Delany ... "the driving force is demographics, but when you look at it, you can’t help but think this is good for Penn State as well."

    Rittenberg/Bennett ‏@ESPN_BigTen
Thought it was telling that he mentioned Penn State in answer. Had heard some chatter about Penn State possibly looking elsewhere.

Wonder how loud this chatter was and how much the last expansion move of was appease Penn State.

The Big doesn't do anything to appease PSU.

They did if the chatter about Penn State looking around was true, Penn State leaving would have crushed the BTN and future TV deals.

At this point so many teams have been linked to being the 15th and 16th team that B1G will be at 20. The one thing about Texas is it would not be hard for the B1G to absorb the Longhorn Network.

So really, they're worried about losing Philly? Everyone has been saying that Pitt can't get in because they dont bring a new TV market--I'm sure they would have jumped at a chance to take PSU's spot.

People in PA don't care about Pitt outside of Pittsburgh. Then you have the massive alumni base down the East Coast that PSU brings. Pitt in no way shape or form would come close to being an equivalent replacement.

Can you explain what you mean by that last statement?

  • If psu left, the big 10 loses the whole east coast. It would take a combination of Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Maryland to cover Psu's footprint.

People in Pittsburgh don't even care about Pitt. But your point is valid.

This. He hasn't been right once. Most recently he said there was nothing to the Rutgers/MD deal.

About PSU leaving and it crushing future deals - you're absolutely right. PA is the 6th largest state according to the 2010 census. We had 12.7 million people in the state, and only 100k behind Illinois for tops in the Big Ten region. Philly is the 4 TV market in the country, and Chicago no 3.

The Big Ten cannot lose those markets before coming up for negotiations. Not to mention forget about any city on the east coast without PSU. Even a wiff of PSU leaving would put a hamper on it.

Now, I don't know if I believe that they added those two eastern teams because we threatened to leave, but the timing is somewhat curious. I think it points more towards Delaney wanted to have everything in place and solid before negotiations in a few years though.

(pre-Nebraska) he posted about a possible ND and Texas addition where each would only play 7 conference games. Delany immediately came out saying he was going to crack down on any leakers inside the B1G offices because they were hurting the process. That seemed to give PBC a lot of validity. He also had Nebraska to the B1G slightly ahead of everyone else.

Personally, I think he has a "source", but I think the source uses him to put things out there and get various schools nervous. The problem is that no one takes him seriously anymore for that strategy to work. He has posted the most about TX over the last couple years.

So, the BIG appeased PSU with this, knowing there was strong movement to boot PSU out of the league? Not buying.

Do you think that Delaney wanted PSU out? Absolutely not. Some worked up university presidents who were out for blood sure, but not the guy who is solely responsible for making the Big Ten money.

And if they had to re-vote now, I guarantee you it would go differently. People were emotional and worked up. I think its entirely plausible that after people sat back and thought about how much money they would lose they wouldn't have come to the conclusion to cast a vote to toss PSU.

Some other schools wanted Penn State out not Delaney, he knows what Penn State brings and would have been lost if they were kicked out.

Penn State brings in more money for the conference than any other school.

  • Assuming ND and Texas never come to join the B1G...

I think the B1G should lock up FSU (which is the flavor of the week right now), forget about GT, great school but not sure they'd really bring the Atlanta market and I'd rather have UVA.

Hopefully FSU bolting shakes the ACC up enough that UVA leaves for B1G, with VT going SEC maybe GT to big 12 and then we wait out for UNC and Duke.

UVA, FSU, UNC, DUKE .....would be awesome bball wise and really improve our conference academically (though football not so much).

    MidnightRider

  • The bottom line is that Jim Delaney didn't bring in Rutgers and Maryland to appease PSU. It was a strict money grab. And I don't just mean the cable subs. This move, the first of which will ultimately cripple the ACC as we now know it, was calculated. Delaney knew Penn State was unhappy. He can't afford to have us leave in a couple of years. So what does he do, he smartly starts the dominoes to fall in the ACC where PSU would likely look. He didn't appease Penn State with this move, he trapped Penn State in his conference. Whether you are a fan of the Big Ten or not, there's no way we ever leave now.

According to Barry Alvarez, Delany added Rutgers and MD in part because he doesnt want to lose PSU.

I threw this up on the Blue Board too so I could spark some "intellectual debate"

There is no intellectual debate when it comes to PSU on the Blue Board.

FSU, more than likely, doesn't meet the academic standards of the BIG. It's not a good school.
