Here are the 4 primary issues, in no particular order, that we face in recruiting Western PA Talent.
1)HS Coaches w/Yinzer mentalities. There are HS Coaches that grew up during the height of the rivalry that view PSU as the enemy, and Pitt as a relevant program. They actively encourage their kids to pursue Pitt while spurning PSU.
2) The stigma that PSU is "too country" for inner city kids. Unfortunately we all know what "too country" really means. This is obviously ridiculous and needs to be dispelled by our coaches and student athletes. PSU is a diverse community that offers a true college town experience. Oakland... not so much.
3) The Pittsburgh Sports Media and clowns like Slob Lichtenfels. There are members of the Pittsburgh Media that hate PSU, hated Paterno and will beat the drum for Pitt 24/7. I have absolutely no problem with the Pitt Media supporting the local team. The issue that needs to be addressed by PSU is that they take absolute glee in burying the flagship in state university. Does Cincinnati Media do this to OSU? I doubt it very much. As distasteful is it sounds we need to change the perception of some of these clowns.
As for Slob. He needs to be called out for what he is. He is a Pitt Shill masquerading as a "journalist." He claims to be all about getting kids exposure, in the hopes of getting them scholarship offers. In reality he manipulates recruit rankings for Western PA Prospects in an attempt to artificially inflate Pitt's recruiting profile. It is well known by many familiar with him from his days at Scout, that his manipulation is not only reserved for rankings(Hi Mr Williams) He is the worst kind of troll and should not be allowed anywhere near this site. PSU should tell any prospect being recruited by both schools to take anything he tells them with a grain of salt. If he tells them something about PSU that is outside of what the coaches themselves have been relaying, then they should call a coach for clarification. That way he can't tell 5* recruits that their position coach is leaving for Pitt.
4) Finally, the staff needs to do a good job of repairing the bridges burned by the previous regime. Joe had beef w/entirely too many schools, and some for petty reasons. We need to be welcoming of these schools and their players. Invite them to visit, and visit their schools. The clinics, speaking engagements by Bob and Co, as well as the general openness of the program to HS coaches will all pay dividends over the next 4-5 years.
