I've read recently that the total scholarship reductions to 65 doesn't go into effect until 2014 and lasts through 2017. I thought it would be in effect beginning next football season, 2013 and run through 2016. Does the 65 schollie limit run from 2014-2017?
Yep, it's 2014 to 2017.
Okay, most of you will tell me I'm crazy. And I probably am. But regarding these scholarship "limitations," wouldn't it be cool if it turned out that the 65 schollies provided a competitive ADVANTAGE? Okay, at least read one more paragraph before you start screaming!
With just 65 players on scholarship: PSU will have fewer schollie holders on the 3rd and 4th strings who are griping about a lack of playing time. Greater selectivity in giving scholarships, thus leading to a higher-character team. More hard-working walk-ons, giving their all to win a scholarship or just to play for a major college power. More time for each coach to focus on a smaller number of players. An added incentive to win as an underdog. A more enthusiastic, less-spoiled fan base that appreciates the players' effort and truly provides emotional support.
All right, now you can tell me I'm crazy. But I think it would be the coolest achievement imaginable if we won the BIg Ten with 65 scholarships. Who says it can't be done? I'll bet Hack and Breneman are planning on it!
