Do people in those areas really give a shit about UMD? Maybe men's hoops. UMD football fans are Pitt fans dressed in red empty chair seats. As far as improvement to the BIG absent maybe some tubes, it helps non revenue sports and women's hoops. Not the kind of splash you want. Hell, Rutgers makes more sense than does UMD.
The B1G deal, I believe, is that the TVs in the home states get the BTN. I know that's the way it is out this way, at least as brokered with cable. BTN is also a local sports channel for Dish Network, not positive on Direct TV.
I agree that is the most interesting point. I like VT for the East coast presence but KU would bolster the BB status.
I believe BTN is standard on all Directv packages other than the basic pack...I've always had it, but I don't subscribe to the basic so I don't know if it's included on that one.
Any school added has to make sense and pass criteria on the academic side. That takes time. This is out of the blue. Can't happen in a week or two. Even if entrance isn't til 2014. Could be just a feeler in the event of a vote to expel someone. How ironic would that be!!!!
If the B1G expands it will either be eastward or towards the south. No remaining program in the midwest moves the needle in terms of viewership and all the TV sets are in states like NJ, MD, VA, and NC. If the B1G expands that's where it will be.
Dominate The State
Doesn't PSu already get us most MD. Do they really tip the scale?
You honestly think Delany doesn't have breakdowns of every potential school and what they would do for the B1G? He probably already knows which schools would say yes.

I work with a few UMD grads who are big football fans in general down here in Bethesda. They couldn't care less about Maryland football. Only UMD sport they remotely care about is basketball.
They'll fit in well with Indiana...
From the Maryland site ... Their fans are about 50/50 on the idea. Some hate it because they love basketball and expect football to be just as terrible as it is now. They compared PSU to nc state, and compared themselves to pursue or northwestern.
The ones that like the idea like money and fear if maryland doesnt make the jump sone other team will be in line to take their place.
Some are mentioning Rutgers as another team getting in as well as a complete package.
I realize the New York market is huge, but what about the Baltimore/DC market? Is that a big media market?
There was enough smoke for the staff to make a post, I imagine something is being seriously tabled.
If winning was easy even losers would do it.
I work with a few Maryland fans and that's basically their feeling as well.
That area loves the Ravens, Terps bball, and after this year realized they can cheer for the O's for longer than a month.
I think Maryland and Purdue are very comparable in many ways. Purdue is a basketball school that has had some moments in football. I don't get the NC State comparison for PSU. I see PSU more of a VPI in that league as far as a football dominated school that every 10 years might have something on the hardwood. The fan base is rabid about football, basketball not so much. Also, it gets more pub than its in state rivals.
Where about in Bethesda are you? My wife and I work at NIH.
I live in Silver Spring, but I work at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Carderock just off Clara Barton Pkwy.
I cannot see the Big making this announcement and over shadow THE GAME .. The crown jewel of the Big Ten.
That just not their way
Here in Baltimore, the following for the football team is surprisingly bigger than the attendance at home games would make it seem.
It's definitely second fiddle to the basketball team by a large margin though, and that is way behind Ravens football.
Someone posted on The Blue Board that UMD would become the fourth best hoops program in the league. My response, you are sixth at best behind OSU, MSU, Michigan, Wisky and Indiana. He said UMD is ALOT better than Michigan and Wisky. Hell, Purdue is better despite the rough start this year. UMD is more like Illinois.
Agree...funny thing on UMD board is they say they want to stay in the better BBall league and the BIG isn't a BBall conference. I mentioned they may want to look at the Top 10 as it is loaded with BIG teams.
