Does this really prevent future coverups?

  • Consider a new AD or president taking over the position and somehow discovering that the previous regime had covered something up. Isn't this a monumental disincentive for him to do the right thing and blow the whistle?

  • Sure prevents any future school from hiring the ex-FBI director from uncovering every stone and mole they can to destroy the University for teh NCAA, huh?

sounds like we are talking about most politicians.......

That's what I was going to say. Paying someone to throw you under the bus = bad.

  • I wouldn't say it's a disincentive. Schools self-report violations all the time. The reason Penn State got hammered is because everyone covered it up, including the man at the top of the pyramid.

I'm sure that there would still be punishment (depending on the severity of the transgressions) but not nearly as harsh as they would be if nobody reported it.

    No.

I'm willing to bet cover up are occurring as I type. That's the world we live in.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

About as well as USC's penalties did.

  • Could you imagine being in the situation of a mike mcqueary right now? You suspect that there was something swept under the rug but blowing the whistle means certain doom for your beloved school and program. I really can't figure out what these football program sanctions accomplish other than emmert getting TV time. Taking away the wins to spite a wrongdoer and implementing a fine that goes towards preventing future similar nightmares makes sense to me. Can't figure out what they think are achieving by issuing the remaining sanctions.

to prove to the country "they mean business". the public was crying for this to happen for a long time, he just made a lot of insignificant fans.. what i truely hope is that this decision showed other university leaders that the ncaa unjustly punishes its participants and they speak out about it or take action. but from hearing the usc fans on the board the last couple days, it seems that wont happen, easier to turn your back and hope it doesnt happen to you..

  • Pedophile cover ups are obviously outside the norm, but covering up for players' crimes has been commonplace in college football. Yes, I think that comes to a swift end after NCAA's sanctions against PSU.
