per agent and ESPN
"A bowl game ain't nothing but a vacation." - Gerald Hodges
What? You mean Bob L (aka 247 Rumors on the Rumors Board) "Informed sources" were not right that he was going to Tenn, Auburn, Browns, Panthers, Jaguars, etc?
"Whoever’s trying to kill me isn’t getting the job done. But one day, I’m going to punch that f___r in the face."
Good story. Can't wait to read about who he is going to see!
Only bad news...the agent is adamant about no extended buyout. So he has 4 years left...$9.2 million buyout this yr, then declining every yr after that until end of 2016. PSU is likely going to need to drastically restructure his deal toward the end of sanction period, if earned.

They need to give him more $ now.
Of course his agent is going to say that, that's his job. And PSU is going to say the buyout was extended by the rider.
I think they can and will at least try to do so.
Except this: "O'Brien also lost 15 scholarship athletes per year for the next four years as a penalty, something Linta said he thought was unfair."
We lost 10 scholarship athletes per year (which I always thought was unfair for a variety of reasons, one of them being what Linta said about 10 less kids across the country will get a scholarship to get an education at one of the top public universities in the country).
Anyways, in the end, this should help with recruiting a little bit. The interest for O'Brien from others universities and the NFL should help for any kid that wants to learn more about OB.
Anybody have a video of O'Brien chanting "We are" to the crowd at the end of the game?
No but I was there and witnessed in person.
"I like your head, it's a good look." - James Franklin, to a bald reporter asking a question.
They do need to restructure his contract so he has the opportunity to be financially rewarded as other top coaches in the conference. Right now I don't believe his contract is as favorable as it could be.
They should give him a nice Christmas bonus on top of the $100k they should give him for what would've been a bowl trip.
THE key phrase there was: "Joe Linta, who represents O'Brien, told ESPN that recent talk about how much his client would have to pay in order to buy out the remaining eight years of his contract at Penn State are "irrelevant."
Talk about buying out his contract is IRRELEVANT.
It's irrelevant now. In 2-3 years, especially if BOB manages to keep us on track during sanctions, it could be. That would be the point when we'd need to reconfigure the deal. The rider is what is irrelevant if the buyout is not extended with it. BOB is essentially still on a 5 yr deal from PSUs perspective. BOB is the only one who potentially gained security in this manner. His agent was pretty savvy.
He's been a HC for 12 games and won 8 this year with JoePa's recruits. I'd like to see how things shape up the next year or so, before jumping on this bandwagon "now".
That said, he got the B1G COTY and deservedly so. He's built a great staff and had an uncanny success with his offensive schemes, which had to be learned in mere months by this O.
We've got the BEST S&C coach in CFB. The sky is the limit with this staff in tact over the next 4 years.
But more $$ right "now"? IMO, not quite there yet.
October 12, 2013. PSU 43 - UM 40 (4 OT). Unfortunately this fan wasn't around long enough to see it!
They owe him the $100k bonus for making a bowl game...plus a little extra.
or Joyner is simply not a qualified AD
Whatever is in the current contract is in the current contract, period. I just think it's premature to open up the contract for renegotiation "now". That's all.
Not to be a naysayer, but it could also be "irrelevant" b/c it wouldn't be BOB, but the team that wants him, who would be buying out the contract.
"You have to perform at a consistently higher level than others. That's the mark of a true professional." JVP
IMO, OB isn't a lifer. He's an NFL guy at heart and when they come calling down the road he'll be off. I think he does truly love Penn State at this point and isn't going to bail on them. He'll see this thing through and then chase his dream of being a top NFL coach.
It's going to be tough as a PSU fan to get used to coaching turnover. We've been unrealistically spoiled for most of our lives.
I think he will end up in the NFL.
That said..I think the signs point to him liking the college game more than the pros. He was a college coach for a while, only a pro coach for three years before turning down opportunities to be an NFL HC to come back to be a college HC.
IMO, the money will be too much at some point. But I've always thought his actions pointed to being a college guy at heart, not an NFL guy.
Joepa's agent always was trumping for more bowl bonus money and extensions, too. Errr, nevermind.
Only way I will not have anything but utter admiration for BOB is if he leaves this year. He leaves this year, MASS defections and we essentially become Colorado, if we can even field a team at all. If he stays for the next lets say 2 years, the free transfer penalty passes, we're 3/4ths of the way through the bowl santions, recruiting is already looking like it will be back to normal sooner than later (2015 imo and we're recruiting near 100% if we continue to have decent seasons), and we're halfway through the scholarship reductions....He gets us 2 more years of continued success similar to this year and gets us through the majority of the sanctions, I will love him forever and he will have earned every right to go to the next level at the NFL if thats his dream. By that point, we will have become an attractive option again to any coach in the country and will always have the money to spend. He get's us two more years and keeps us on the track we're on during those next 2 seasons, we will be ready to come firing out of the sanctions imo.
