I live in a split family… PSU and Pitt alum on both sides. My Dad went to the Pitt/Rutgers game and had a sad report back. He and my Uncle moved down from the nosebleed seats to nice sideline seats when it became clear that 80%+ of the stadium was going to be empty. They did not know that they sat in seats packed up with the families of the players. They got to chatting with the player’s parents, who expressed sadness and disgust about the Senior day and the past 4/5 years. They talked about how their kids work just as hard as any kid in any program in the country, yet nobody showed up for Sr. day. And many of the ones that did arrive bolted for the exits in the 1st quarter when Pitt jumped out to a lead. Mind you, it was Thanksgiving, it was cold, and it was snowing…. but the player’s parents were heart broken to an extent. They spoke about how these kids had adjusted to new coaching staff after new coaching staff, and how the student body and the fans never really rallied behind the kids. Some parents talked about Penn State fans and student rallying behind that team after a child abuse scandal, and Pitt can’t get fans to rally behind the team with no scandal. I know this board has lots of Pitt venom, but you do have to feel for those players, cheerleaders, and band kids that have worked hard for 4/5 years and never got anything back from the students and fans they are working for….
Which is why I don't understand why anyone would CHOOSE Pitt, when they have other options. Place is not, and will not be a football school. Not anymore. Basketball reigns supreme there. You can say the same thing about a lot of basketball schools. I dunno what to say other than it sucks, and it's never really going to change. If that's your only offer, sure. Go there. But if you have another offer, there are a lot of other places where fan support is better. Yet, year after year, kids are tricked into going to that suckhole. I don't get it. Would the parents advise other kids to not go there if they had other offers? I mean, they saw the suckhole first hand...
WE ARE! And we will always be...
But my guess is most visited Pitt for a game before they committed so they really could not be totally shocked.

It is posts like this that still make me wonder why kids want to go to Pitt to play football. I'm not going to bash on Pitt because I do love the city, but from a college football standpoint, I just don't get it. I know Penn State isn't for everyone, but to not have your own fan's support must be rough.
I dont get it... Im from Pittsburgh and I seriously don't... I've been to a few games, and the difference between that and PSU is night and day...
Why? They choose to go to spitt knowing that this is the kind of support they would get.
I love the city too. Thats the crazy part, its a great city to me. But Oakland is isolated and the transportation for students is messed up. So many problems, its a mess really. Not to mention the product that they put out on the field. Mess... I don't understand how anyone could go to a game and commit thereafter. I just don't get it. Unless it is your only BCS offer, why go there. And they get a couple of elite prospects every year. I just keep asking HOW?
thats the thing... their major football recruiting weekends revolve around going to a basketball game and seeing the "Oakland Zoo". They just don't get it. Seeing their recruits talking about selling out Heinz and winning National Championships makes me chuckle a little bit...but in the end, it's just sad to see how badly they all get played.
I really dont understand the leadership at Pitt...i think their problem is "upstairs". I can't stand Pitt..I'm the kind of guy who customizes a onesie for his one year old that says "sh1tt on Pitt" (see sig). But, trying to be unbiased....the school HAD a great tradition and a lot of history on the college football field. It sits in a great recruiting area, even if PSU raided their backyard...still a lot of talent out there. Great football city, good school....so whats the problem? In my opinion, they need to realize that they need a passionate leader with a little fire as a coach. They need someone who can tap that history and sell it on the recruiting trail. I can't believe what a good job BOB has done this year under far more difficult circumstances. Yet they hire Paul Crist. OK, Paul has a good football mind from what I can see (and yes I know thats debatable). But they need more than that....they need someone with a little more charisma. I really believe that they can be a great football program with a little more attention to who they hire and maybe a little more effort in the gameday experience.
Umm...their fans their fans support the team as much as any other teams' fans. Apparently, there just aren't that many of them.

