I'm writing a story for a sportswriting class that will crown the best current athlete at Penn State based on sheer speed, size, strength, agility and success at his respective sport. To start, I'm trying to come up with a list of about 15-20 names to consider. Can anyone help out? I'm looking for the obvious ones and the under-the-radar ones.
Well if current level of success is a component in your argument, it's going to be tough to beat Ed Ruth.
Whoever the best all-around men's gymnast is should be considered.
“We need to keep this (expletive) together,” Mauti and Zordich to Hill
Not sure how their speed is, and there "size" heightwise is small.
Ethan Kilmer was one of my favorite athletes to watch play football.
"Whoever’s trying to kill me isn’t getting the job done. But one day, I’m going to punch that f___r in the face."
I'd have to say Tim Frazier has to be on the list.
Gerald Hodges would be the nominee from the FB team, I'd imagine. He was an elite wrestler coming out of HS, beyond being a physical specimen on the football field.
“We’re doing things we couldn’t imagine,” says safety Stephen Obeng-Agyapong. “But we’re doing them together.”
Thanks for the help guys. The short list so far is looking like: Frazier, Hodges, David Taylor, Ed Ruth
Do you have any way of trimming down your qualities to a specific sport? Obviously depending on the sport one's size, speed, agility, strenght are all going to vary.
Wrestling - Taylor, Ruth
Gymnastics - Rosenthal (yeah, yeah - i dont follow it, only know him from my high school)
Football - Hodges, Mauti
Anyone familiar with the soccer team? Would anyone on that squad qualify?
All those guys should definitely be considered, I'd probably add Silas to the list too, but he isn't a better athlete than the other guys.
Si Redd, Fortt, and Kenney are the other football guys at the top of my list. Kenney may be the best of the bunch.
Suck It Emmert!! and "Sorry for not being sorry for being a Penn Stater" - Philafan
Mark fetrow was a senior this year on the soccer team, but hes a tall, strong athletic center back.. i think he got drafted in the MLS supplemental draft.

David Taylor? Fortt, Hodges, Redd, Belton
The same could be said for most of the wrestling team.
My vote would goto Timmy Frazier, for what he does at his size and weight.
Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Name. All Game.
He might not even be the winner on his own team. David Taylor was the Hodge Award winner for the best wrestler in country - only the third sophomore to ever win it (Ruth was second). Taylor also won the NCAA's most dominant wrestler award (I believe Ruth was third here - at least he was going into the NCAA, he might have moved up to second afterward). And he was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA tournament and also won the Gorriaran Award winner for the most falls in the least amount of time at the NCAAs.
As good as Ruth is, I'd have a hard time naming him over Taylor.
I gave him the nod due to higher weight class. Both kids are obviously as good as it gets.
I still sing the old words to the Alma Mater---"into men, into men." But in my opinion, your list is crying out for the inclusion of at least one girl from the women's volleyball team! Either Deja McClendon or Ariel Scott. And I'm glad to see David Taylor and Ed Ruth on your list....those guys are absolutely awesome.
David Taylor. Of all the other athletes listed, can you say that they are the best athlete in their entire sport? No. But you can about David Taylor. At nationals, he pinned his first four opponents and then won by a technical fall in the national championship match.
Taylor is the best wrestler, but this does not indicate the best Athlete. I believe Ruth is more athletic. Collegewrestlers are the most well conditioned athletes. They need strength, power, quickness, flexibility, endurance.
Redd, Taylor and Ruth are good. How about a female athlete? I pick Deja McClendon.
I heard McGloin was quite the basketball player in HS....
