Eugene Lewis chats with Paterno

Wyoming Valley West wide receiver Eugene Lewis sat down with Joe Paterno on Skype on Wednesday, the latest recruit to get some face time with the Hall of Fame head coach.

  • Any timetable for a decision here, Sean? During/after the season?

  • I tell you what Sean, this really seems to be a homerun with the kids. Every single one thus far has commented on how well Joe has looked and how well he is coming off. At the very least, it's painting him in a very positive light with the recruits and that is the big picture for the most part. Kudos to the staff thus far this year as they are attacking it from every angle possible so far and it appears to be paying off. You just scratch your head as to what the hell happened last winter and spring. It ended up strong, but they were stuck in the mud for a while. Now it's the complete opposite and I hope it stays like this moving forward...with or without Joe.

Taking it slow right now, no timetable for a decision.

Every possible angle would include actually leaving state college and visiting a recruit in person.

You want to bitch and moan constantly... we get it.

If all you want to do, and it sure seems that way, is complain then go to BWI .

He can't right now...so this is every possible angle. We know he won't and you said this yesterday. The need for the daily hijack is gone...seriously. This balance on this site is pretty good...no need for the look at me I'm super critical all the time act. It's old elsewhere and it's been done before.

  • No kidding man. I haven't posted on BWI in over a month now because I was tired of all the bickering. I know/hope Sean and company don't let it take over this board. I am all for opinions but the broken record posters get old real quick, real quick, real quick.....

  • I love that Joe is skyping and using technology to his advantage. While this isn't visiting a recruit, it's Joe making the effort and is more like an in home then a phone call or letter (his usual MO lately) and shows that he needs to do things like this and go do in home's to bring in good players and classes. Maybe now all those who defended Joe saying in home visits are/were pointless and mean nothing will see that while they aren't the end all be all they do make a difference, especially if you are a living legend and also trying to sell that at your old age you are still able to get all the jobs done as a HC. I have to wonder what could have been.

  • Very few didn't think they would make a difference and it's been a sticking point for a long time. I think the vast majority knew this, but also understood that it wasn't going to happen after year 2-3 of it not occurring. It may have just taken some a little while longer I guess and yes a few holdouts still feel it doesn't mean a thing. It may not for every recruit, but it would have been nice to maybe land another big fish or two each year.

  • I have to wonder---hopefully---about the impact of this very, very old coach showing up virtually on a recruit's computer via this new technology. Put yourself in the place of a 17-year old kid who gets a Skype from Joe Paterno! How cool is that? Yes, Joe probably should have retired 4-5 years ago, but if we're really Penn State "fans" (people who claim to ENJOY Penn State football), we've got to be able to get a chuckle over this. I'd much rather have my coach talking to recruits by Skype than have him deflecting charges of NCAA rules violations from the media!

You're probably right - he is probably the only one who would've been able to sit Joe down and get the point across to him about how Skype could really work. Kudos to Jay for sure, if it was indeed him.

There definitely is a "cool factor" when an old person uses things like computers, cell phones, ect. Especially when the old person is only a couple of years removed from this comment:

"You guys have to talk about something. The fans have got to put something on those, what do you guys call those things, Twittle-do? Twittle-dee? I haven't got the slightest idea what you're looking at."

I really do think that Paterno wants people to think that he is an out-of-touch old man so that he can shock them later on. It's his nature... with the whole sandbagging that he does before games, the old "black shoes = slow on film" theory... he wants people to think that he (or the team) are not as good as they are.

Exactly. If it was Jay, he should be thoroughly commended for it. It's a double punch in a way -- a super old-fashioned coach using the latest technology. It appeals to both sides of the fence.

He's dead nuts on and has a right to his opinion of tempering everyone's joy that Joe skyped. I mean, I'm happy Joe skyped but look how excited so many are getting for Joe DOING HIS JOB and what EVERY other HC in America is and has been doing. He is also trying to temper the joy because he knows/believes that Joe won't do everything he can cause he won't visit and we clearly see the impact that would have.

I'm amazed at how much overcredit Joe is getting for doing his job, what he is supposed to be doing. This reminds me of the Chris Rock stand up where he talks about people wanting credit for doing the things they are supposed to be doing.

Again, I am glad that Joe is finally using technology to his advantage and skyping but lets not throw a parade because he is doing his job. It's also easy, at least for me, to understand why some voice complaints everyday. Some of us think things could be very different and much better.

This is a good substitute for him not going out on the road and actually sitting in these kids' living rooms (when coaches can do that), although IMO, I don't think anything tops that. Skype is a great alternative, for sure and I'm glad Joe seems to enjoy using it.

By the way, welcome to the board! Hope you enjoy yourself over here.

Funny, I was thinking about Rock's "what do you want, a cookie?" rant last night when I was able to get my kid fed, changed, bathed, and to bed without my wife's help last night. And yeah, I wanted a cookie.

Here's where you're wrong. Things can't be better, because "better" to you in this situation means (1) Joe Paterno leaving Happy Valley to recruit, which isn't happening, or (2) we get another head coach, WHICH ISN'T HAPPENING. That's the issue. Paterno using Skype is the best conceivable thing he can for the program with respect to recruiting, given the above.

This at least shows some effort from the head coach, which was sorely missing the last few years.

As right as FJP might be, he's brought it up every time an article appears about Joe Skyping. Yes, we get it. Thanks for saying it over and over and over again.

We understand many of the points that you and FJP make. We just choose to understand reality as it currently is. There's a lot of people who would like to see Joe retire. We just choose not to complain about it every single time we post, and we'd prefer not to see the same point (with no new opinion/information) appear in every thread. That doesn't make any of us blind to these problems.

We must be seeing different posts. I don't see any "overcredit" being given. I see people happy that Joe is doing more than any of us expected he'd do this year. Reality is that we have an old coach that hasn't done much (if anything) in terms of recruiting in a while. If you came into this offseason expecting Joe to visit kids by the dozen, well that's just stupid. So in general, Joe is exceeding expectations. The PSU football program is another story.

I just don't see the point of making the same complaint in every "Joe skyped with XXX" thread. FJP really needs to introduce something new to his shtick, or make one thread about it and stick it there.

    +1. Well said scrappled.

It's him doing something he didn't do in the past, and therefore it's a positive thing. I don't see how a negative twist is being put on this.

Well as long as #1 and #2 continue to happen I am going to voice my displeasure and continue to state that Joe should be forced out if he can't or refuses to do everything he should be doing. Yes, things can be better. Joe can do what is right/best for the program and step down or fulfill all duties or our Admin can do what's right/best for the program and force him out.

I'm not satisfied "some effort" and I expect Joe to give 100% effort, you know, like he demands from his players!!!!

100% effort for an 83 year old man with health issues in a demanding job seems to be overpredicted sometimes.

We understand that #1 and #2 are issues. What's the point of constantly reiterating it to a whole bunch of people who 1) know they are issues, 2) generally agree with you, 3) can't do a dang thing about it, 4) are tired of hearing about it for years?

These threads and topics aren't meant to divert to discussions on the overall picture of the PSU program. Sometimes, topics are simply meant to have replies of "Hey, Joe Pa actually talked to a kid over Skype. That's nice, hope it helps our case," and then move on.
