Calling it right now our offense scores more & the doomsday defense is back!
We're coming for you Urban!!!!!!
PENN STATE FOREVER
Love the optimism Phila!
"You can take bowl games and you can take external things from people, but you can't take a warrior's heart."
I agree phila.
I think our offense puts up similar, or possibly better numbers than last year with a full year of Zwinak as our main back. I'm not overly concerned about QB but it is a minor concern.
Definitely issues on D. I'm really worried about our front 7, specifically our front 4 as a whole. Need guys to step up BIG TIME!
"DOMINATE the state" - James Franklin 1/11/14
I love the optimism Phila!
Josh, I also agree that ZZ will continue to shine and we should see some improvement. He at least has to get better holding onto the ball. I think Barnes and Zettel (at DE and DT) will be beasts this year and I think LJ will have the rest ready for action. I am a little concerned, but not too much.
We'll be better at DE, worse at DT, worse at LB, and I'm guessing the same in the secondary.
Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Name. All Game.
Agree except I'm optimistic about the secondary. I think it could actually be a strength if we stay healthy.
There is plenty of very good young talent up front on defense. The LB took a huge hit but Carson and Hull could give us two stud LB's, which is still more than most teams. (Injuries will kill us here). DB will be better and more experienced. The biggest wild card and unknown is how Butler will tie it all together. I make it a point to not bring up transfers but the transfer of Fortt looms very large this year.
I think our depth is a lot better, but kids like Davis and Lucas will have to show a lot better than they did to be a better player than Stephon Morris. We've gotten a bit slower back there, younger as well though - so perhaps some of the younger talent will step up.
Fortt was a bit overrated, because while he was a beast physically - he never seemed to have the instinct for the position. He also seems to have a lot of bad luck with durability. He would have provided a body, but just the little I saw of Wartman convinces we won't miss Fortt too much, at least as a starter. Of course all that depends on whether you view him as an OLB or a MLB.
I like Carson, and think he is steady, strong and tough. But he's too limited athletically to be considered a "stud". I view him as somewhere between Gino Capone and Josh Hull - JMO.
I actually like the starting 3 of Wartman, Hull, and Carson though. Hull and Wartman are actually little more athletic than Hodges and Mauti, though obviously not as seasoned and technically skilled (yet) at those positions - and Hull isn't as instinctive as Mauti. Then again almost no one else in the country was either. but what worries me about the backers is depth. At that position, you definitely need to be able to rotate kids, or they'll get worn out by the 4th Quarter.
We need some productive snaps out of Kline and Wooten, and Issah and Brandon Bell need to be ready to fill from summer onwards. I'm reasonably optimistic we get that, with Vandy coaching them up.
Are you sure?? I could have sworn somebody said he was the best LB on the team and deserved more PT.
Oh wait....that was him!!! Never mind.
You have got to be kidding me!? I know it's not PC to say anything that could be interpreted as negative about Josh Hull, but Carson is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of where Josh Hull was before his sr. year.
Gino Capone and Josh Hall were about neck and neck coming into Hall's senior year. It wasn't until later in his senior year that Hull started to separate himself from Gino Capone. When Hull was at his best (the very end of his Sr. year), he was *maybe* in the ballpark with Carson.
Glenn Carson, while maybe not deserving of the "stud" label at this point, should not be mentioned in in the same breath as Capone or Hull.
So don't mention an NFL linebacker in the same breath as Glenn Carson? ok.
Haha. That rant did seem a little excessive. I wasn't a Josh Hull fan but you can't argue that he ended up being a good linebacker in the end.
Yep, and I think his athleticism makes him a little better than Carson. This is a kid that kept a lot of talent on the sideline, and it's not like Vanderlinden and Bradley don't know their linebackers. you'd be hard pressed to see where they made a glaring mistake at that position.
Anyway, I think Carson is pretty good in his own right, just not someone I'd consider a great LB.
Carson is a way better LB than Hull, and I liked Hull.
People seriously under value Carson. He is a mid round draft pick.
I view Carson as a guy who lacks sideline to sideline speed but he is great against the run. I would put him way ahead of Josh Hull. He pushed 100 tackles playing beside two of our best in recent memory. I look for him to be over 100 tackles, but more importantly, fill Mauti's leadership void. I think Hull is going to do everything for us and then some. I think our third LB will complement well. An injury though to Hull or Carson would kill us. The paper thin depth is where the sanctions are starting to do their thing. Other than depth at the skilled positions on offense, we are so thin everywhere, with next year being even worse.
Are you saying Glenn Carson won't be an NFL linebacker?
Or, are you comparing Josh Hull today to Glenn Carson today?
Both of those would be the wrong.
If you want to compare them, you need to compare them at the same point in their career.
And when you do that -- When you look at Josh Hull at the end of his Jr. year, he was nowhere even close to where Glenn Carson was at the the end of last year. Nowhere even close.
Exactly. I'm not ripping on Hull. Carson is just way better than where Hull was at the same point (between jr and sr seasons).
Hull came on strong towards the end of his senior year.
Carson could be a mid round draft pick, and is the best LB we have on our roster right now bar none.
Kid is about to be a 3 year starter ladies and gentlemen, and didn't even RS…I don't count that GS btw since it was because of surgery.
Carson is pretty darn good linebacker that a lot of other BT teams would probably love to have. We've been spoiled at linebacker to the extent that if a guy isn't a sure fire early round draft pick, we tend to not be impressed. IMO carson is going to surprise a lot of casual fans this year. He's was flanked by two guys that got ALL the hype last year and was ultimately just "the other guy" to a lot of fans. He's strong against the run, but his weakness is in coverage. my other observation of casual fans is that they notice when linebackers get beat on passes because it's out in the open and usually a bigger gain. They tend not notice all the run stuffing in traffic.
I think we'll see a similar set up this year with Carson in the base set, but coming off in the nickel. I wouldn't be shocked to see him win some post season awards and be a draft pick in 2014. Not for nothing, he's the player with the most starts under his belt on the whole team too.
I like Optimistic Phila much better than Hide-the-Sharp-Objects Doomsday Phila.
I guess it helps, of course, that the Phillies and Eagles aren't in season.
