wow that is very shocking! best of luck to Roof though! .. Butler is unproven, but knowing that he worked really close with Roof tells me that he wont miss a beat.
Penn State Football 2012: The Next Chapter (episode 4) John Butler -- Secondary Coach / Special Teams Coordinator

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttttttttttttttt I can dream about it.
Ethridge could move up from Grad assistant. Wouldn't mind Roman Morris either.
Wasn't he a major player with Walton (now good as gone I assume) and Neiko? Anyone else we need to worry about leaving because of this?
It's one heck of a coincidence if this isn't connected to BOB's "power play." He specifically mentioned asst salaries in his press conference. Wonder if Roof was a specific example of an asst he thought might leave if PSU didn't pay him more.
Bring in Vernon Hargreaves' father!
Or Troy Vincent
I like Butler but I would be pissed if I was LJ or Vandy. Hopefully they don't leave. I wonder why they were passed over?
In all honesty, we have some solid coaches on defense in Vandy and LJ. I am sure Butler will be supported very much by them.
I saw Butler becoming a D-Coordinator within at least 3 years after we saw his fire, passion, energy, enthusiasm, etc...Didnt think itd come this quick.
"Whoever’s trying to kill me isn’t getting the job done. But one day, I’m going to punch that f___r in the face."
At least everyone has something to argue and debate about other than URI replacing UVA on the schedule...
lol wow that is a serious wish there... that would be great. Hopefully his son would follow!
Maybe they didnt want the job and are happy with what they have? I mean they both couldve went elsewhere for D-Coordinator positions but chose to stay.
Nice southern roots there.
Butler's going to be a HC at some point in the future. He has all the makings of a guy in that role. I don't see any issue with giving him the nod at DC.
Because LJ and Vandy aren't BOB's guys and I think even they know that. I often wonder if LJ even wants to be a D coordinator, same with Vandy. They both would/have had able opportunities to leave and take a coordinator job but both have stayed. I think when Butler was hired it was know that he was the "air apparent" and I think BOB told him that or he never would have came to PSU. JMO though.
I believe Etheridge was promoted to DBs...He was recently thought to lead for the DB position at Troy, but his latest tweets and his profile says DB coach at Penn State, lead me to believe this.
I've heard this before, but I know very little about him.
Why do people keep saying that?
I feel LJ and Vandy are perfectly happy where they are...and are compensated accordingly. I am sure this is not a point of contention, and I dont think either are unhappy.
I agree with the statement to do anything to bring Bobby Engram into the fold.
I appreciate Roof's year of service; however, I'm looking forward to seeing what John Butler can do. The guy certainly brings his passion bucket to work.
Yeah, I think this is a case where they are just content. LJ could have went to Illinois and Vandy has done it all. It's not like they were going to move up under Paterno.
Would you trade Stan Hixon for Engram? IDK... I like them both.
Pssshhh... I think it is a wash. Hixon is probably the better coach at this point, but Engram is going to be a superstar recruiter, IMO.
And I'm sure BOB has no shortage of guys that want to work for him... he;'s probably got 10 very good coaches on speed dial, even if we never heard of them.
Ya know, the vacant coaching hire doesn't HAVE to be a DB coach.
Didn't Butler also have special teams responsibilities as well as DB coach?
Perhaps he has a role as D-Coordinator/DB coach and we hire a ST Coordinator.
Just a thought.

Ted Roof obviously tired of being mistaken for Graham Spanier.
Good one Sean, lol.
