. Beat the really bad teams, lose to the really good teams as well as Iowa, OSU and Michigan. And no matter what, keep doing the same thing week in and week out, year in and year out. Now we have a coach that at least talks a good game. He's promising to give us what we've been asking for. What's not to get excited about? If he fails, we move on to the next coach. If he succeeds, we were there to watch him from the beginning.
