Exactly how we feel.... sad isn't it.
"In the deed, the glory"
What made the NU/OU rivalry so exciting wasn't just the fact that it had national title implications every year, but it was a respect thing between fanbases. We (NU) respected the hell out of OU, even if we didn't like Switzer and other things the respect was always there. I believe that went for OU fans towards NU as well.
Comparing that rivalry to games against Colorado/Mizzery/purple kitties isn't truely possible as there was ZERO repect from either side in those games. Years and Years of fighting lead up to how bad those ended up. I believe a lot of it had to do with NU's dominance on the BIG8 after with OU Switzer era. Easy to hate the team that wins every year. (i.e. tOSU)
It's funny how things turn out with coaching hires.
Many on the board (myself included) were extremely disappointed with the hire of O'Brien. We had stars in our eyes and fell in love with all the big names being thrown around. After having BOB on campus, I wouldn't want anybody else here for the sanctions other than Saban or Stoops (total homer pick, I know).
At least Pelini has done a good job of putting some talented DLs in great positions to succeed. However if there isn't a truly dominating DL, that defensive system gets picked apart. Similar to PSU's defense under Tom Bradley. Luckily both of our programs have been good enough over the years to be able to recruit and produce some superhuman DL, but it asks a whole lot of a DL.
Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS
Yes, we usually always give a ovation to the opposing teams win or lose... The fact that the BC era really tarnished NU's relevance is a sad misfortune. BC didn't do it to himself he hitched his wagon to a friend and that created the snowball effect (that wagon was Kevin Cosgrove). Had he changed the DC he would probably still be in Lincoln.
If you really wanna look into the "what could have been" glass...
If BC would have retained Bo Pelini as his DC and allowed Pelini to just coach and not worry about recruiting and BC to coach the offense. That could have been a deadly combination that more than likely would not have lasted long as someone would have come calling for Bo.

That's exactly how I felt about the rivalry.
I'm still pretty young, but I really enjoyed playing Nebraska every other year and in the Big 12 Championship game. I have always rooted for Nebraska outside of the OU and now PSU games. One of my least favorite things about CFB nowadays is that the OU-Nebraska rivalry isn't on the schedule every year. One of the best rivalries in CFB due to the quality of football and the respect between the fanbases.
Exactly. It gets lonely at the top. I'm sure whenever the ship gets righted after the sanctions and PSU gets back, the hate will pick up for us as well.
I've noticed the NU-PSU series is much more heated though. Pretty interesting calling games with a Husker die-hard this summer.
He also had Steve Pederson (sp?) for an AD, and for whatever reason losing seems to follow that guy.
Maybe I am just late to the party, who are you calling games with?
A tiny independent league team from my hometown. The guy was from Omaha.
He is a huge Husker fan, and we went back and forth most of the summer.
I think the collective sigh coming from PS.247sports was WTF? Who the heck is Bill O'Brien and what business does he have in succeeding JoePA?!?!
Well 3/4 into the 2012 season BO'B and his staff have guided this team to a 6-3 record. This in the face of Nostrdamas' (new-era's) prediction that we would go 2-10!
Gotta love it!
p.s. ....looking forward to the show-down in Lincoln, NE on Saturday.
October 12, 2013. PSU 43 - UM 40 (4 OT). Unfortunately this fan wasn't around long enough to see it!
How does everyone feel about the match up?
It's already been pointed out that our defense plays well against Pro-Style. What do you think of your offense against our defense?
Also interested to hear what your guys' perception of our offense is. I know PSU has a top-15 scoring defense. How do you feel about Penn State's ability to shut the Huskers' offense down?
Like Josh, I'm here for discussion. Looking forward to next weekend!
Its obvious IMO, you go stop the run and make Martinez throw. Easier said than done. He, Martinez has major decision problems IMO when he has to put it in the air. It he is off and running like he did with Sparty, then our offense will have to score a ton of points.
Agreed, the best defense against Nebraska is to take away Taylors legs. The only issue there is when he does throw you have to back off and cover. Hopefully resulting in poor reads and INTS, but as that happens that opens up the run again. Also Taylor isn't the only threat from Nebraska... Ameer Abdullah is just as dangerous in his own right and Taylor can easily pass the buck to AA to make waves.
That in a nut shell is why our offense is ranked #1, you pick your poison. Nebraska is going to get its yards, you just have to take advantage of our miscues and not allow us to score on big plays. Force long drives and the odds go up in your favor.
NU has a well rounded offense and our defense is just as nice. Should be a great game I just hope walk-on Moxie doesn't have a sighting in Lincoln!

I called them Black Skirts not shirts!
PSU had one of the best college football offenses ever that year. Ever.
Every starter from that offense, and several back ups, played in the NFL.
3 of the top 10 NFL draft choices that year played on the PSU offense.
PSU beat #22 ranked tOSU 63-14.
Yeah, PSU was jobbed. They were the best team in the land that year. They played against Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and blew them out. Thye played who they were asked to play.
To me, this is OSU all over again, except on the road. You have a predominant running offense (Martinez and Abdullah), like Miller and Hyde. Martinez is a much better passer than is Miller. It's not close. Both teams are prone to coughing up the ball, Nebraska and OSU. It's trying to force turnovers ... use ball control offense to keep Martinez and crew on the sidelines. This is where we might miss Carter if he doesn't play. I can see a heavy dose of Zwinak and the TEs. Nebraska's defense has holes, just like OSU's did. We will see if BOB learned something from his play calling debacle two weeks ago.
I think you are sadly mistaken with your first comment. People acknowledge that offense as one of the best there ever was.
Nebraska moved ahead of PSU because Joe had his third string in against Indiana and the Hoosiers scored two late TDs to make it somewhat close. Sad thing is/was, voters just looked at the score and didn't take in account that major factor.
Not to be an ass, but I know all about the hard time for CU fans because I went to school in Colorado. I do remember that chant that gave me pause to question Nebraska fans - "Sal is dead, go Big Red." Nebraska fans are a very classy bunch, but I lost alot of respect for them that day.
Wow..... come on now.
Don't forget Kool Aid was invented in Nebraska.
I appologize as I have never heard anything about the 94 PSU team as a better team than Nebraska.
Only argument I have is we played the #1 team at home in the Orange bowl. We won, which gave us the title.
I'll be honest, I don't know much about Nebraska as I haven't been able to watch any of their games.
I like our offense as long as they minimize mistakes. Frankly, the only teams that have stopped our offense, IMO, are 1) OSU and 2) ourselves. Our offense has a penchant for making mistakes and killing their own drives with drops, poor throws, etc. So far they've done pretty well on the road. We'll just have to see what happens.

Penn State has struggled stopping the read option. Against OSU O'Brien thought the way to counter that was to run the ball, even though OSU struggled defending the pass. We became too predictable on offense and couldn't sustain drives and the defense wore out in the second half. I think Nebraska will move the ball. We just need to win the turnover battle and stick to what we do best on offense. It'll be a tough game for us to win, but we have a chance.

Rightfully so.... I think every program has things we don't like to address or talk about, this being one for Nebraska.
