Did the B1G just slam the door on you?

  • I see that you both recruit many of the same areas and this can now be a bigger advantage for Maryland and possibly Rutgers. With your sanctions do you think that this will screw you all even more? No flame but from an outsiders view, looks like you all are getting shafted with this move by Delaney. Thoughts?

    No, PSU will benefit the most from this in that we now have a couple of eastern teams to play. PSU recruiting will be tough for the next couple of years, but after that, PSU will be fine.

  • I honestly don't think so. I think we may see a slight change of the guard on the recruiting trail but nothing too overwhelming. PSU dominates Maryland and sometimes NJ depending on the year.

  • No it won't really affect PSU in recruiting... PSU has already flipped two Maryland recruits this year even though the sanctions are just beginning.

  • We will now also have the benefit of playing IN Maryland and New Jersey every other year. If anything, I think this helps us.

  • If MD and RU beat us all the time, it will hurt. But they won't. And then we'll beat them in front of their own states and recruits. This could make MD and NJ home states for us.

    A couple points to consider.

    1. PSU fans have very strong alumni/fan base in NJ and Maryland. Having half of Rutgers and Maryland stadiums filled up with PSU fans is a good thing for us and a reminder to recruits the pecking order. As a PSU fan, having makable road games is really nice to have. OSU is the closest but that is one of the toughest places to get tickets.

    2. Maryland and probably Rutgers are beatable teams for PSU through the sanctions. PSU getting 7ish wins a year through the sanctions and being bowl eligible ASAP is huge.

    3. Rutgers were selling kids on the fact that they had a relatively easy road to a BCS game. Louisville, Cincinatti and South Florida only thing between them and a BSC game. Harder to sell kids on having to go through OSU, Wisc, PSU and whoever else they play + BIG Ten Championship game. In the end, they don't have a tradition, don't have an easy road to a bowl/BSC/Conference Championship, and play for an apathetic fan base.

    4. Overall I think that it will help Rutgers and Maryland overall recruiting. IMO, this hurts Pitt, Virginia and BC recruiting the most as they "offer" many of the same things as Maryland and Rutgers, just now in a less stable conference. Not that the BIG Ten is some super awesome conference, but I think Rutgers in particular can recruit better and be better, but end up being worse record wise.

    I didn't downvote (or upvote) you. Just to be clear. I did not take offense to your question as I think it is valid.

    Moreso than us, I think those two teams are going to find it a little harder to recruit than they think. Yes, they will now be able to sell football in the Big Ten instead of the ACC or (especially) the Big East, but I think this will open up the recruiting trail for Big Ten teams (Nebraska should be excited). Also, those two teams (especially Rutgers) sold the idea of playing close to home.. that kind of goes away a bit. Maryland in particular will find it harder to keep DC kids home to play basketball. East coast basketball kids do not find playing in the midwest appealing. They never have, and I don't see that changing now.

  • As a Nebraska fan I am excited to get back into New Jersey. During our late 90s run we dominated with new jersey recruits. I like the move. I was seeing this as a disadvantage to you guys the most though because you controlled the B1G advantage in that area, now you are opening to more teams in your hotbed out there. Obrien is a damn good coach though so sales shouldn't be a problem.

  • To add to what others have said, The addition of BTN to those markets will increase the number of pro-PSU programming they will receive. They will see features on our coaches, our athletes and our facilities.
    (Obviously this will happen with all other BTN schools, but PSU needs it more right now)

    Plus, like someone said, PSU fans will represent well at those stadiums (making them almost PSU "home" games).

    Third, the new TV contract will help PSU pay off some of the NCAA fine and some might be left over to improve our facilities (I am looking at the press boxes and scoreboard).

    If the B1G did this to screw us, they did a pretty bad job of it.

  • We have a combined 3 losses against UMD and Rutgers in something like 80 total games.

    No, I am not worried one bit, even with sanctions.

    With regards to the downvotes, I think people are very touchy around here lately as we've had lots of Bucknuts come over and "act nice" to turn out to be trolls and run back to their boards like a little girl.

  • Also, lets not forget....Maryland and Rutgers really are not that good. You know how Nebraska was half-filled at NW's stadium this year? PSU will do the same to MD and RU.

    Truthfully, I expect MD and RU to be somewhere around a NW team. Maybe solid some years, but will always be in the shadows of other teams (Nebraska, PSU, etc..). Yes, we are going through sanctions so it'll be tough for a little while with these 2, but in the end, I think we will outmatch and outman MD and RU just like we did for the last century, except for 3 games and 1 tie.

  • psu fans will likely take over the away games at UMD and Rutgers. I know I will probably go to at least one of thos away games living equidistant from PSU, UMD and Rutgers.

  • This is only good for us in the long run. We compete with these schools for a lot of recruits and when we are kicking their ass year in and year out, recruits wil want to play for a winner.

    PSU is starting to recruit in $EC country so we are moving our brand to new locations as well.

    In the 80's you had Rozier and Fryar from NJ as well.

  • Delaney may be a tool, but he is motivated to make the Big Network bigger and more lucrative, that means getting into two of the biggest TV markets on East Coast, RU and UMD do that. I think it actually helps PSU recruiting, as there will be more games in area for recruits to see and their families to see.