If the kids were tricked somehow and thought it was something else and then were stuck there then I'd feel bad. These kids go on visits to a 3/4 empty stadium, half empty high school stadium for the spring game and watched their team get their asses kicked on Tuesday night primetime football. Yet they still go there no I don't feel bad, if you have options go elsewhere don't put yourself through it.

To be fair, Pitt was more attractive 4/5 years ago when Wanny was trying to breath life into the program. That was right around when they had that win against #1/2 WVU to knock them out of the title game. The following years they had 9 and 10 wins (first 10 win season since Sherill I believe).
Their AD, Pederson, is an idiot. What coach gets fired after getting 9, 10 and 8 wins? Especially at a school who was struggling like Pitt was before an ex-NFL head coach came in and improved the product on the field and the recruiting.
I think Paul Chryst will get them moving in the right direction again. They are playing way better than they did in the beginning of the year. Still, it is obvious that fans won't show up unless it is a 9+ win season (or if they play ND at home). Pitt has one of the THE cheapest ticket prices of any school in a major conference. Only Miami has more embarrassing attendance figures than Pitt, all things considered.

So your rationale is that kids should choose to go to a school because of the fan support? If that is the case, would you recommend that kids pick OSU and Mich over us because they average more fans than we do?
they have the kids come to a game when they play ND, that's their big recruiting weekend.
They know that is coming to them when they choose to play at Pitt (if they have offers from just about any other program in the country). So, no, I do not feel bad for them.
It is not all of a sudden going to change, despite what the coaches and people are feeding them (National championship and filling the stadium against ACC teams like Challingsworth believes). Pitt, during its prime, maxed out at an average of around 55,000 fans (which we know is prob. +5,000 to high at least).
"Whoever’s trying to kill me isn’t getting the job done. But one day, I’m going to punch that f___r in the face."
Well, not all of these kids are superstar 4 star kids with lots of options. Many are locals. Many are walk on's. Many just worked hard for no pay off.
Playing at heinz field has hurt, not helped. Students need to be able to walk to the game from their dorms. They bring the energy. A smaller stadium (like they used to have on campus) is fine.
Second, IMO pitt has done a good job of attracting individual talent - as you can see in the NFL. But they are missing the one team, one school mentality that we embrace. They've gone to far down the we put stars in the NFL path and lost their school spirit. Butts in seats will come from that.
"You can take bowl games and you can take external things from people, but you can't take a warrior's heart."
No. Not the only factor. Not what I'm saying at all. But who wants to play in front of 3K... Its a factor to consider for sure... What about Pitt's facilities? They don't have any... What about Pitt's recent success? They don't have any... I could go on, but there are plenty of reasons why Pitt sucks as a football program. Fan support is part of it, but not the only thing. The discussion here is about lack of fan support. So, I was discussing that.
It still isn't packed. I went to the game when Fitzgerald broke records against VT... It still wasn't packed... They hardly ever pack that place. It's sad.
The only good thing the Pitt program has going for itself is that they share facilities with the Steelers. If it wasn't for that, they wouldn't be getting a sniff from any highly touted prospects but for those that actually do visit Pitt and see this, it excites them and fills their minds with endless possibilities of getting noticed and making it to the next level in the least amount of time possible.
"DOMINATE the state" - James Franklin 1/11/14
Too bad the Steelers look and treat Pitt like a Pee-Wee football team.
The difference between us and OSU/Mich <<< the difference between Pitt and Penn State.
That is the point, and a fairly obvious one.
F the NCAA
F the BOT
The rationale is that you shouldn't be sitting there lamenting about the poor fan support when you knew full well what it was like before letting your kid go there.
I don't feel bad for their players at all. They chose to go play for a third rate football program. They should have done their due diligence during the recruiting process and made a better choice.
It was the same 20 years ago. Sad but true. Like going AA HS game.
And let's be honest. The attendance issue this year wasn't due the product on the field or a lack of love for PSU, it was because of a combination of STEP and the BOT's handling of the scandal.
