Jeff, why haven't you been featured on a media day highlight picture like Sean? Is it because you lack a beard?
What is a media day highlight picture?
Also, what is a Sean?
It was interesting watching Meyer's press conference. Got a lot of questions, predictably, about off-field stuff. Handled them pretty calmly and made an attempt to answer most of them.
Along with only 1 question about 2013
Success without honor is an unseasoned dish; it will satisfy your hunger, but it won't taste good.
O'Brien is underway ...
"Really excited to be here, this is my second Big Ten Media Day ...
"It's good to see the other coaches in the league. I have a lot of respect for the coaches in the league. We had a good meeting with Jim Delany this morning.
"Really excited about the season. We have a group of kids that have worked extremely hard in the offseason ... great group of guys to work with. Can't wait."
On starting Hack:
"I don't think it's unusual. We have two quarterbacks that will compete for starting job ... obviously we haven't had a chance to work with Christian yet. Tyler we worked with in the spring and he improved every day. One thing that's exciting about working with young QB is you get a chance to mold that QB, to teach him. Charlie Fisher and I will teach our QBs how to play in our offense and manage the game and we're excited about that.
Will make decision on starter in training camp.
"I'm here to talk about the 2013 team. A lot of the things I talked about here laast year are water under the bridge. WE're in an unprecdented situation, but we're thankful for our players. The rules are what they are, and that's what we play under, and what we're going to do. Again, just want to concentrate on the 2013 season."
On deciding on starting QB:
"You have to make a decision about halfway through training camp. In order to give that guy enough time to prepare for Syracuse, you have to give him a couple weeks to get ready for the first game at the very least. About halfway through we'll have enough evaluation of our practice film, and we'll make a decision, we'll do what's best for our football team. It's an exciting time for us. We don't look at it as woe is me, we look at it as a chance to work with two good young QBs."
On loss of Bars:
"We've instilled the phrase "Next man up." There's some guys there that need to step up.
As far as Bars was concerned, I felt bad for him because here's a guy who probably hasn't been talked about enough. He was not only a starting candidate but a core player on special teams.
I don't want to speak for Brad but I believe he will come back for a fifth year next year. He's what a student-athlete really means."
Amos and SOB coming down to play some LB lol
On depth concerns:
"We'll have to go into camp and see how much our players have improved at those positions (LB and DL). We get Ben Kline back. Gary Wooten, can he add depth there? We've got to look at all the different players we have on defense. What can a guy like Adrian Amos do? Can Stephen Obeng come down and play some linebacker? I know John Butler has done a good job of preparing for all these different scenarios.
Defensive-line wise, does Evan Schwan step up? Great kid, hard-working summer. Is that a candidate to step up? Are we concerned? We don't use the word concerned too much in our program, we just look for ways to relate to different scenarios that may occur."
On taking on first-year coach in Scott Shafer:
"First-year head coaches, first games, everybody's different as to how they handle it. You look at my situation last year, I could have done a much better job in my opening game than I did last year. Coach Shafer's going to do a fantastic job at Syracuse."
On difference between being here this year vs. last year:
"I think we're in a better mood this year. Obviously you're more comfortable in your position as a football coach. You know your players, the chemistry ... does that lead to victories? Who knows?"
What kind of setback is Ferguson not being a part of summer workouts and when will he be back?
"He'll be back. Summer's voluntary. He's at home. Got some personal things he's dealing with at home. He'll come in, he'll be here for training camp. What time, what day -- I don't know. I'm sure he'll be at the first team meeting and ready to compete with Christian for that job."
Have you seen anything different out of Carson in offseason?
"Glenn is a high-character guy, very intense. Glenn's not a very rah-rah guy. He's very serious about his position at Penn State and the tradition of Linebacker U. He was a leader last year, he's a leader right now. He means a lot to our football team."
Do you anticipate Carter and Zwinak being able to do everything in camp?
"I anticipate both guys will be back for camp. Carter injured his wrist against Nebraska, has had more time to heal. Zack hasn't had as much time. Kyle might be a little bit ahead of Zack, but both guys will be ready in training camp. Zack will participate but he might not be full-contact right away."
Short and sweet.
No one wanted to ask him questions toward the end, apparently. Which I'm sure O'Brien didn't mind.
"we don't have any concers" love it
So nothing about Carson as punt returner?
Hodges as a Punt returner might have been the silliest idea that O'Brien ever had.
Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Name. All Game.
I wonder if we'll see as many 4th down attempts this year.. I mean ficken turned out to be not bad towards the end of the year
I feel there is more behind it.
SOA at LB.....interesting.
Be great if he could provide some depth there as well as safety.
Not sure my paraphrased typing reflected it, but it's just as likely we see Amos at LB as SOA.
I doubt it's something they'd do on a regular basis but it could be a great way to disguise coverages.
“We’re doing things we couldn’t imagine,” says safety Stephen Obeng-Agyapong. “But we’re doing them together.”
