Many will disagree but I think we will not take a step back in the overall playmaking of this defense. Leadership remains to be seen as there are some big shoes to fill, although I do feel Carson is going to be a great leader this year. Austin Johnson, if healthy could be one of the biggest stories as he is going to have a coming out party this year IMO and be dominant. We have at least 3 ends that will make a big impact, while the LB's will make plenty of plays. Being thin may catch up to that unit, but that group will be just fine otherwise. Lets not forget the wildcard here which is how these guys are packaged and used by Butler.
I accidentally down voted you? Can someone even it out please. Thanks
IMO we have a lot of guys who have a chance to step up this year. Even Amos is only a true junior. Still young.
I am very excited to see this young defensive unit. Zettel, Barnes, Johnson, Lucas, Williams. Hull and CJ are both guys who we knew would take some time but seem poised to finally emerge. Hard to say who will be the best. I'd put my money on Barnes though. He was WAY ahead of schedule last year. Hope he keeps progressing at the rate he has been.
“We’re doing things we couldn’t imagine,” says safety Stephen Obeng-Agyapong. “But we’re doing them together.”
actually, I would guess that's the stance for a lot of PSU fans. We lost 2 veteran backers to the NFL and are replacing them with a career back up (albeit a very good one) and likely a rsFR who is coming off a season ending injury. We are also losing our best DT who was a real difference maker and replacing him with a young guy that with no experience. We also lost Morris who was a pretty good CB and will be starting 2 youngsters there too.
I think they will be a decent defense, but I certainly agree that it's quite possible, if not likely, that they take a small step back from last year. Hard to predict though because we have a lot of young talent that is unknown. Luckily, our schedule isn't exactly full of offensive power and if we get even modest play from a young QB, our offense should help give the defense a cushion in some games.
The top two defensive players for me would be Barnes and Amos. After that I'd probably have to go with Carson.
Barnes has my vote from the returning slated starters. Kid's pretty outstanding.
However.... my call.... by the end of the year, it's gonna be Zettel. He reminds me of JJ Watt.... doesn't stop. When given snaps last year, he was all over the place, in on every play.
Barnes - Amos - Hull - Carson - guess work
PENN STATE FOREVER
Ha, no big deal. Thanks.
Obviously I was only talking about players who are still on the team.
