Devon Still invited to NFL Draft

  • I haven't seen this posted yet so I figured I'd share it for those who haven't heard. Devon Still was one of twenty six players invited to the NFL draft activities in NYC.

  • Mock Drafts are obviously just guesses but I haven't seen him going first round in a while. Wonder if he passes up this opportunity.

  • About 75% of the mocks I've seen have him in the late first. Seen as high as mid 20s with Pittsburgh / Denver as 3-4 DE lately... personally I think he'll slip a little further... based on higher need for those teams.

But New England has 2 late first round picks = a great fit for him.... + the majority of the teams who made the playoffs this year and have late 1st round picks run a 3-4. I think Still would be an excellent 3-4 end.

As a 49ers fan, I'm hoping he slips to pick 30 and we take him.... or best Wisconsin lineman or Cordy Glenn if he falls. WR can wait. We have a great front 3 with McDonald, Sopoaga, and J Smith but the depth is GREATLY lacking behind them. Maybe Ricky Jean-Francois (lunatic and kind of an ass)... but the cupboard is bare.... and Justin Smith isn't getting younger.

  • I'm glad Devon was invited, that's awesome.

As I was looking for the article on ESPN I came across McShay and Mel Kiper Jr draft expert (haha) go at it over Ryan Tannenhill. It gets heated during the last 30 seconds or so. I hope you all enjoy

2012 NFL draft -- Indianapolis Colts' Jim Irsay says trade for No. 3 if you want Ryan Tannehill - ESPN

Jim Irsay has his pick of quarterbacks Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III with his Indianapolis Colts owning the No. 1 overall pick. He's also, however, trying to play matchmaker for quarterback prospect Ryan Tannehill through his Twitter account.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

I saw this today when I was home during lunch on SportsCenter. It's always pretty comical when the two of them go at it over their thoughts/opinions on prospects. Never a dull moment.

Mike Mayock, from the NFL Network, had him going around twenty-ninth or thirtieth.

I have heard some talk that Still might fall out of the first round. However, those draftniks have been on Still since he "skipped" the SR bowl (they won't accept that he was playing injured in the Houston Bowl). These draftniks, however, do have some legit connections so I find it hard to know what is personal opinion and what is legit information.

Also, people are talking about the depth at the top of this DT class (Fletcher, Poe, Brockers, Worthy). Plus, the second round talent (Wolfe, Thompson, Reyes and Ta'amu) as reason for his slide....

Although, I do like San Francisco as a perfect fit for him at the end of the first round.

  • I think Still will go end of first round or early second.

  • Agreed. And that draft position depth is what has me hoping that DL is the pick @ #30. Probably a legit "best player available" situation matching up with "need" for the 49ers. The 4th-7th best at the position this year could still be "top 20" talent when its all said and done. Could be aby of the DL you mentioned depending on evaluation for the 3-4 Defense. Also watch for Chandler Jones.

  • Still needs to bulk up..period. Wisky pushed him around like a school girl. This just shows how poor our S&C program was. Look how big Evan Royster got just months after being here. I think Still will have a solid career and would love to see him drafted by the Steelers because Hampton is nearing the end.

...and if you're not down with that, then I got 2 words for ya.."suck it!!"

What about those Bama linemen against Still? He did pretty well.

I think if he had the new S&C program for his collegiate career, he definitely would be a better player IMO.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

Also, Still would be looking at an end in the 3-4, so he would not be replacing Hampton. He is at a good size for that position.

JC I'm rooting for him to go to the 9ers also. Think he would fit in well there, or he could go to one of the Patriots late 1st rd picks.

  • .... and to be fair... Wisconsin's line wasn't Devon Still 1:1 all game long w/ one guy. That's one extremely well coached, very strong / well put-together, NFL ready interior OL.... and they didn't have to worry one bit about any extra attention going against our DE's.

Nonetheless... Wisky beat Still pretty good all game.

Didnt he also have the turf toe for the Wisky game (with the Houston game)? Thought I read that somewhere before.

Would love to see him as a Steeler, but I don't think DL is the highest area of need at round one. But, you never know what the Steelers will do, they've suprised me in the past in round one, sometimes for the good and sometimes a head scratcher.
