I doubt he goes first - to many teams just don't get it - He should though - Might not be a Crosby but he reminds me of Weber - best D-man in the game IMO. Hard, can score and no real weakness to his game. For a young dman that is rare.
Alex Galchenyuk, who was on this team, went 3rd overall. 8 pts in 7 games, but I was underwhelmed by his play to say the least. Did nothing against the good teams. I don't think he was trusted by the coaching staff in any key moments either.
LaFontaine and Roenick were elite back in their day. Parise was pretty damn good in the last Olympics.
Loads of defensemen, we are just going to have to hope some of our projected 2nd line forwards become 1st line forwards. USA is generating better depth even if there is no Crosby. The increased numbers, increase the chances one or more become elite.
Size difference is only half of it. You reach bantam and you start dealing with big strength differences as well due to physical maturity. No amount of practice time will ever compare to actual in-game experience, and I don't think learning how to take a hit for the first time in a real game should be against kids who are practically grown men.
Totally agree with you on this. Nathan McKinnon is darn good and could be a franchise type forward. That said, I believe a rebuild of a franchise, unless a Crosby, or a Malkin or an Ovechkin is out there for the taking, should be the stud blueliner, like Jones. McKinnon isn't any of those. Guys like Jones are harder to find. To this day I think Edmonton f'ed up last year with the pick of Yakupov. They have enough young forwards on that roster - Eberle, Hall, RNH (not putting Gagner since he shot his load in three game stretch) to have a nice start. They lack defense. Klefblom is a solid prospect... Ryan Murray would have been the smart pick. It all depends on who gets that first overall pick. Then again, if its Cbus - it could use both. Edmonton would take Jones.
Oh man LaFontaine was awesome. He and Mogilny were fun to watch back on that Sabres team back in the day.
Most people project Jones to go #2 - but he is a defenseman.
Amonte, Modano, Hull (born in Canada but played on Team USA) were dominate players as well. There are definitely some current U.S. born players who can put up some points, but its alarming that only 2 of the top 30 scorers in the league were born in the U.S.
USA Hockey has come a long way. As POV pointed out, there are a ton of U.S. born forwards/centers who are being drafted in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds. But its still a long way to go until they reach the likes of Team Canada.
Crosby comes along every 10 years. Remember when Alex Daigle was supposed to be the next coming?
The US hasn't had a guy to match a Crosby, or Gretzky, or Mario and probably never will, but have had a number of solid players with great resumes. Modano, Roenick, Joey Mullen, Housley on D, Tkachuk, Weight, Leetch, Patty Laf, Chelios ... not Canada, but decent collection.
There is a new wave of Americans coming that could supplant some of those guys. Alot of this is because of the USNTDP. Just look at the numbers of those kids drafted in the last four years. Pretty amazing.

I wouldn't bet on Edmonton taking Jones....there is a reason they have had high draft picks for the last 10yrs... lol.
I just got home from watching the replay of the game with the Gibson family and a few friends at our local church hall. What a night. Very emotional sitting with John's mom and fortunate to toast their son at the end.
They have sacrificed a lot and are so proud of his accomplishments. Even more proud of how he handles himself and how humble he is. Go John and team USA!
And if Pittsburgh had the top pick, Jones would be chosen. God knows, with Shero's track record at stockpiling blueliners - Morrow, Harrington, Pouliot, Matta ...
The NHL and Union have reached a deal - just need the players and all 30 owners to sign. Looks like there will be a shortened season.
If this agreement was to save the season only and not iron out everything so we don't have to go through this in five or six years, I don't like it. I'd rather lose the season and get everything taken care of now, then have some half assed deal just to save the year only to have a strike or lockout in 2018 or 2019.
10 yr deal with option to opt out in 8 by both sides. Sounds like some safeguards to prevent owners from screwing themselves and a lower cap starting next year. The problem is the owners keep finding ways to get around the deals they sign to get the free agents they want, driving up costs, players then dont want to give back the gains the make through the owners own stupidity even though it is killing the game......
