Did Jones and Bolden scare DOB away??

  • sneakypete said...

You're the one kidding yourself. The job was DOBs if he came, same as at Wisky. Wisky also has a young QB they are high on and would probably play better then Bolden at this point. It will take time for Bolden and PJ to unlearn then learn correctly. DOB would've had a VERY long leash, don't kid yourself.

NOBODY on here said DOB wouldn't be the QB. We are talking about the situation from DOB's perspective. Mostly everyone on here would agree he would probably start. But as a kid coming into a program and seeing the "competition" for the first time....it would be VERY easy for him to see Bolden and Jones' skill set and say "geez, these guys are pretty good. They got good size, good athletes, good arms......why should I worry about competing with that if I don't have to?" You can only trust a coach so much...and if he tells you "you're my guy", that's great and all. But if you see, with your own eyes, a few other guys who also have some skill, you have to question the WHAT IF that guy does step it up? That coach who promised me the job may make a switch if he feels the other guy has developed.

    Simple.

  • I am not going to read this entire thread, but Bolden is an absolute disaster case. His confidence is so bad, I don't know how he can recover in short order. Worse, is that I don't think time matters in his case. You really can't teach feel of pass rushers. What we once thought was poise was a case of obliviousness.

Can PJ play? When he was battling Bolden in the beginning it was said he had trouble picking up JayPa's playbook. Now he has to pick up a presumably more complicated one. He also hasn't been eligible since, well pretty much forever.

I do think something may have changed when DOB watched practice earlier in the week. Did our guys look good in their uniforms? That is just wild speculation, but possible, I suppose. What we do know is our guys can't play.

We have McGloin for one year and then what? Bench as a RS frosh. Hackenburg as a true frosh? It might be four years before we see competent QB play. DOB is a huge loss and a real setback for BOB any way you slice it.

You can make that same WHAT IF comment at every program in the country. I think you are seeing things in RB that just aren't there. We will have to agree to disagree cause I don't see anything that would scare DOB away. Both got beat out by a walk on with little to know talent who had the same QB coach as them. Nothing for DOB to be scared of, worry about, or bat an eye at.

  • WOW. Look I love our Nits but RB at quarter back will force me to stop going to games. He appeared to be mentally weak behind center...as bad as McGloin was Bolden was 10 times worse. I do not care how good he looks in practice he really should be last option at quarter back. I will repeat, I never in all my yrs of watching football witnessed a kid look as bad as RB. I hope PJ keeps his head on straight and has solid camp. I would really like to see this kid have a shot w/ McGloin backing him up.

Whether its getting old or not, the fact remains, he can't be trusted. As I have mentioned before, BOB said PJ is eligible for now, which left the door open saying he isn't out of the woods. He could very well not be eligible come August. People are pinning their hopes that this kid gets his act together in the classroom and all the sudden becomes the player they thought he would be coming out of high school, a decorated four star (whatever that means) that can start.

It's not an obsession, its the truth. Fact is, this kid hasn't played a single game of college football for two years. He hasn't played a single game of football since his last game in high school (I don't count the controlled scrimmage called the B&W Game).

While you make some valid points, you can't dismiss his negatives or challenges either. Neither you nor I know what to make of PJ on the field. We have a good idea what to make of him in the classroom. I hope he turns it around and makes impact this year too because I don't have confidence in the other two. He is the most intriguing of the three. However, I have seen posters saying he "is the man". How do they know? They haven't seen him for two years and that was a controlled scrimmage.

By the way, its not likely a Matt Cassell story happens again.

God, how arrogant some people can be - "he can't be trusted"?? WTF are you to make that statement? I could care less whether you think PJ is trustworthy or not, I'll let OB make that decision. If he starts PJ it's because PJ deserves to start. Oh, and Brad Johnson says hello as well...

Ya, how arrogant for him to say such things when the two years PJ has been at PSU he has been ineligible. The arrogance of junction look at PJs track record and not trust him. Blind faith is what he should have. He probably judges politicians on performance and results too. What an idiot.

Honestly, I am plenty sick of these kids who are constantly in the doghouse and end up being a waste of a scholarship. I'm willing to give some of these kids a chance, but there is a limit to patience. It's too bad several of these kids (Jones, Derrick Thomas), are at severe positions of need.

Sorry, but your schtick is no more compelling here than it was on previous boards. PJ is a college kid. He didn't do well his first year in school, and as a result redshirted his freshman year, then got behind in credits, which cost him last year. You people are acting like the kid got in trouble with the law, or was fighting with teammates, or some other heinous act. He's eligible. He evidently impressed in practice yesterday based on comments elsewhere. If he wins the job and OB starts him this Fall, I could give a flying flip whether you or Hamilton or anyone else believes he "can't be trusted". If you can;t recognize that comment as arrogant and condescending, I don't know what to tell you. (Note - forgot who I was talking to, sorry).

