Chambers PC notes

  • When Penn State plays at Northwestern tomorrow, it will mark exactly two years and one day since the Nittany Lions' last Big Ten road win -- a 66-63 victory at, of all places, Williams Arena, where they just suffered arguably their worst loss of the season.

Penn State coach Patrick Chambers talked about how his team can recover from Saturday's 73-44 defeat to the Golden Gophers.

"It's one game," Chambers said. "Gotta move on. We haven't been beat like that all year. We went from the highest of highs, top of the mountain, to the lowest of lows. We couldn't make a shot. It's been a long time since we couldn't make a shot on the road. We'll try to learn from it, make sure it doesn't happen again."

-- The Nittany Lions did not score until more than 11 minutes had elapsed and looked suffocated against a swarming Minnesota defense. I asked Chambers if he had a go-to play or a go-to player just to get his team on the board during lengthy droughts.

"There are certain sets that you place in after a timeout to get yourself a layup or get you to the foul line," Chambers said. "We tried to do all that. Give Minnesota a lot of credit.

"It was almost like we were shocked. We played a little bit stunned, a little bit shocked. When we tried to get it back, it was just too late."

-- Penn State is 0-17 in Big Ten road games under Chambers but should have a great chance to break that streak Thursday. The Wildcats have lost six straight conference games, all by double digits.

Chambers continues to maintain his "next game on the schedule" approach, but it was pretty clear he wants that first B10 road win badly.

"I love playing on the road," he said. "There's nothing like winning in somebody else's house. It may not happen this week, but it'll happen. It's going to be an amazing feeling for these kids. But hopefully it happens sooner than later."

-- The Nittany Lions had considered heading to Evanston tonight to get ahead of the weather, Chambers said, but ultimately decided to leave Wednesday night instead.
