... That Penn State will finish 6-6. He says we are on a down slope moving forward. I wonder what Evil Bill O'Brian has to say about that?
EDIT: OOPS, it's ESPN insider. He essentially says that it while it is impressive the job BO'B has done so far this year, and finishing 6-6 would not be a disappointment. But he still thinks we're going to suck the last half and get blown out, at home, by OSU.
Phil Steele provides his top candidates to cool off after fast starts, in addition to the teams that will turn things around after poor early results, in the second half of the season.

Hm. So does OSU count as 4 losses then?
Losing 4 possible, but I'd consider that absolute worst case scenario. We'll see if he's right or not.
Anyone remember what Steele predicted for us before the season (and I think before the transfers left)?

I'm pretty surprised to hear that. While it's unlikely we go 6-0, I don't see this as a team that would do anything but get better as the year goes on.
What did he predict before the season started? I will assume it was less than 6 wins.

He says the wins over Navy, Temple, Illinois, and Northwestern were well.... weak wins. And that our schedule gets much tougher.
I agree the schedule gets tougher. But I think our boys will be fired up and ready to go.
Rejuvenated Iowa (i can see that after the win last week, gives them some confidence)
Ohio State best team in conference
Back-to-back Road trips to Purdue and Nebraska
Wisconsin is on the upswing.
I'll look to see if I can find it...
That wouldn't be that bad of a prediction if the rest of the B1G wasn't so terrible this year. Even OSU looks like it's a game we could win.
There are areas in which we can get even better. PSU has progressed quite a bit since the season opener. However, the final six opponents have equal room to improve in areas as well. Out of our final opponents, only Wisconsin might be seeing the light and turning it around a bit. Iowa is bland; OSU has a major problem on defense, as does Nebraska and Purdue could be coming back to reality. Indiana all the sudden won't find the defense needed.
Who knows what happens.
Screw Phil Steele.

Yeah...the best team in the conference gave up 49 points to Indiana last week...
While I don't think this team will finish the season with 6 wins, I think they are much better than anyone is giving them credit for. Nothing like these guys giving the team more motivation...
I can agree with him somewhat on this stuff (except 1. NW being a weak win, and 2. the "rejuvenation" of Iowa - I'd love to ask him why our win over NW wasn't a "rejuvenation" win). Personally, I think he's severely overrating some of these teams, but that's JMO.
We'll see. And I have a feeling BOB will be shoving it in his face.
Methinks Phil has something against OB or the new era Penn State.
Maybe he is upset about Sandusky? It truly boggles the mind...

I'm still not sold on Wisconsin. They've had some solid wins, but over less-than-impressive teams.
EDIT -- I'll add in response to Steele: our wins may be against weak teams, but they are not weak wins. They were dominant wins against weak teams. The NW and Temple wins didn't reflect that in the score, but we still dominated both of them. I think he's dismissing that fact far too easily.
Those of you bashing Phil, go easy. He's just calling it like he sees it. The 2nd half of our schedule is definitely a difficult one. If you look at the teams we've beaten, it's not the most impressive list (although... after looking at it, they don't seem like bad wins at all...).
I can understand someone looking at our upcoming schedule and saying we only have 2 wins left. I don't agree with him, but I understand the logic.
As opposed to all of the convincing wins by Ohio State, led of course by a slim margin over powerhouse Indiana. He may turn out to be correct, but even so his logic is flawed. I'm finding his analysis this year is completely antithetical to what he usually does with Penn State. I wouldn't be surprised if he is not a fan of either our new style of play, or of how the school handled things with Joe.

The only Steele I ever trusted was George "The Animal".....
I dont see us going 2-4 in the second half, nor do I see 6-0. I certainly dont think 4-2 is out of the question though:
Iowa - Definitely winnable. They certainly dont look impressive, and losing the RB hurts them, but Kinnick at night will still be tough. I still say winnable.
OSU - swing game...not a sure L like it seemed a few weeks ago. The fact that Indiana put up so many points has to concern OSU fans. I think we will score, but so will OSU. Last team with the ball wins?
Purdue - should be a win. I have not seen them play this year, but see no reason why we cant win.
Nebraska - tough game. Still not sure what Nebraska is all about yet. Turnovers hurt them against OSU, and obviously their D had 63 scored against them. Could go either way.
Indiana - win
Wisconsin - Like Nebraska, I have no read on this team. A healthy Ball is huge for them, but I still cant get past the games I have seen from them this year and how unimpressed I was. I say this is winnable on Senior Day at the Beav, as long as the beav isnt empty on Thanksgiving weekend.
So my worst prediction is 3-3, with 4-2 very possible.
Indiana scored 49 on them. I'll say it again...........INDIANA SCORED 49 ON THEM!
It deserves shouting, it's that incredible.
Post in locker room. Use as motivation for players. PSU has a shot in every game, depends on how they play.
4-2 is reasonable and 5-1 would be phenomenal.
I trust Phil Steele more than anyone out there. I hope he is wrong, but PSU could drop 4 or could just as easy win 4 as NOBODY in the Big Ten is unbeatable. I just hope the chip on our kids shoulders carries them to at least 4 more wins.
"One man didn't build this program and one man sure as hell cannot tear it down."
I dont think it is anything personal. I think after the sanctions, everyone just assumed we would have a mass exodus of talent, and be a 3-4 win team at best. Losing to Ohio and Virginia is probably hard for some people to get past, and may lead to an opinion that wins against NW and Illinois were over-valued.
If someone predicted that we would stink, they need to find a way to reconcile our 4-2 start with their prediction, so the excuses come out that we still dont have any quality wins. Our second half is definitely harder. but 2-4? we'll see...I dont think so.
Does anyone think we have come close to playing our best game yet? We have left a ton of points on the board, defense is starting to click, and the special teams are just special. I think Phil needs to face the facts that the Big10 just sucks this year, and that this "mediocre" team from PA is going to remain very competitive.
yeah im kinda thinking that phil steele is an asshat
...and Ohio is now a 7-0 team.
We should have won that game, but I'm very impressed with what Frank Solich has done there.
I'm not bashing Phil Steele by posting this. I disagree with his assessment, and I can see it going both ways, depending on the emotion and how the kids respond to the undoubtedly more difficult schedule. But we will be in every. single. game. the rest of this year. I just don't see 6-6.
I just don't see how Iowa is so much more of a challenge than NW....Iowa's best win is against a reeling MSU squad that's biggest win was against Boise st. Then you have Nebraska with its big win at home against wisconsin. Their other opponents are pathetic. So how about wisky? Biggest win....uh Purdue. So of Iowa, Nebraska, Wisky...you really have no better wins than our win against NW, maybe even Temple.
So while i respect Phil's opinion..he's a journalist...and journalists are supposed to do what I just did if they want any credability. Sure, I may be biased...our schedule doesnt have any bigtime wins on it...but neither does ANY of the teams I mentioned...so where's the logic? Fact is, there is no way to determine whether NW is a better/worse win than michigan st, wisky, nebraska because none of these teams have played head to head yet.
