Im sure most of us don't care, but just thought I'd pass along some info I gathered. I spoke to a friend who knows the Fortt family last night and asked him if he knew exactly why Khairi transferred. He told me it was pretty much due to playing time. The Fortt family thought Khairi was the best LB on the team and wasn't happy he wasn't starting. So when the opportunity opened up to transfer they decided to go somewhere he would play.
I don't even know if he was the 4th best LB on the team.
Appreciate the info.
I just wonder if it's short sighted. Admittedly, I dont know much about Cal's LBers but I can't imagine their coach can even compare to Vandy in the slightest. With Vandy coaching him (and his success of putting quality players in the NFL), and the starting roll all of next year I think they jumped the gun.
He probably will get more playing time at Cal.
If he isn't the starter with two different coaching staffs, wouldn't the family get the hint? He is NOT better than hodges mauti or carson.
I wonder how much of it has to do with Lavar being his ear. He probably got a pretty big ego from hearing him and that #11 thing. Fortt always seemed a little different to me. Even watching the Paterno ceremony....he looked like he didn't even care to be there and was being forced to clap at times.
I know....sour grapes....
Thanks for the info, mzizzle. Kinda figured all along he wasn't happy with his PT. I don't agree with the family thinking he was the best LB on our team but whatever. At most, I would've pegged him as the 3rd best LB behind Mauti and Hodges of course but he's probably around the 4/5 best LB we had. I'm sorry Khairi and his family felt that way. He is extremely talented and will probably thrive at Cal but clearly Vandy didn't view him as our top LB. I'll trust Vandy's opinion on LB's any day. Good luck to him at Cal.

He was definitely one of our best athletes, thats for sure. I believe he is our second biggest loss behind Fera.
Lavar was brought up when I spoke to my friend
I tend to agree with this. Looking at his twitter page, it seems like he really wanted out or at least didn't want to be there. Even poked fun of CJ Olaniyan for staying.
^^^ Agree with rummel ^^^
He was probably neck-and-neck with Carson in the middle, but easily has the potential to better. I thought we saw great strides/improvements in him last year.
That's sad. I didn't see him do that. I probably unfollowed him on twitter by then.
He couldn't stay healthy. You aren't the best LB if you can't even practice.
In addition to lack of playing time, he never liked Vanderlinden and/or his coaching style. He even looked in to transferring last year, before all this went down.
Khairi Fortt @KForttress11
@cjolaniyan86 your just depressed cause brahs made moves
this was in a conversation with him, Bolden, and CJ
Cal has done a really good job of turning out mid-round talent at LB spot over the last few years (not sure if its the same position coach). However, I would be more concerned that Tedford makes it beyond this season. He seems to be always on the hot-seat.
Playing time IMO is a valid reason to leave. If he thought he was better, that is his opinion and I'm sure he believes that. Maybe he was more athletic than someone ahead of him, but wasn't a better LB. I don't mind a kid bailing for PT as they have 4 years to make their mark. A starter bailing on this team kind of rubs me the wrong way, but it's their life. I won't root for the starters who left. I'll root for the guys that filled their shoes.

That's a punk move.
Best LB on what team?

After losing Williams, Reeves, Redd, and Fortt im completely fine with not recruiting kids from NE anymore. No offense to Kiley.
I just checked all the Cal players currently on NFL rosters and only noticed 1 LB of theirs that is really doing anything in the NFL(Desmond Bishop for the Packers). I think lowly Pitt was had more starting LBs in the NFL in recent years than Cal has.
It certainly is.
If the kid thinks he's be best, that's fine... if he proved it on the field, he would be starting. Carson is in the same class as him, and he is still out there. Clearly, the staff thought that a lineup of Mauti-Carson-Hodges was better than Fortt-Mauti-Hodges. It's laughable to take what we have seen from him so far and say that he is better than Hodges or Mauti. At best, he was the third best guy, but as I said before, he may not have even been the 4th best (as Hull has gotten some really good reviews this year). The kid has a ton of potential, but it has only been half realized.
Kendricks will get a ton of pt in Philly this year.

You can recruit them, but no more package/buddy deals as one usually thinks for the other apparently.
