DB Day for the Combine

  • Who else gets exited for this one? Really the 40.

I know I do. Probably because I was never able to sniff that type of speed and find it very impressive. WR day is good too of course for this at times, I just like the DB's a bit more.

Also like seeing Rich run his 40. And then the technology comparing him with the fastest of the fast lol

I don't know...maybe I'm in the minority....but I don't give a rats arce about the 40 time. I think it's all hyped up nonsense where they make it out that .05 second differences between two people is such a big deal. I especially dislike it because they do it without pads, and that means nothing when it comes to an actual game.

but, that's just me. I much prefer actual game-like things such as the catching, throwing, etc drills

I dont give a rats furry backside either when it comes to how I feel about them as football players(within reason of course). Im with ya there. I care about how a guy plays in pads.

I like to watch them run though. Which is why I specifically talked about the 40. :)

    Gotchya.

I do find it comical though watching how they all break it down to the last inch on how you hold the fingernail on your left index finger prior to taking off....and how THAT can be the difference between a 4.41 and a 4.45.

Extremes for sure. And like you mentioned, crazy insane type "factors" lol

I dont know, to me you are fast enough or not, combined with your other skill sets. i.e. play recognition and instincts, at this level game study/tendency and applying what you learn to your play, quickness/change of direction, acceleration, and so on.

Just speed is something you can find on track teams all over, though some obviously arent as big, or dont have to mentality to handle the physical part of the game. Just speed though isnt what I am looking for in my football players.

  • The difference of .1 between a player doesn't make a difference on the field IMO, but it is a measurable. These guys are so talented somehow they need to score it but in the end I'm sure scouts ignore data.

  • Anyone see Vick Ballard fall and run into the camera? Got a laugh outta that.

    It's on yahoo's front page.

Some probably even just focus on how disciplined the player is in the first place to try and develop an extra advantage. Not the results being what matters, but the process to see how hard a player will work/listen to instruction in order to improve.

  • twocents It's really the size of the 4.4 that matters. A 235 lb. 4.4 running back > 160 lb. 4.4 slot guy. I'd rather stop the 160 lb. 4.4 slot guy! Assuming of course I too had 4.4 stuff.

  • headslap These combines are amazing! To think, in the "old days" scouts actually watched kids PLAY FOOTBALL.

    jayer

  • I don't think we would need the combine if schools wouldn't lie about the kids measuables. You see program listing guys an inch or two taller then what they are. I think the nfl is a information league and they like as much info as they can get. But I do agree that sometimes you just need to put the tape in to see if a kid can play ball.

  • The first group of DB's wasn't particularly impressive in the 40. They're all getting so big these days. It's hard to run a legit 4.4 at 190+ pounds, regardless of how fast you are.

  • So Lynn was 4.72 and 4.76? Ouch.

Powell ran in the low 4.5s and looks good too. I think Powell is more likely to make a squad than Lynn.

  • Wow, that is slow for Lynn. That is close to Jack Crawford's time I believe. Hopefully he scores well in other areas and gets a shot somewhere.

Yikes. Time for Lynn to move to safety.

i didn't think Lynn would run in the 4.7s but no way did i think he would run in the 4.5s

no way he would have been a CB in college in anything other than a zone D

Both guys hit 17 reps on the bench, which was solid. Neither did particularly well in vert leap (Lynn tied for dead last). Powell is obviously the better athlete, while Lynn is probably a better football player. Lynn will need a great showing at the Pro Day to get reconsidered, but I'm not sure either guy gets drafted at this point.

Lynn had a pretty miserable year last year, and needed to show scouts he wasn't as unathletic as he seemed.

He might get a shot at safety in the last round or maybe the 6th, but I doubt he sticks. A good candidate for a UFA though.

  • I have been ranting for several years about how slow Lynn is, and even I didn't think he was a 4.77.

This could be labeled under the heading of "Posts from 2008". I always said they did this kid an injustice for his pro prospects by not playing him at Safety. He is not a CB.

I personally never expected either of these guys to get drafted, and I still don't. These guys are trying out for shots at UFA contracts.

IMO Green had (has) a better chance of getting drafted. And I don't think he has much of a chance of getting drafted.
