I think this is a guy Bill O'Brien shoul target for DB's coach. He's obviously experienced as a DB's coach having coach DB's 3 seasons at Pitt, 2 at Rutgers and 1 in the NFL as an assistant DB coach. I just read that Tampa has asked their DB coach to move on and is looking to bring someone else in. If they don't give the job to Hafley (which it looks like they won't) and he stays assistant DB coach I wonder if he'd be interested. The guy has MAJOR recruiting connections in Jersey and is just a flat out good recruiter. He'd be a terrific asset on this staff. BOB spending some time in North Jersey made my think about Hafley again. There's a lot of talent in that area. I hope he's the guy and is just waiting around to see what Schiano does with the vacant DB coaching position.
from what i know from where he coached is that the is one heck of a recruiter in Jersey....but is a horrible DB coach. Atleast that's what my Pitt friend said - but in his regard i heard that from other places he coached too.
From what I've seen, Hafley is a terrific recruiter. But a pretty poor DB coach. If we hired him, I'd be torn. Butler's a DB coach so he can always help coach these kids up. But I wouldn't want to put more on his plate as first time DC.
JMO, but I think BOB will do what he did with all the positions - hire guys who work hard, are good recruiters as well as good teachers.
He wouldn't be a bad guy to measure interest. He was a pretty darn good recruiter for Rutgers IIRC
He is an absolutely dreadful coach, but he is a top shelf recruiter in the NE, particularly NJ. I would love it for selfish reasons as the Rutgers board would meltdown. Doubt it happens though.
Would be great to add another dynamite recruiter especially with the sanctions, but it also is important to have a good coach too since we need to develop some not so highly rated kids. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it.
I'll put infinity internet dollars up that says this does not happen... doesn't fit BOB's M-O. He wants solid coaches that can recruit. You don't need an ace recruiter when the HC can recruit well and if all the staff members recruit well. This isn't PSU of old where 4 guys on staff recruited. Then you would need the "ace". With limitations give me the guy that can coach and maximize talent and find it where others don't see it.
So...how do we have any evidence that he's a bad DB coach? I'm not saying he's not, but how does one determine whether a coach is good after only 2 years spent at Rutgers and 3 at Pitt. He wasn't eactly working with top end talent at Pitt or Rutgers. It's nearly impossible to determine the impact (positive or negative) a defensive scheme or coordinator has had on the secondary. Additionally, he's coming off a year coaching in the NFL. I'd imagine there could be growth. It just seems kind of comical to call a guy that coached DB's dreadful after two years at Rutgers. Additionally, at PSU whoever takes over will only be responsible for either safeties OR corners...not both.
I just want to be clear I know little about the guy but I'd have a hard time believing Schiano choose him to come to Tampa with him if he sucked as a coach and could only recruit (which he won't do in the NFL obviously). But...maybe Schiano just wanted guys that he thought couldn't coach. I'll just trust the idiots on the Rutgers board.
Good post. Butler in an interview said he will still have a hand wit the DB's at either corner or safety but he made no mention of special teams. I dont think OB hires a coach just for safeties so to speak. I bet it will be a safety/special team combo hire. Without checking his resume does he have any experience coaching Spec. Teams?
so he has 1 year of nfl experience?
