Did Jones and Bolden scare DOB away??

I didn't see anyone call him dumb or question his intelligence. I saw them mention he wasn't elgible, failed classes etc. You don't have to be dumb to fail classes. One can simply not show up, not study or do their assignments, party too much and so on and so forth.

Sneaky, that's BS. YOU might not have questioned his intelligence. Others have, maybe not in this thread but in countless threads for the last year. Asking "how can he pick up the playbook if he can't stay academically eligible?" is not a question about his study habits or his work ethic. If a f'in playbook is the hardest thing a kid reads in college, we're all in a lot of trouble. Again, no-one knows the details of his ineligibility. You didn't even address it in your response. He's still a freaking sophomore. He was ineligible for his true sophomore season due to his freshman year. Wow, imagine a kid from a poor high school having trouble his first year in college! Since the summer doesn't count and the fall was too late to matter, he essentially became eligible by the next cutoff date, the end of last semester and is now on pace to stay eligible. If he screws up and loses his eligibility after this semester, all bets are off. But to question his "reliability" without any detailed information is, IMO, stupid.

If you can't understand the context being used for "not trusted" then I can't help you. There seems to be only 2 people in this thread who can't follow what is being suggested.

PJ is behind in credits because he was doing poor in classes and then dropped them. So far he has shown that he can't be trusted to be counted on to be eligible for the season. That's a fact, not an arrogant statement. Nobody, not Hamilton or myself, said it would be bad if PJ was named the starter by BOB. What's being said is that as of right now you can't count on him or consider him because he hasn't been able to stay eligible. Facts, not faith, point to this. NOBODY is treating him like a criminal or even close to it. People are pointing out and rightfully so, that he can't be trusted right now based ON HIS OWN ACTIONS. If you were a loan officer and your customer defaulted on his past two loans would you blindly say you believe he can be trusted now? No statement of arrogance was made, not one.

But he IS ELIGIBLE - so you are predicting that he won't remain so based on past performance, yet admit that he has improved enough to have been declared eligible. We can just agree to disagree on this, I was a guy who d*cked around my first two years, got placed on academic suspension, turned it around and finished with a 3.3. I didn't have the starting qb job @ PSU on the line, either. If I'm an optimist regarding PJ, it's because he has apparently begun to turn it around as well. Guess we'll see who's right in a few months...

Not long ago BOB said "Paul Jones is eligible FOR NOW." So yes, you are right. He is eligible now. However,t he tone of that comment should be taken seriously. It didn't sound like it was certain he would be eligible come August/September. I hope he remains eligible for his sake and the team's. We have to see how this plays out, which means waiting a few months. You have no idea, nor do I if he will remain eligible or not at this point. It's up to him and how bad he wants it.

Don't you think saying "for now" was a motivational technique to keep Jones working hard? Telling him "hey paul, I'm happy where you are right now....but you still got work to do bud"

Great, you value coach speak over facts. I get it, thats your right.

Right, a reference, (someone you know and is trying to help you) is more important then cold hard facts. If you ignored defaults and gave loans based on references you would be out of a job and fast.

Oh, well, BOB said he wasn't worried about PJ. That's it, case closed. Cause know coach has never tried to support his players. Nope. Did/would you expect him to say he was/is worried about PJ academically to the media even if he was/is? Really?

Right now PJ is eligible. We will see if he remains eligible. For you not to understand why so many are reserved based on his previous 2 years then I don't know what to tell you. If you you want to continue to have blind faith and believe everything that comes out of BOB's mouth is gold then so be it.

Last year Joe said as much. I'm paraphrasing, but Joe said something to the effect of "He's going to be a real good football player if he can get his act together with his grades". So yeah, I do expect a coach to tell us either A. Nothing or B. Avoid the question. or C. Tell us the truth. Bob has not shown to be a liar to this point, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt until he's shown otherwise.

Cold hard facts. I know of one cold hard fact about P.J.. Paul Jones was academically ineligible last year, and it was due to a lack of credits, not a grades problem. The rest is speculation.

Do I know anymore details than that? No. Do you? Possibly. If you do please share these detailed facts and I will concede.

Hamilton says that the 2 year layoff will hurt Jones. I dont buy that. A lot of players redshirt and there arent that many redshirt Freshman starters at QB in the NCAA. Another fact is that Jones was basically as highly rated as Hack is coming out of highschool and unless we struck out with 2 highly sought after quarterbacks, Jones just might pan out. All we really have to go by is that BlueWhite game two years ago, and he kicked a lot of ass in it. More than Bolden or McGloin have ever since.

Hamilton, every one knows he might not be eligibility come fall. That is true for every player on the team.

Everyone knows he wasn't eligible one year ago because he did not have enough qualifying credits. We also know that he became eligible following the fall semester. So, through 1 or 2 summer sessions and the fall, he completed not only enough credits for those academic periods themselves, but enough to catch up for the credits he was deficient. If anything, that paints a picture of someone who has "turned a corner academically" as BOB also said rather than someone ready to fall behind again.

P.s. I'm not sure I'm ready to trust your ability to decipher other people's hidden meanings. From 5 days ago...

  • P.s. no-one knows if he missed qualifying last year by 1 credit or 10. Both would have cost him his eligibility last season. Each would reflect a completely different picture of what kind of student he is.

  • Again, this is pretty pointless. We have what we have. We also have the best QB coach in the biz and an offensive genius... He will get the most out of our QBs and the best guy will win the job.

Catching up on all the posts from today, but nicely said rmj, two nights in a row. These are the simple facts

    a) the QB race is wide open
    b) the caliber of our offensive coaching just increased exponentially
    ......and most importantly.........
    c) we won't know who will be the starting QB until August at the earliest and all these posts are pointless until that time

I think this rolls up 7 pages of posts into one cliff notes summary (without all the bashing)

  • Danny O'Brien is a hot and cold quarterback. Trust me I know. He had Torrey smith a stud wide out. And a stud running back in da rel Scott. O'Brien is the type of player who is very high maintance yes he has a great arm. But he doesn't do well with adversity. He is kinda soft. Once cj Brown started playing well for Maryland he wanted out.

Wisconsin fans better pray DOB doesn't have a bad half, or sacked. Oh yeah his number 1 issue is that he holds the ball too long at times if the o-line doesn't get time.

And he will make some dumb decisions too. Like throwing a last minute int to west va, that lost us the game last year.

So essentially DO'B would've given us the great arm but nonexistent pocket awareness and high maintenance, threaten-to-transfer-at-the-first-sign-of-adversity mentality of Bolden combined with the inexplicable 'randomly throw right into multiple coverage at an inopportune time' tendency of McGloin? All packaged together into one charmin-soft qb?

Missing out on Danny "Don't Call Me Matthew McBolden!" O'Brien is a huge blow for PSU. We could've garnered last years production all without having to endure the constant ingame qb shuffling.
