Mark May was reported to have said that PSU's 8 win season is the best 8 win season ever. Was this said as a backhanded compliment or did he momentarily pull his head from his arse.
"I tell guys, 'Would you rather go to a Volkswagen dealership to get a Cadillac, or do you go to Cadillac?' "
-- LJ, Sr.
Link, I find it hard to believe May would say anything positive regarding PSU.
He is an arrogant $%$#@%^ jaded by the fact Joe wouldn't recruit him to Penn State. I guess he is just upset he had no choice but to go to Pitt, I guess I would hold a grudge too.
I actually heard it. To paraphrase, Penn State's 8 wins was the greatest 8 win season in the history of College football.
Who is Mark May??? I could care less if he complimented PSU, said negative things, or just kept his mouth shut. Well, on 2nd thought...would love for him to just keep his mouth shut!!
I tell ya folks...the tide is turning. Can't stand to listen to Mark May, but am thrilled to hear him acknowledge what we all know...even if it is just once.
Don't be confused...a lot of these people, Mark May included, had a distaste for JVP. All they are doing now is jumping on the feel good bandwagon. He doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to criticize PSU right now and go against the grain. Our family proved that we are now stronger than ever....continuing to beat his anti-psu drum is a losing proposition for him..so he is just riding the media feel good story which was created by the media itself
You are absolutely correct. I just love to hear him (and others) change their tunes to sing our praises...knowing that it is probably killing them. (Perverse, I know!)
I don't have a problem with it. Our BOT and Administration shouldn't have put us in a position to be torn down.
The tide is changing and we need it to more than any other program in america.
The media is starting to kiss BOB's butt. They're seeing what a damn good coach he is and realizing nobody is left with the program that did anything wrong, which is what we've all been saying since last summer.
But NOW they're saying it b/c it's a feel good story. The media as a whole is a bunch of sheep. They all follow the same story line, good or bad. Mark May has spit vitriol at PSU for years. He's a Pitt homer and the major reason I no longer watch College Gameday.
We shouldn't mistake the media's love of BOB for some kind of renewed faith in PSU. They still can't stand PSU and will build BOB up in the hopes of him leaving PSU. They still want our program to burn but can't say that right now, so they'll do the next best thing, compliment our coach to the point where he's "too good" for PSU.
If they want to stand up for PSU, then start calling for the sanctions to be removed. They punish absolutely NOBODY that did anything wrong are an egregious abuse of power by the NCAA.
I don't trust any media members, and ESPN is by far the absolute worst.
Couldn't have said it better.
This is a very unsophisticated view. Sure, a few members of the media have an inherent bias against Penn State....and Mark May is absolutely one of those. But the vast majority are simply looking for as many juicy stories as they can find....to pump ratings or sell newspapers. Unfortunately, the Penn State story was ultra juicy for them because it involved a sex scandal and the apparent tarnishing of a legendary coach's reputation. Now that BoB is pulling things together, the media has another great story to tell---the rehabilitation of a once-storied program, coming back to life like a phoenix.
Don't get me wrong. I have a huge distaste for ESPN. I refer to that network as the "Evil Empire." There's no question in my mind that they dropped all journalistic objectivity in order to ride this sensational story. But let's realize what's really going on. It's all about money....and for the media, money comes from readership/viewership. Right now, the "Story" is positive, so media outlets like ESPN are singing Penn State's praises. We can afford to enjoy a little of this as a counter-balance to all the garbage we've heard for the last year! At the very least it will help recruiting!
+1 Well Said....
Too many on here think everyone in the world is out to get Penn State which isn't the case at all. They don't build us up only to bring us down. PSU built us up and brought us down all on our own power. We have no one to blame but our own coaches, administrators, and BOT who didn't do the right thing. Our coaches, administrators, and BOT put us in a position to be ripped down and the media just ran with the story. Now that we have a coach who is a good story the media is going to run with that which is great.
I take exception to your "unsophisticated view" comment. I was not aware this message board was for sophisticated views only, and you are the judge of what is considered sophisticated or not. That is a very ignorant view.
That said, no shit it's about money. You have a firm grasp on the obvious. You used a lot of words to express a very simplistic idea that we are all aware of already.
As much of a feel good story BOB and PSU is right now, the fact remains that our very own BOT and administration let the media drive the narrative for the past year and caused irreparable harm to our University. They have not been held accountable AT ALL, to the point where Peetz completely dismisses any criticism of her and the BOT.
IMHO, they've shown nothing but contempt for the fans & alumni and they know we can't do a damn thing about it. They can't be removed and the media has by and large ignored their role in the scandal. By ducking and hiding and letting Paterno and the football program take the fall, they're getting exactly what they wanted, a free pass and no responsibility for the scandal.
They remain the biggest problem with our University and need to be held accountable some way, some how for their role(s) in the scandal and their epic incompetence in the wake of the scandal.
The BOT has been absolutely terrible since the scandal broke i will agree with you there. But as far as we know... they aren't the ones responsible for allowing Sandusky on campus all these years. They weren't the ones who heard first hand from a graduate assistant that he saw some innapropriate activity in the shower. They weren't the ones who saw Sandusky showering with TSM kids in the locker rooms multiple times over the years.
The coaches, JoePa, and the administration dug us the hole we are in now. Unfortunately, the BOT isn't helping us get out of it but they didn't put us in it.
