How's it going guys, I come in peace.
I am flying out to visit a client in Saint Mary's, PA in January. I (unintentionally...) am flying out to Pittsburgh 1-16-12 and am going to make the drive to State College for the MSU/PSU basketball game.
I got a pretty decent deal on a ticket for $23 in section 102, so all set there, but I was hoping to pick up a few tips on where to eat/where to stay in the city. No budget restrictions really, and any tips would be useful.
Also little things such as parking etc, any tips would be great. Really appreciate it!
Sidenote: Very happy to see you guys turn your season around in football after a brutal start. McGloin played well and O'Brien did a fantastic job. Stay positive with everything on that front, you guys hired a good one.
If money is not an option, I'd stay at the Nitttany Lion (nice hotel on campus) or the Atherton Hotel (nice and walkable to everything).
As for where to eat, drink, etc. it depends on what type of places you are looking for. SC has it all really.
EDIT- in rereading your post, not sure if you are asking about state college or Pittsburgh

Solid place to eat dinner, sport-bar type of feel, but more than anything somewhere where I can get a good steak dinner with a nice cold beer. Not too picky.
Pizza joint wouldn't be bad either.
Punisher, by staying in the "city" are you talking Pittsburgh, or State College?
Definitely stat at the Nittany Lion Inn. The in-house pub, "Whiskers" is pretty good as well. http://www.nittanylioninn.psu.edu/
As for where to eat...
-The best place for Pizza is Faccia Luna's (the original, not FL2). It is located on S. Atherton St.
-There are a few sports bars in SC, but none of them really have good steak.
1) Champs - www.champssportsgrill.net/
2) Otto's - ottospubandbrewery.com/
3) Damons (not my fav)
-If you want steak, probably the best in the area is Kelly's. http://kellys-steak.com/content/home.php
-If you want to eat at a place downtown where you don't need to drive, the Allen Street Grill is probably your best bet. Make sure to go to the 2nd floor, not the first (which is the Corner Room)... http://www.allenstreetgrill.com/
Nittany Lion Inn for it's access and rustic beauty.
The Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center if you are into a more modernistic hotel, away from campus but closer to the PSU Industrial Research Campus.
SC, but anywhere within 30-50 miles of SC is fine too....figured would just get a nicer hotel in State College than the DuBois, Clearfield etc area
Thanks for all the tips so far guys, great info!

I would also recommend Pickle's for a beer and to watch games. It is within walking distance from both hotels I mentioned and tends to be a hangout for visiting Big 10 fans. Damon's and Champs are just out of downtown but not sure i'd get a steak at any of those places.
Dubois will put you alot closer to St. Mary's, but there's nothing there compared to State College. I would roll with the Nittany Lion Inn like the other posters have already stated. getmyjive pretty much covered the info your looking for. Champs does have decent steaks, but probably not the quality of steak you're looking for (especially if your work is paying for it).
Thanks, I'm checking out both hotels now.
If not steak, anything else (specifically) you'd recommend? I've heard there's an awesome ice cream place there as well.
I believe Kelly's is a hot spot for some of our coaches to take their families out to dinner. My buddy liked Texas Roadhouse, though I have never been there and have no idea what it is like there. My dad enjoys The Tavern when he is out that way, but once again, know nothing about their steaks.
Chumley's is a good spot too

"Whoever’s trying to kill me isn’t getting the job done. But one day, I’m going to punch that f___r in the face."
is Straub your client?
Penn Pallet up in Saint Marys. Great customer
I'm really excited for the trip. I went to MSU and have been to IU and UM a couple times, but this will be my fourth B10 campus
Pickles is great, I definitely should have listed it.

Toftrees is nice. Has a bar/restaurant in it too. Love the Deli on College and many others...The Tavern, Allen Street Grill, and Champs on Atherton is a good sports bar.
The creamary is the ice cream place. Its on campus by the Bryce Jordan center. Good stop on way to the game
Otto's is a great place to eat. Brewpup with great homemade beer and serves very different types of food. Highly recommend the smoked wings...about 2 miles or so from PSU....our family eats their every trip to SC...
Mt. Nittany (grilled Sticky bun with ice cream) at Ye Olde College Diner.
Awesome advice guys I really appreciate it all.
Creamery ice cream is also sold at the game so you could just get it there, although less flavors
Hey Sparty! Long time no see (at least in football)
Just stay at the nittany lion inn, and either walk (across campus) or take a bus. They'll tell you. Have a great time. You will need to walk to downtown for fun, but the inn is the best place for psu feel imo.
Have a great time.
The Tavern downtown is a good restaurant and highly popular with alumni. If you go there, or just stop by their bar (Adam's Apple) order an Original Sin drink. Champs is definitely the best sports bar in SC, but as someone said not a great steak. The other food is good though and the eye candy is nice. I would second Kelly's (steak) and Facia Luna (pizza). There are tons of pizza places downtown that are good for a late night snack. A good pizza place outside of town that is often overlooked is Home Delivery. There pizza is great and so is their other food. Another good restaurant downtown is the Allen St. Grill and Spats Cafe. A few other good restaurants outside of downtown (talking 5-10 minute drive) are Texas Roadhouse and Duffy's Tavern (Boalsburg). Enjoy!
I've drank many a beer at the Eternal Tap.
Two other hotel options that have a great location downtown are:
The Atherton Hotel
Days Inn on Pugh Street
Even closer walking distance to all of the restaurants and bars downtown.
For the best steak:
1. Kelly Steak & Seafood (Boalsburg)
2. Duffy's Tavern (Boalsburg)
3. Carnegie Inn (out of town near Toftrees Resort)
4. The Tavern (downtown State College)
In that order. You really can't go wrong with any.
If you collect frequent hotel points consider:
Courtyard by Mariott
Hilton Garden Inn
Country Inn & Suites
Holiday Inn Express; Hampton Inn; Fairfield Inn & Suites are located in the same area and walking distance to the Texas Road Housea
