wasn't able to watch it, but listened to it while I was at the boys flag football game on saturday.
Will share my thoughts.
Ok. Computer crashed with my notes.
Offensive line was just dominating. Looks a LOT better with Donovan Smith and Farrell at tackle. Shrive got some time at guard and looked decent from what I saw.
McGloin was the worst he's been all year. Left at least 21 more points on the field.
Defense is playing better. Wouldn't say they are playing great, but they are better. NW will challenge us much like Ohio did because of their tempo.
No Redd, No Problem. Running game ran for about 175 yards. I think in a perfect game, you'd see PSU run for 150-160, and throw for 250-275. Offense is getting close to being unstoppable. If they get the running game consistent, look out. Linebackers won't be able to drop into zones, and have to play more honest. Robinson saw his first bracket game. Lehman is a matchup problem, along with Carter. Felder or Kenney...STEP UP!
The hit on Lehman. Agree with the penalty, not so much on the ejection.
Mauti is an absolute beast, but I'm not so sure that Hull isn't our most athletic LB. He's playing really good football (as is Mauti, Carson and Hodges).
Illinois is a very undisciplined team. I saw a quote somewhere, and it definitely applies. Penn State got their coach from the Patriots, Illinois got theirs from Toledo. Even sanctioned there's no comparison in the programs.
Lou Holtz AND Mark May were extremely positive towards Penn State. Unheard of.
Brian Griese talking up PSU. Loved the Hackenberg talk, but nothing about Breneman, however made a great point about the Big Ten being a spread offense conference, and if you're a pro-style QB, and an elite TE, why are you not considering Penn State? I'd add in WR's to that mix as well.
We're 5 games in, and Penn State is improving each week. This week it was the domination of the OL, and the emergence of the RB's. Been a long time since I was able to say, PSU is getting better each week.
Final thoughts: This team could be very dangerous. There's not a team the rest of the year that IMO has the defense to completely shut down PSU's offense. Wisconsin looked awful, Ohio State going into the MSU game was giving up almost 400 yards a game, Purdue gave up a ton of yards to Marshall. Indiana gave up 700 to Northwestern.
I haven't been impressed with OSU's defense whatsoever. I wonder if Urbz unloads Fickell at the end of the season if this continues.
Wondering the same. He did hire the guy that was HC at UNC last year and he has a solid defensive background so I'll be anxious to see what happens if OSU's D doesn't improve. They do have a ton of talent but are mostly a very young and inexperienced D.
"DOMINATE the state" - James Franklin 1/11/14
Flip it around. The offense is young, absent Stoneburner, Boren, Fragel ...
The defense is LOADED with juniors and seniors. Simon (sr.), Nathan Williams (sr.), Goebel (Sr.), Hankins (Jr.), Klein (Sr.), Sabino (Sr.) and one senior and two juniors in the DB field.
I agree with your assessment except for the STEP UP part. Felder and Kenney ran the routes they were assigned and caught the balls thrown near them (many were at their feet or just behind them). Obviously Kenney is being used as a short yardage and screen guy. He broke one screen pass for a big first down and had no blocking from Felder on another.
Felder, as i remember, caught the only ball thrown to him and made a nice move. Lots of games to play but I'd like to see Kenney run some fly patterns or wheel routes. The STEP UP part is on the coaches to continue to design roles for them....and they will!
What I like seeing is those crossing routes. They constantly beat PSU's defense in previous years time and time again (remember Illinois a couple years ago?). Now we're the one killing others with them. BOB is mixing it up just enough to keep those crossing routes effective.
He hired Butch Davis? That guy is a walking NCAA violation.
Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS
Everett Withers (sp?), the interim HC after Davis was fired.
Fickell was supposed to be a stud DC. I've only seen them play against MSU, what is going on this season?

Regarding the ejection, I don't think that particular play was worthy of an ejection but the ejection came from an Illinois trend. #1 for Illinois was called for targeting early, then he targeted again on a no call. Then #9 targets for the 3rd time on a clear "what are you doing?" dumbass hit. I think the ejection was a signal to the Illini instead of an ejection for that particular hit.
Havent been impressed with Shazier either. OSU fans think this kid is the second coming of [insert any hall of fame linebacker here]. While he may have talent, he misses tackles left and right. Every highlight that gameday showed this weekend when talking about OSU's defense included #10 missing a tackle.

could be dan.
That was the 3rd one of the half.
They are getting torched. Including the MSU game in which they looked ok (Maxwell had like 280 passing and I think he sucks), they are giving up 376 yards per game, 275.6 via the air. Cal had 512 yards in total offense and the offensive juggernaut in UAB had 403.
I noticed Maxwell's receivers have stone hands and weren't helping him out much. He seemed like a pretty good QB overall though for a freshman.
Doesn't make much sense. They had a good defense last year and still have talent on the roster.
