Schools can and should take reasonable precautions, but there isn't much a school can do if you have two heavily armed men who decide to storm it. The only other alternative is to make schools like prisons - fences, armed guards, etc. I hope we never have to go there.
Very sad day. Lets try to think of the poor kids and their families and limit the hate and finger-pointing -- at least for today -- to those who committed this unthinkable crime.
if these kindergarten shootings is what humanity has come to, maybe we are better off with the world ending next week.
"Who's Dan Morgan?"
The fact is certain communities, like this one, don't consider themselves at-risk for violence. The problem is that after this, and last year in Chardon (about 30 min. away from where I teach) and back to Columbine, violence can occur anywhere, regardless of socioeconomics.

A guy in China just killed over 20 people in a school with a knife.
People kill people.
I'd really rather people reform school safety standards than gun control here.
Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS
my wife and I just attended a Christmas show put on by my sons kindergarten class yesterday. many of the kids in his class and their parents we know through preschool or form me coaching them in T ball. I can only imagine emotions these families must be going through. I will definitely be giving them a little bit longer hug when I pick them up from school today. my thoughts and prayers go out to all the families involved.
Yep. Sick people will find a way. Problem goes a lot deeper than access to a gun.
I'd rather reform PEOPLE.
Bottom line and as sickening as this may sound, its no different than some wacko putting a bomb on a plane. You can put every safety measure in place to avoid plane bombings or, in this case, school shootings. However, if someone wants to get that bomb on a plane or a gun/knife into a school regardless of metal detectors or whatever you have installed badly enough, they can do it. You just hinder their ability to get it done quicker.
I have a rough time processing things like this every time they happen.

hmmm, anyone bringing up gun control rants at a time like this has major issues as well. You would think that a school being a gun free zone would stop him, since it's illegal and all.
Of course it does, but guns are the most accessible and effective means of mass murder. This is beyond dispute. In absence of reforming social norms and institutions (which is absurdly complicated and takes generations), the most immediate thing you can do is reduce the capacity of people to act violently.
People who don't understand the logic of the gun control crowd are just being dense. It is perfectly rational and would be highly effective. I understand people want guns, but downplaying the argument for gun control just makes people seem foolish. If you want guns, fine, there are constitutional arguments to be made to that end. Working to undermine the logic of the opposition is weak and pointless.

This happened about 40 min from where I live. I went on my phone, and saw Breaking New - CT elementary school shooting, and literally froze. I have 2 kids 6 and 9 in elementary school up here in CT, and I was afraid to even open the link. I have been watching the news for the last 3 hours in tears.
My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

Okay, I'll bite. Exactly how do you reform school standards to protect against armed gunmen? Its easy for you to say, but how exactly would you accomplish it? Bulletproof doors and windows? Metal doors and windowless classrooms? Because unless that is the solution, all the locks and "access" rules won't stop what happened today.
Correct, you can't prevent every wackadoodle from carrying out their mission of destruction...but we sure can slow it down and make it more difficult. There is no logical rationale to support the production and sales of assault weapons, with the exception of the military - IMO. I haven't heard one convincing argument for these weapons. Come on. If we can't at least get these weapons off the streets and out of the hands of sicko's, we are going to see more of these tragic situations. We make it WAY too easy.
I present your stupid ass gun control jibberish with......
Give them a huge hug when they get home buddy. Same goes to everyone. Not a time for gun control talk, recruiting talk, or whatever. Just be thankful that the people that you love and started the day with.....are still with you. It can change in the blink of an eye.
That is my name on their tops and no one can tell me any different!!!!
OR even better.....
Then maybe we should make them illegal and take them off the streets like meth and heroin.

Deepest sympathies go out to the victims and their families. Sad day for America.
No one wants to make guns illegal, just control them. The same thing they do in Europe where gun violence is almost non-existent and democracy exists and they aren't lorded over by a totalitarian, violent dictator.
Some of you are utterly unbelievable sometimes.
local news: kid from jersey kills his dad this morning...drives to ct where his mom is a teacher in the sandy hook school....he then kills her and many others. Guess that answers how he got in (son of teacher)
I see what you did there.
I personally have a handgun to protect my home. It's not practical to ban guns altogether. But is it too much to ask to ban assault rifles? There needs to be a practical limit to the firepower a common citizen can bring to bear. And concealed carry laws like the one that just passed the Michigan House and Senate allowing concealed carry in schools need to go as well.
At some point America needs to ask itself if it's OK with massacres like this one. If the answer is no, it's time to take action as a nation to prevent them from happening. Some type of gun control needs to be on the table along with school safety measures.
