Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS
I disagree. Great rivals make the other better. It gives your program a game to circle on the calendar every year, and it wouldn't be a rivalry game that isn't really a rivalry game ala OSU or UM, where we are clearly second or third on their respective lists of hate. OSU and UM benefit from having each other, as do UF-FSU, OU-Texas, ND-USC. Bama-Auburn may be the best example of this, as the ESPN lovefest over the IB gives both programs more exposure than they would receive otherwise on the national level.
JMO, but if we can't out-recruit Pitt we won't be out-recruiting the schools we consider ourselves to be among like OSU, and UM. Let them recruit, let them become regionally relevant, and that way when we beat the living bejesus out of them it will be that much more satisfying.
Also JMO, but OSU benefits from a weak Pitt more than PSU does.
Dominate The State
The problem with that argument is that all those rivalries feature good schools, with dedicated fanbases, and potential. Pitt sucks. They don't have their own stadium, their own real facilities, they don't have fans for God sakes. Unless you call that plethora of yellow seats people. The only way to fill it up is to get PSU to come to town and force people at gunpoint to go watch that circus. Sure, I would love to have a rival, I just want one with some sort of legitimacy.
Yes, we need to out recruit them, fine. And yes, I think OSU will benefit the most from Pitt sucking and WPA opening up. That isn't the point. The point is it is still easier for us to get in there with them sucking. It is one less slice of the pie.
We get nothing from scheduling them as our rival. They make more money because their fans suck and ours would take over the stadium. There is a reason Pitt is the canary in the mine for dying conferences. They encompass everything that a dying college football program is about.
Pitt has some level of potential, if only because of their recruiting area. And the feeling I've gathered from Pittsburgh fans is that they're whores for winners. If the Steelers dip and Pitt starts to win, they'd start paying attention to Pitt. That's not likely to happen, but it could.
I guess we have different views on how we should be out-recruiting them. I'd rather have Pitt get those big time WPA recruits than our primary divisional competition. I think it would be easier to out-recruit Pitt in a PSU-Pitt battle than it would be to out-recruit OSU in a PSU-OSU battle. Its one more slice of the pie for us, but its a much bigger slice of the pie for our competition which makes success for us W/L wise and recruiting wise much more difficult. Its also a bit sad some fans are rooting for other teams to fail so we can recruit better instead of just sacking up and improving recruiting on our own.
Fuck that, I root for teams to fail and want us to win. OSU is going to recruit well no matter what, especially with Urban. We will too as sanctions end. That's part of being a legit program. Why would I want another state school, not in our conference, that gives us no economic benefit, and is a joke of a program, to do well? That's just stupid. They're weak, can't keep coaches, and have good recruits. We need to "sack up ourselves" get in with the best recruits, beat them down when we play them, and step on the throat of their program. We're the dominant state school, time to start acting like it. OSU doesn't let Cinci sack up, and we shouldn't let Pitt do it either. And comparing the two is kind of an insult to Cinci.
Amen. Preach it.
"One man didn't build this program and one man sure as hell cannot tear it down."
I agree mostly.
These WPIAL kids know what Pitt is and has been. They are aware that they don't play in a stadium on campus and that is it is half full. The truth is that kids in Pittsburgh grow up a Pitt fan or Penn State fan - not both. So unless they think Penn State can give them a better chance of playing in the NFL some will choose Pitt. For inner city kids, they like the city life. Not being racist, but it is true, PSU is in the middle of nowhere to a lot of these kids.
That said, I can't imagine not going to Penn State when comparing the 2 for academics and athletics personally.

THANK YOU! I wish more PSU fans had this philosophy. PSU needs to take off the white gloves and get down in the mudd with the rest of the top programs.
Rick Pizzo @BTNRickPizzo
#Badgers source tells me Paul Chryst would be choice over Dave Doeren even if DD were available. Does NOT mean Chryst is top choice overall.
And I am on the more mild side in terms of hating Pitt. I like to see them lose, but I'm not an idiot about it. However, if Pitt is going through ANOTHER coaching change, and that helps us with a kid who wants to stay relatively close to home (think D. Johnson), I'm all for it. They are elated that we have sanctions upon us. We should feel the same about their FB team being a dumpster fire.
Here, Here. (3 upvotes from me in one thread!)
Should we root for OSU to do well (on the field and in recruiting) for the same reasons? Hell (to the) No!
You are out of your mind. Steelers could be sub .500 for a decade and Pitt would still have the same amount of empty seats unless PSU, ND, WVU are in town.
what you've just said ... is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Billy Madison and I agree with this 100%
Sounds like Chryst is homesick already, LOL
MADISON, Wis. -- Will Paul Chryst be returning to his home state and to the football program he helped guide back to the top of the Big Ten Conference in 2010 and 11?
I agree, don't understand how Tex can comment on the Pittsburgh sports fan when he's probably never even been in the city? Pitt will always play second fiddle in the Burgh. They are behind the Steelers, the Penguins, and the Pirates and they havent had a winning season in 20 years! Even when Pitt was good in the late 70s, early 80s they couldn't sell out their stadium that was smaller then Heinz Field.

If Pitt's program was anything but a joke, this wouldn't even be a topic. They wouldn't be bungling through coach after coach and be pointing to Wanstadt as the "good ole days". There is zero desire there to make any real move to becoming a top flight football program. There just isn't the support (fan or monetary) to develop anything. They have not been relevant for over 30 years. The entire scandal we've had to deal with should be their ticket to the big time, instead they'll remain the red-headed step-child who just won't be able to measure up.
If PC isn't gone this year, he will be soon.
On a side note, I would absolutely love for them to get kicked in the junk again and have to hire another coach.
Will also be funny when the conference they just joined implodes.
glad to see many agree. screw Pitt, I want them to suffer soul crushing defeat after soul crushing defeat. dont let them even think they are on the same level as Penn State. this is when PSU will be their most vulnerable and Pitt still is not comparable, they barely went 6-6 in the Big East. They would be 4-8 at best in the B1G.
I don't know how anyone could live in SW Pa, be a PSU fan and not want to see them get nut crushing blow after nut crushing blow. Their fans are just insanely delusional.
From watching them a good bit, I wouldnt say they improved much at all through the season. I would say that they played to their level of competition. That is they played up to teams like ND and played down to the lesser teams like UCONN.
"Whoever’s trying to kill me isn’t getting the job done. But one day, I’m going to punch that f___r in the face."
Lots of talk like you are the Wisconsin AD himself...Yet we now know that Alvarez has Chryst as #1.
He is not an unknown commodity to UW. Hes been around that program for awhile. He is a somewhat unknown commodity in HC, but he was almost a sure fire lock to become HC if Bielema ever left and he was still on the UW staff.
