Dominos begin to fall

  • From musings of various people on the Blue Board, it sounds like the top two QB's on Alabama's wish list were Hackenberg and McCrary. McCrary, in something of a shocker, just committed to Vanderbilt. Bama was already recruiting Hack fairly hard, will they put the full court press on?

The RB position is another one to keep an eye on. There seems to be a number of prospects with mutual interest between OSU, Michigan, and PSU. Guys like Deveon Smith (apparently nobody thinks PSU has a chance with him - saw people saying it's 50/50 UM and OSU), Derrick Green, etc. We're taking 2 RB's, so is UM, but OSU has an absolute max of 2, probably more like 1 this year. Will be interesting to see what happens there.

  • So your saying we don't have a chance with Hack

    PSUgo15

  • I would think OSU's depth chart at RB isn't very appealing for 1 let alone 2 top RB's. UM is also sitting really really highly with Ty Isaac the 5 star RB from Illinois and OSU is sitting very highly with Derrick Green. We could by de facto become the number one for De'Veon Smith if those other 2 backs beat him to the punch and verbal to OSU/UM.

McRary's recruitment is far from over, but we'll see.

  • No BOB and his staff just need to work extra hard cause it seems like we're going to be going head-to-head with Bama for Hackenburg. I still like our chances but it just got ALOT tougher.

How dare they, he's our recruit!!

Nice offer, he'll have a pretty impressive offer list whenever he commits.

Possible, but a number of UM fans are projecting both Isaac and Smith in their class. Some also think the staff is recruiting Wyatt Shallman as a RB, so it's possible neither program will have room for Smith. It's also possible he likes us more than either of those fanbases think.

go15 - where did I say we had no chance with Hack? I was just saying that Bama might really focus on Hack. They might also start offering a couple other QB's in the class, I don't know.

  • Bama's qb has 3 years of eligibility left right? So Hackenberg will have to wait 2 years before becoming a starter at Bama.. He could be a starter as a true frosh at PSU, hopefully the staff can sell that to him..

It's true, but it's hard to count on a guy flipping. Take Bama and Jameis Winston for example.

Why would Isaac and Smith go to the same school? They are the same type of runner. Where I think you're mistaking is by listening to UM fans, (just like opposing schools listening to alot of PSU fans that say ridiculous things about recruiting each year)

That's the other RB I was trying to think of - blanked for a minute.

Basically, there's enough interest in PSU from various prospects (I'm assuming Green still has interest in PSU, despite a lack of recent indicators) that we should be able to get two very good RB's. JMO.

  • a dream RB haul would be Smith and Williams...Brute strength and elite speed combo right there. A more realistic, but nearly equally impressive haul would be Williams/Smith and DeShawn Coleman.

Maybe so. I don't think being similar types of runners will necessarily prevent a guy from committing to a school. I think it's just one of those things we're going to have to wait and see on.

being the same type runner and both being 4/5 stars definitely weighs on a guys mind....how much is unknown. This is an annoying time of the year to follow recruiting because pretty much every fanbase thinks they will land every prospect they've offered.

They aren't similar runners really. Isaac is a smoth guy who pulls away. Smith is a freaking mac truck. Michigan is going to get two top guys out of IL this year in Isaac and LTT I think. Surprising becasue neither are Chicago Public School kids, though Idk where Isaac is actually from before JCA (they give scholarships).

I think Alabama has a good shot at landing Max Browne from Washington. Alabama's new OC Nussmeir apparently has quite a good relationship with Browne. I would guess they put a full court press on Browne before going all in with Hackenberg. It least that's how I hope the dominos start falling.

  • Hey, if you want the best players, you are going to have to compete against the best teams in the nation. Regional recruiting gives you an edge, but if the kid is a national recruit, you are going to be butting heads with the big boys.

    getmyjive11

  • Way too early to talk about dominos. The only dominos that have occurred, Dominic Moore to the Sharks and Philly adding Grossman.

I suggest people take a look at what Michigan and OSU signed in this last recruiting class. Both signed two RBs, OSU's two RBs are studs. OSU signed 1,000 linebackers and might have maxed out in DBs and OL/DL (took five on each line). They are or could be somewhat limited in several positions as far as taking kids this year. This might sound bad on the surface and its not my intention, but PSU could be a very good default school here. It has tons of openings everywhere and PSU could very well capitalize on OSU's and Michigan's numbers crunch at certain positions.

Hackenburg - fine, Alabama is pressing - maybe. People are making this out to be a Bama vs. PSU head to head. I think UVA will have something to say about that. JMO, we will go head to head with UVA more than any other school this year.

both big backs is what I was referring...2 backs like that would probably be more hesitant to go to the same school than say David Williams and Deveon Smith as they are pretty much opposites and their roles wouldn't be the same.

  • For a QB, all other things being equal, Alabama vs old PSU staff = edge to alabama. However, for a QB, all other things being equal, Alabama vs new PSU staff = edge to PSU overall.

Along with that I don't want to turn into Texas Tech or Hawaii in any way but coaches on the staff have been quoted saying if we need to throw 40 times to beat an opponent that's what will do. Seems like more opportunity to open in the passing game here now rather than a run orientated offense in Bama'. (wow had to catch myself there)
