Which recruits in this class will have an immediate impact in the 2013 campaign?
Defense: Neiko Robinson (most underrated player in class)
Offense: Brendan Mahon or Adam Breneman (too close to call...will depend on Adam's rehab; however Mahon should break from tradition and play as a true freshman OL)
Special Teams: Neiko Robinson (missed four games this fall, yet had seven interceptions and returned four to the house!)
Robinson is tiny. He needs a redshirt and time in the weight room.
Smith and Smith are both older players who enrolled early. I'd be surprised if they didn't play. Ferguson almost certainly plays, whether as a starter or as the backup to Bench.
I'm not counting on anyone else. AB should take a chill pill and rehab his knee. We don't need him this year and personally I'd like him to be in the same class as Hack, who should take the redshirt so he can play in two bowl games later in his career. Obviously if he is clearly the best player than you have to play him. I don't expect that to be the case, though.
Two summer enrollment freshman that I could see sneaking in are Bell and Parker Cothran. Bell because we have so few linebackers and Cothran because A) we have nothing proven at DT and B) because he is really stinking good. LJ has been known to play freshman DL: Jones, Hill, Odrick, Evans, etc etc. Could see it in this case.
“We’re doing things we couldn’t imagine,” says safety Stephen Obeng-Agyapong. “But we’re doing them together.”
Defense: The Smiths, and Robinson. Maybe Zayd or Bell on ST. Maybe
Offense: Brenneman.. I said that a while ago, but his knee is apparently ahead of schedule. If he can help us, BOB plays him. But if not him, I dont see anyone else on offense seeing the field- unless Hamilton or Anderson really impresses... Perimeter skill guys have a tendency to play earlier...
WE ARE! And we will always be...
Davis was tiny too... We have a need at the position, and Neiko will probably be 175-180 by the time he enters camp... If he has cover skills, he will play.
Davis never would have played last year if we had anybody else. This year, we'll have a two deep without Robinson, plus multiple walkons who have played. It's a completely different set of circumstances.

It will be an open competition at CB. And I think Robinson starts there- just like the Smiths... If he outplays them, he plays... Kiley, SOA and Willis are safeties... I think Robinson will prob end up there, but starting out, at his size, he's a corner- again, like the Smiths... I do think Davis will start opposite Amos. But beyond him, who knows... Lucas didn't play a ton, and he may move to S this year- who knows... Open competition is open competition...
Well, there are a few possibilities, but in order of chances:
1. J Smith
4. Brenneman (lots of time to heal for the year)
5. A Smith
7. P. Cothren
9. Hamilton (specialist?)
15. Cothran (unless there are injuries, he develops)
16. Gaines (needs a lot of weight)
17. Hartman (bulk up)
Some of these guys could be special teams players, where I see Bell contributing. No way a lineman gets on the field. OL. We have such depth of upperclass OL, that they all get fitted for shirts on day 1. DL too. There is a rotation, and they all need some size.
Put it this way ... if a lot of them play, we're in trouble.
You realize J Smith didn't play football his senior year of high school, right? I know he's already enrolled but I think he redshirts.
He has been training the entire extra year and has all spring. He will play.
Yes I'd be real surprised if he didn't play.
I expect a couple of the DBs to play, possibly one of the LBs (not start), and maybe a QB if Ferg or Hack can win the job. Everyone else should redshirt.

I think Hamilton and/or Sickels could come in & challenge for playing time. I think we want to RS as many guys as possible, but I wouldn't be surprised if either of those guys impress enough to get on the field this year - even if just for STs.
"I expect a couple of the DBs to play,"
I didn't realize that Emmert and Freeh still had eligibility remaining?!?!
IMO, Smith & Smith (the most physically ready at a position of need and can help on ST), Bell (Depth) and Ferg (either starts or backs up Bench). At least this is my hope, Redshirt the rest if you can. Guys like Hamilton or Brenneman might be able to earn PT but we are going to need them on the field in a few yrs and there are guys in both of those positions that can do the job.
