He didn't want to play nose tackle, and bought into the USC hype train.
People always accused the Broncos under Shannahan of playing dirty on the OLine, did they? Dunno if you watched those Bronco teams a lot.

Before my time, really. They cut a lot more, I remember that, but I'd have to go a little further back and rewatch. I remember those claims too.
...yeah, what MBG said. Not interested in taking on 2 blockers to let others rush the passer. It is a loss but what can you do?? Back to the OP for a second...It is my opinion (though different from some of my duck brethren) that Darron Thomas was worried about losing his position as starting QB. He had reached the pinnacle of his time at Oregon...NC appearance, Rose Bowl victory. It would have been hard to eclipse. Also, he had been exposed in regards to not being able to run the full gamet of read option plays that CK prefers to employ. In fact, when DT was injured the fans and coaches were reminded exactly how a true read option QB could change a game. See Bennett against ASU, Colorado, and WSU. Lastly, and probably most impactful, was DThomas' mom back in Houston. She worked very hard (3 jobs) i believe to help provide for him. He had already received his degree and I feel he started to put pressure on himself to start providing for her. It all backfired for sure, but it may have been a risk either way. Imagine what would happen to Darron if he had returned to Oregon only to lose his starting job. Maybe not the most likely scenario, but that would have absolutely tanked his NFL prospects.
Any of y'all attend the 1995 Rose Bowl? My first bowl game as a Duck my sophomore year. Damn you Kijana and Kerry!!
Thomas said it was because Barkley stayed. He didn't want to spend all year being overshadowed by Barkley. He basically said if Barkley had left he would still be at Oregon. He also thought he compared better to other QB's being drafted as opposed to the guys who could come out next year.
There is always talk that every position is up for grabs at every practice but there's no evidence that Thomas would have lost his job. I just can't see kelly pulling Thomas his senior to replace him with an untested. R-Fr. There's little doubt as a QB Mariota has a better skill set but, Thomas had excellent leadership skills and was calm and cool in pressure situations. Without some sort of major failure I think pulling a guy with Thomas' record would have been slim .
As far as Washington fans are concerned, wander over to Dawgman sometime. Most of the posts about the DUcks. They live for Duck rumors and the owner of the board helps to start one just about weekly.

Big fan of cut blocks. Wish our lines did it more.
Please beat USC this year and derail that hype train.
I don't love it right at the line with what we are looking to do with that prostyle O. Now in space, absolutely. And I think we will see a lot more of it there.
You played? Thats cool if you did.
I will be rooting for you guys to thump USC twice this year.

Oh $h!t no....sorry if I gave that impression. My freshman year as a student we went 5-6...no bowl game. Hence sophomore year was first bowl game while I attended. I played tennis at Oregon. Not football.
You mean on film? Because the only time anyone has seen Mariota play in college is at the spring game, and was nearly perfect with his only real mistake being Ekpre-Olomu's interception.

All-seeing instrument. Supreme perception. Omnifocal accumulator... Its gaze upon the blind. Information divinity by man designed.
I was thinking of the other dude, Bennett, who looked terrible.
Bennett made mistakes but he also broke off a couple runs that were stopped because of a finger touch when in reality at least one of those would've gone to the house. Plus he didn't have DAT, and Barner only was in for two plays.
Mariota still had a far better game, but on closer glance the deck was a little stacked in his favor.
Didn't he also throw multiple INTs? Your offense is so much better when the QB is a true dual threat.
