  • I hope OB has talked to players about why he interviewed becuase I know they have to be confused, uncertain and upset....alot of same emotions as we felt I am sure.

    Its going to be interesting to see how he handles those questions - but i really hope he reaches out and everybody enrolls for spring semester.

    most recruits - yes....some players and even recruits didn't think it would go as far as with the interview and were def upset on twitter.

  • When the players see the change around Lasch and within the AD, they will understand why Coach took the seemingly drastic measures he undertook over the past week. They understand the inner workings much better than we do, so have to imagine they will see the improvements more drastically too... As for future recruits, Coach can walk into any living room, of any recruit in the country and tell them he could be coaching anywhere in the world right now, and he choose PSU, make the same decision and they can go win a championship together...

  • I think it's fine. Was there some concern last night? It definitely crept in. But it was what, 1 recruit and I'm not even sure a single player on the team was concerned. You could say MAYBE Barnes and Smith, but that's pretty questionable.

    Meh. The only worried parties were us internet folk.

  • I think everyone needs to get over it. Coaches interview for positions and change jobs all the time. It's part of the business. I think the players realize that and they are capable of putting everything behind them with no hard feelings. When someone on the other end of the phone wants to offer you millions of dollars to coach on the highest level, how do you not at least take that call? I'm sure he loves the players, but they'll be gone in a few years. Is he supposed to stay put just because he loves the school and this group of players? It's just part of the business.

    This stuff happens all the time. Even Joe Paterno interviewed and was thisclose to coaching the New England Patriots in the early '80s. Just business.

    That's true...and that's because many here and on other siites spend hours per day on here. We also live in this "need to know" world where every piece of news feels like it is at our fingertips. Yesterday probably felt like 2 weeks for some, when in reality, this stuff happens(ed) all the time, we just don't always hear about it because it was with us.

    If you blinked or took the day off from tv yesterday, you would have came on today to find out OB is staying and be like "what? he was leaving to begin with?"

    Why did it take this for the univ to act. Why couldn’t thing be hashed out without interviews. Why did you interview if you aren’t a one and done guy and wouldn’t “cut and run on these kids”…what makes us think this wont happen again and again…we are in a unique situation and need the commitment. If they meet his demands which seem less about money and more about structure, stability and resources will he stay? What do you tell recruits and new 2014 kids now since ur obv considering leaving? Tyler Boyd (WR) announces today I and we are on the list, why would he commit to you if you are obv not 100% committed? I have lots of questions and hope he has a great way to spin this because he has def proven that usually, he is the smartest guy in the room.

    I'd agree with you if BOB had been at Penn State a few years already but not after one. The only coaches who leave after one year are all major tools (Todd Graham, Bobby Petrino, etc.)

  • Bottom line - BOB received some concessions from PSU that will only make them a better program. Sometimes you need to push the right buttons in order to get things done. The higher the demand BOB is in, the more PSU has to give to keep him. In this case, the media was used to force PSU's hand (don't think he ever planned on leaving). This is common practice in modern day football. Seeing how one source was responsible for 90% of the insider information, it may be safe to assume the source was speaking through the agent. Les Miles has this down to a science. I do think the players and recruits were in the loop however.

  • Looking at the entirety of what happened, sure seems like this was simply a power play on BOB's part. I think that's a pretty simple explanation he can give to players and recruits, especially considering he warned them beforehand that his name would be out there.

    However, I do think we're back to having a coach who may or may not be here the next year, and the negative recruiting that goes along with that.

    Having the brand out there in an athletic capacity is not so bad. Spin doctoring can always be done.

Would the job have "tugged at his heart strings" or Obrien not have been a "one and done guy" if he had gotten an offer, if we didnt give him a million plus more per year, or PSU didnt cave to his demands.........those statements were his first attempts at damage control. I cant imagine there is no fallout, with recruits or the current roster, to this charade.

    In any case, glad to hang onto him for at least another year

  • You're completely ignoring the buyout dude. Thats a huge obstacle for even pro teams. Notice how once word of his interviewing came out, the news that he was staying followed shortly after. That smells link brinksmanship to me. School pushed with the enormous buyout, BOB pushed back with the threat of leaving. Without reports that teams were serious about paying the buyout, there really wasn't a need to worry. These kids love their coach. If someone leaves it won't be because of this.

    I did see the rest of that quote posted. I don't really think the quote is a big deal either way. He's said from the outset that "I'll be here as long as they'll have me." Not to mention the whole actions over words thing.

    JMO, but I don't see the administration backing out of any promises. It sounds like Lubert and Pegula went to quite a bit of effort to keep BOB. I'm confident they have enough influence here to see those promises through.

  • I don't know the truth, but from everything I read this is what I gather....

    - OB took this job with plans to be here at least 5 years before jumping back to the NFL as a HC
    - the seriousness of the sanctions caught him off guard (because he had assurances from Joyner when he took the job)
    - OB sucked it up and and overcame it
    - He became a hot commodity and the calls he expected to get in 4-5 years were coming now.
    - I truly believe he was torn a little. I believe he wants to be an NFL head coach and saw this PSU gig as a great place to cut his teeth and build his resume. Then, the unanticipated sanctions hit, PSU leadership is giving him headaches, and the NFL is calling NOW.
    - I think OB wanted to keep his word and stick to his plan to be here for years, but the PSU brass screwing with him in one ear combined with the NFL calling in the other really made him consider his options. In the NFL he would run the show at PSU he had to ask permission from a pompous, lying medical doctor to get what he needed.

    Ultimately, I think he's in a win-win situation now. because of the sanctions, he'll be graded on a curve for the next 5 years and anything better than 6-6 is a win. When he blows that mark out of the water he'll only increase his stock and I think he can and will.

    Was just going to say this. Joe was negatively recruited against based on his age and the "you never know if he'll be around next year." BOB simply needs to respond "Do you know when Urban's next heart issue will arise? Do you know if Charlie Weis will survive his next cheeseburger? You never know."
