I for one am pumped about this opportunity for Coach Butler! He has my support! I think we all need to realize that we are now in modern day college football where coaches leave at times. We are lucky to have a great staff from top to bottom.
John is young and passionate about football and about PSU. Wasn't he and Craig Fitz that were calling other coaches telling them to stay away from PSU players when the sanctions came down??
Never heard the Butler/Fitz story give us some background. Like it!
I am certain I heard it on a radio show that Fitz and Butler were on. The host was asking them about making phone calls to other schools coaches telling them to back off. They were talking about when they would find out a player was contacted that they would then call the coaches back at tell them to quit it. They also listened to voice mails from other schools coaches to our players. They seemed to get a kick out of it.
It was pretty funny. I just can't remember what radio show it was on, it was before the season started.
Porter, you're likely referring to the Goon Show. I dont remember the exact context, but I recall them both being on and discussing something about it.
Was this the story about Steve Spurrier?
Something about how Spurrier said he wouldn't recruit any PSU players but they heard Spurrier leave a voicemail to one of our players trying to get him to SC?

That would be a violation of the consent decree FWIW.
Which part would be a violation?
I think it may have indeed been the Goon Show.
The part that says that Penn State cannot interfere with possible transfers in any way. Here is an excerpt from the NCAA:
"Permission-to-contact rules are suspended. Penn State cannot restrict in any way a student-athlete from pursuing a possible transfer. Student-athletes must simply inform Penn State of their interest in discussing transfer options with other schools. Before communicating with student-athletes, interested schools also must inform Penn State of their intention to open discussions with the student-athlete."
Penn State football student-athletes allowed easier transfers

Screw the NCAA
WE ARE! And we will always be...
Certainly up to interpretation, but telling the coaches to shove it doesn't prevent the student-athlete from pursuing anything if they want to.
That is def open to interpretation. In my view restricting someone from transferring would fall more on administrative issues and PSU making it more difficult for a transfer on the academic side of things.
The whole consent decree is a violation, so i love the fact Fitz and Butler did this. We are just supposed to let people poach out kids without putting up some type of fight?
I definitely agree with the OP.
I remember some folks stating that Butler could be a DC somewhere, if not here within time. Well, that time has come now! I'm really anxious to see how he does and what he can do schematically. I think given the lack of depth we had in our secondary, he seemed to get the most out of those guys all season long! Time to step it up and start gameplanning for him now. I think Butler will surprise some folks. I love his energy and passion!

Yeah, but we all know who the judge is on that interpretation...
"Whoever’s trying to kill me isn’t getting the job done. But one day, I’m going to punch that f___r in the face."
Butler and Fitz were on the Goon Show together shortly after the sanctions came down. They were very much concerned about losing players but I don't remember them saying anything about telling other coaches to stay away.
You can listen to the show here for yourself in case I'm wrong.
Fitz and Butler went on to discuss what the team and coaching staff are up against in trying to keep players. There are college coaches actively recruiting on PSUs campus ...