As for Brad Johnson, Hamilton tried to make the point that the Matt Cassell thing was a fluke. Brad sat behind Casey Weldon his whole career and ended up in the NFL. A) it happens, b) PAUL HAS THREE YEARS OF ELIGIBILITY LEFT. Anyone here think three years isn't enough for a 5-star recruit to become a satisfactory qb under OB and Fisher??

Give me one good reason why people should trust PJ. One. Fact, he has been ineligible for two years. There is NO reason to all the sudden trust him that he will be eligible this year based on his academic shortcomings. Yes, he is a college kid. No, we aren't acting like he stole something, or got in trouble with the law. He didn't do well the first year and got behind in credits the second. Could it be he dropped classes he was failing to bring up the GPA, thus got behind on the credits? I have no idea, but might explain it.

There is nothing arrogant about my statement. How can it be arrogant if its the truth? It he wins the job outright and gets his academics in order, I will be the first to congratulate him on overcoming adversity. Until then - meaning until he gets the academics together, he isn't an option to start at PSU because he won't be eligible.

Cassell was a fluke. Brad Johnson got actual plays in games and got seen. You won't have a Cassell situation again. If you were running an NFL team and there was a QB at XXX school who never saw a snap under center during his four or five year collegiate career, are you going to take a shot at him? Not likely.

Yes, PJ has three years left, if he keeps his academics up. Another drop and he is gone. He doesn't have much of a leash. Drop the star count. He is two years removed from that star count. That was high school. This is college. Big difference.

PJ is behind in credits because he was doing poor in classes and then dropped them. So far he has shown that he can't be trusted to be counted on to be eligible for the season. That's a fact, not an arrogant statement. Nobody, not Hamilton or myself, said it would be bad if PJ was named the starter by BOB. What's being said is that as of right now you can't count on him or consider him because he hasn't been able to stay eligible. Facts, not faith, point to this. NOBODY is treating him like a criminal or even close to it. People are pointing out and rightfully so, that he can't be trusted right now based ON HIS OWN ACTIONS. If you were a loan officer and your customer defaulted on his past two loans would you blindly say you believe he can be trusted now? No statement of arrogance was made, not one.

If I was a prognosticator.. I I'm pretty sure I value BoB's opinion here more than yours.

If I was looking for a reference as loan officers often do... I'd probably also stick with BoB here.

Its not like we have any comment from BoB though right?

    Oh wait... we do.

    Q. What is Paul Jones' academic standing right now, and how concerned are you moving forward that he'll be able to keep his grades up?

COACH O'BRIEN: I've really been happy with Paul Jones this semester. He's doing well in school. He's really working hard right now. Obviously the final grades aren't out right now, but just the updates that I've been getting from our academic staff, it seems to me that Paul has turned a corner academically, and so hopefully he finishes strong and he'll be ready to go for next year. Obviously, we'll rep him in spring in anticipation of him being able to play.
So that's where I see Paul Jones right now.

What Nole fails to realize and while Brad Johnson was primarily a back up, he threw more than 200 passes in his collegiate career. He completed nearly 65% of those passes. That is a pretty decent sample to figure out what you are getting - a highly efficient QB worth taking a chance on. How he brings up Johnson and tries to put him in the same category as a former third stringer at USCw that not only didn't throw a pass in his career - didn't take one snap from center is beyond me.

+1. Does anyone know the details of his academic problems? For all we know he had one REALLY bad semester his freshman year and fell so far behind it took him ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE FALL SEMESTER OF HIS SOPHOMORE SEASON to catch up. Or maybe it's just easier to assume he's a retard.

He may or may not be a good QB. We will get to find out at some point. But the questioning of his intelligence without knowing anything about him is ridiculous.

"Can't be trusted" is a poor and condescending word choice.
It suggests that he is dishonest, not trustworthy, as opposed to a kid who, perhaps (i dont' know the details) went to an academically challenged high school and has had a bit of difficulty getting adjusted to college academics.
    Words are important.

I think I have made it very very very clear regarding the "can't be trusted" comments are related to academics and nothing else. No, its not a condescending or poor word choice if you read the context of my posts. It's very clear what I have meant all along. I even spelled it out for the people who can't understand it in one post earlier.

Two years isn't a bit of difficulty to me. JMO of course.

Great, you value coach speak over facts. I get it, thats your right.

Right, a reference, (someone you know and is trying to help you) is more important then cold hard facts. If you ignored defaults and gave loans based on references you would be out of a job and fast.

Oh, well, BOB said he wasn't worried about PJ. That's it, case closed. Cause know coach has never tried to support his players. Nope. Did/would you expect him to say he was/is worried about PJ academically to the media even if he was/is? Really?

Right now PJ is eligible. We will see if he remains eligible. For you not to understand why so many are reserved based on his previous 2 years then I don't know what to tell you. If you you want to continue to have blind faith and believe everything that comes out of BOB's mouth is gold then so be it.
