Alright, so some of you guys know I'm a nerd and keep track of the scholarships and commits in a little handy dandy spreadsheet I have. It spans all four (247, Rivals, Scout, ESPN) sites. Every couple months I like to come on here and compare it to last year's and just have some notes about it. Couple of quick notes before I put down some tidbits: any offer Sean verifies, I put in. But if they other two sites (not ESPN, they suck) report it, I put it in the spreadsheet. Except for those two JUCO guys on here, they aren't in there. So my numbers may be slightly different from what is in this database. Anyways, away we go...
Of these 81 offers 32 have committed to schools so far. That 93 from last year includes that HUGE splurge that went out to damn near every kid at the end of the cycle. We've offered lots of kids, and our staff has put in some work. How much? Lets look at the break down by state:
2012 Top 5 (# of Offers)
We also offered a kid in Texas which we didn't do last year. GA recruiting is slower with only 2, but lots of names have been mentioned lately. So there is more of a Southern flavor coming in soon. Maryland is an interesting case. Only 5 offers there this year, after a higher focus last year. May just be a down year there I suppose. I am thrilled about VA, 9 this year with only 6 last year and (BONUS INFO) four already made for the 2014 class.
So what are our positions of need? Well let us look at how that breask down...
Athletes are Delton Williams, Kyle LaPorte, Tyler Boyd, and Marcus Ball. That could impact the DB position especially.
Now about those numbers, the TE one makes me smile every time. Hehehe. But holy hell, you think the coaching staff wants LBs and DBs this year? Over one quarter of our offers out are to LBs. Geeeeeeez. Add in DBs and ATH and its just over 50% for three positions (counting ATH as one for some reason).
Last year's cumulative (all four) average star rating for our recruits: 2.9
This year's cumulative star rating for our recruits: 3.8
Not a "stars are everything guy" but, yeah.
Oh yeah, we have 4 All-Americans so far. 50% of our recruits are All-Americans.
Just some stuff to chew on.
So this is why you weren't getting back to my texts...
nice work as usual btw.
I never want to hear rmj say we need to start offering more dbs...
Great stuff, MTayl. Thanks.
thanks man, hack sickels webb and AB?
Nice work MTayl, like how this staff has spread our reach which can help us compensate if our normal areas are down. Next years PA class looks down but getting kids as we have from the New England states with more emphasis on Virginia and Georgia, Florida and Texas will help us get top classes on a more frequent basis.
Meyer4Prez "This is wut happens when ur team site analyst are huge homers glad Bill K+Alex G keep it real instead of getting our hopes up."
Since the New England mention, here's some numbers I found interesting. New England defined as Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.
2012 Offers: 6 (4 MA, 1 NH, 1 CT). Three ended up here, and 5 were at one point committed to Penn State.
2013 Offers: 0
Now Bill Kenney used to recruit there, he's gone. It isn't talent rich by any means anyways, but there is some talent there. I wonder if this staff isn't looking as hard at that area (their choice, not laziness) or just a fluke. Some guys from New England that have been mentioned here for 2013 include: David Coggins (CT; has visited, reportedly will be back for camp), Boeing Brown (CT; ), Maurice Hurst Jr. (MA; wanted, yet never got an offer); and John Monetlus (MA; damn mom...). In fact, NH, VT, ME, and VT don't even have any recruits listed for them in the 247 database (the recruiting rankings page).
Great stuff! Thanks!
"On paper they have nothing to play for– no bowl games, rankings, or championships– yet they play like they have everything on the line."
Wait until the three camps get over in the next month, eerrrr well June. I figure my next one will be around July 4th and it will have really changed.
Mtayl72, nice work, thanks for posting the stats.
Kudos for the nice play on words in your title too.
Very cool and thanks for sharing!!
Someone posted a similar picture before, but either way...
If winning was easy even losers would do it.
Great work man! At first my thought was we should peppering the New England because of the Patriots connection with BOB but it sounds like talent is down in the area for the year. I love our focus in the south. We need 1 or 2 kids to commit from the south and I think that sets us up for years to come. Kids look for familiarity and if there are other kids at Penn State from the south that's just another plus for us since it's something to bond over.
Thanks for taking the time to do this, great job.
This isn't why he hasn't gotten back to you. The REAL reason is he is busy working on Obamas reelection campaign.
Try to fathom the hypocrisy of a Government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured .but not prove they're a citizen
As another benchmark, I kept track of the offers for the 09 class:
offers: 74 . . . commits: 27
With 81 offers out for this class already, it's a good bet they'll end up with well over 100 by LOI day. Some may see this as a sign of working harder than the last staff, but you could also argue it is a lack of focus on getting the guys they really want.

And it'd be a dumb argument, imo. If you seriously compare the efforts, and faactor in what just happen, the two aren't close. That's like saying Alabama, who has well over 100 offers out right now, cannot focus. It's a different strategy.
Or you could argue offering more kids forces you to work harder...
Well done! It makes me giddy to see all this recruiting action. I can't keep track of all these offers this is quite a change and with all these offers we are going to bring in some very good DBs and LBs
