Anyone else excited for the TE combo of Gilliam & Haplea? I think Gilliam has the size to be a monster hopefully he hasnt lost a step due to surgury and I think Haplea has really been under utilized in his first two years at PSU. I also like the fact that BOB is recruiting and focusing on size and physicality in his players as i think those are the types of teams that are usually widely successful.
Yes - very exiting. I think both can be big contributors as long as 2 other things happen: 1) the rest of the o line plays well and can create throwing lanes, and 2) whoever is QB can read the D and make the right decision and execute. Two big ifs, but hope it happens. This will also be a learning and stepping stone season, so expect TE play to get even more exciting in the future at PSU. Can't wait.
There is certainly a direct correlation between great PSU offenses and great production from the TE. I realize it is a completely new system now but even in the past, guys like Brady, Quarless and even Brackett (when he played the 4th WR/H-Back role) helped open up the rest of the offense because they had to be accounted for.
I think Haplea and Gilliam are in for big seasons, and I am hoping they get some help from Carter, Wilkerson, James, or K Carter.
You mentioned Brady, Quarless and Brackett. But the best ever was Ted Kwalick, way back in the late 60s. Bob Parsons was a monster quarterback who converted to tight end in the early 70s. Frankly, Penn State has always had great tight end production until Quarless left Happy Valley. Not sure why they stopped going to the tight ends because the throws tend to be short but can be high-yield for first downs and touchdowns. BOB will make it fun to play tight end at Penn State!
