Early commits

  • For those who have followed recruiting longer than I have (~2 years): how often do early commits end up decommitting and going elsewhere?

And by early commits, I mean guys who commit to a school about a year before NSD.

Approximately what percentage of currently committed 2013 prospects do you think will flip to another school by February 2013?

Very often. Many times, a kid will only go and visit one or two places and just commit right on the spot. Then as time goes on and he receives interest from other schools, and other prospects start talking to each other, his "eyes open up".

Percentages are hard, but I'm willing to bet it is around 20-30%.

  • It's not an exact science, because the one unpredictable variable is coaching changes. You'd need to compare switches made due to coaching changes and those made due to personal preference.

    I was thinking around 25%.

Of course I forgot to mention that coaching changes sometimes (or maybe often) have a lot to do with prospects flipping.

You beat me to the punch, I was just adding that in my response to jive.

Absolutely, coaching changes probably make the biggest difference. Will be interesting to see what changes are made next year - there's some decently big HC names in recruiting who could be shown the door next year.

It seems to be happening more and more. I think that these kids are getting pressure to commit early to schools (with coaches saying slots are filling fast), so they commit to keep a spot with the class, but keep looking around. It seems some of the bigger name recruits are beginning to use a commit as a placeholder waiting for better options to open up.

With PSU being ransacked by OSU, I am happy to see that we are beginning to aggressively go after commits to other programs. I think you'll be seeing more and more of this.

Yeah, I keep seeing a lot of 2013 kids who have either decided or have narrowed down their choices.

It seemingly gives new coaching staffs like our own barely any chance to talk to them and develop any sort of relationship with them before they commit somewhere or have a "top 5" list or something.

Not complaining or anything, as I was a big fan of Mike Hull and Silas Redd committing to us early. And I think we finally have a staff who isn't just going to bugger off whenever commits don't seem to be interested at first - these guys seem willing to work on players even if they don't have much time to spare.

  • And let me just add, we did much better than most teams at keeping early commits because 1) we didn't get that many and 2) most early commits just loved PSU forever... they knew what to expect, and nothing was changing. I'm sure that both of those things will be different moving forward. But that's not a bad thing... even if we lose a couple of early commits each year, we will be WAY ahead of where we normally are by the end of spring practice, IMO. Usually, at that time, we are just getting started while other teams have been sending out verbal offers for a year or two on that class.

  • alot more than they used too

its a double edge sword for staffs, it helps them recruit other kids, makes them look better, but they also have to spend a ton of time babysitting those commits
