Well next season Saban and Bama will have a not-challenging opponent and then a bye week before facing Sumlin.
Giving Saban any extra time to prepare is dangerous, but Jonny Football is seemingly impossible to prepare for. I'm excited to see what Saban comes up with, if anybody can shut down JF it's NS.
Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS
I wish I could find a clip of that...
I have to say, I think some people are going way overboard on assuming Manziel will just dominate next year. First of all, there's the sophomore slump (teams will be more prepared for him). Second, they lose a number of top players, including one of their first round OT's, their OC, plenty of WR's, and a top DL, among other players. Third, aTm did beat Alabama, but they also had the benefit of a +3 turnover margin.
Tebow didn't exactly tear it up the year after he won the Heisman. I don't know if aTm will go 8-5 or something, but I felt like this year was their ceiling for now. They'll rebound in another year or two when their current recruiting classes come into their own. Just don't see them doing as well this coming year as people think. But I guess you never know.
Man, just a year ago most of us were on the ledge waiting to be pushed over into the abyss after the O'Brien hire. Now we cant get enough of him!

Posted this in twitter thread, but thought it would be great here, too.

Their OC is the biggest loss. I don't remember if it was Joeckel or the other one (I think his name is Matthews?), but both are studs and were the biggest reason aTm and JFF did so well this season.
I don't think their WR production drops off much. Other than Swopes, the caliber kids Sumlin is taking in this class, not to mention the sheer number of receivers, that they should be better than what aTm had this past year. The route trees are probably pretty complex, but with the things Sumlin seems to emphasize in his program (school not being one of them), they should have enough time to get the playbook down by the time the season rolls around.
I agree next year will be a down year, which won't be the fault of JF or Sumlin (even though he's a dbag), but only in terms of the quality of team they have, not W-Ls. They only have two really tough games, and they're Bama in week 3 and @LSU in week 13. After that, their toughest games IMO are: @Ole Miss in week 7, and MissState in week 11. Those games should be victories if they come to play though, because Ole Miss doesn't have the talent yet and Mullen has underachieved with the talent he has aquired (still impressive as hell he can sustain any type of success in Starkville though) which is still less than what aTm will have next season.
Unfortunately, 10-2/11-1 in the SEC will get them all kinds of hype, and they'll possibly get a BCS bowl invite again if Les Miles pulls a derp or two during the season.
Its amazing to me that a team that should take a step back talent wise will still be so successful W-L wise in the toughest division in football. The SEC schedules their conference slate better than any other conference, its amazing they can do it so consistently.
I find aTm to be an interesting case study. SEC touts itself as being this uber-conference, but a team with a redshirt freshman starting at QB waltzes in and goes 10-2, beating the top team? aTm brought a lot of talent this past year, but it's still amusing after all the SEC fans spout off about how nobody else can contend with the schedule SEC teams have to contend with.
As for WR's...they're bringing in some good ones. But JMO, even though WR is a position where talent can reign supreme over experience, I still think that going from SR's to frosh certainly implies some dropoff. You never know if things will click - look at Dorial Green-Beckham.
Teams don't typically beat Alabama two years in a row, I have a feeling they will indeed defeat aTm, but we'll see.
It was on one of the Game Day Preseason shows shortly after the sanctions. July-August range. It was also a week or two after Mark May's half hour rant on how disgusting Penn State is. May was still on his high horse because he was making a big joke of how bad he thought Penn State would be. It was Holtz, May, and Herby because after May got done having fun at PSU's expense, Herby very seriously said that in his opinion, if PSU finished .500, they should hand BOB COY because of hand he was dealt. Gotta love Herby.
BTW, does anyone like Mark May? Regardless of what team you root for.
Mark May is a POS. In fact, I said the other day after I left the bathroom, "No one go in there for about 10-15 mins, I just took a huge Mark May."
WE ARE! And we will always be...
I do too. I've come to the conclusion that while aTm is a very good team, the SEC has been propped up by some great teams (UF under Meyer, Bama under Saban, a couple LSU teams under Saban and in spite of Miles), which have covered the average-ness that the rest of the SEC exemplifies.
Lower level conference teams have showed well a time or two, but there have been some favorable matchups for them the past few years IMO.
I think Bama wins convincingly because Saban will find a way to shut down JFF. I think aTm can beat LSU though because Miles is a moron of a football coach.
BTW, I meant OT in my last post, not OC. Kingsbury is good , but that tackle tandem was unreal this year.
