I think AJ Hawk was arguably as good as any college linebacker in recent (i.e. last 10-15 years) memory. Guy was a true stud of a LB. I would put him right there with our best in the same time span (Poz, Conner, Lee, Bowman). But after Hawk, I think there is a noticeable (not steep though) drop off to your next level of guys. Whereas, we have Poz, Conner, Lee, Bowman, and now Mauti that stand there with Hawk.
Shazier sure picked the wrong year for this argument. Osu has had their fair share of talented LBs, no question, but there is only one LBU. This happens every few years when a team gets a stud LB or two, remember USC saying the same thing.
Also, there's a lot to like about shazier but storm klein is terrible.
Alabama has been trying to claim it as well.
But there us only 1 true one :)
Suck It Emmert!! and "Sorry for not being sorry for being a Penn Stater" - Philafan
That's all well and good and Shazier may turn into a fantastic LB for OSU but right now he is not better than Hodges and Mauti.
I don't think anyone in the thread is coming close to saying that. I know I didn't lol
Yeah, since AJ, the only one that would be mentionable would be Little Animal...He was good at OSU and is playing well in the league...Nothing since then though....No doubt that this year surely is the wrong year to be talkiing LB smack....
Big Ten Network Linebacker rankings actually had Laurinitis ranked number two overall ahead of Hawk at number 4. Not that the BTN rankings are the be all end all but its interesting .
Here is link if you were curious...
BacardiBuckeye: "But in all honesty I like Penn State, I want to see Penn State do good that's why I check this board everyday." 4/2/14
Hawk too low; Laurinitis way too high - 5th at best IMO.
Hawk was a monster in college, a monster. As for Shazier, I've seen enough Buckeye games to know that the kid can play. Yes, he could clean up his tackling, but he's a heck of an athlete at the position.
Quite a list if Navarro is kept off it. Not sure I agree with that. Also, whatever the ranking overall, I personally take Hawk over Laurinitis.
I don't agree with the omission of Bowman at all. PSU should have four of the top 10 without question.
Hawk should be number 2 behind Poz. Pile-jumper number 2 is ridiculous.
Injuries and lack of overall games started hurt Bowman when it comes to these lists. He doesnt have the overall stats and doesnt have the list of accolades. I think just all-big ten.
I have said it before, its my opinion that if Bowman played in as many games as Poz or Connor or Lee, or, if he came back for his senior season his legacy would be as good Dan Connor for sure and I think many would put him near or at the top of list of all time Penn State backers. He most likely would have received the national recognition he deserved (awards, all-american). He was that good.

two different backers though...Hawk, OLB, Laurinitis MLB...I like both of them and if asked last year I think I would have said Hawk too....Now this year, seeing how important the MLB is to tOSU's defense, I respect what J.L did more now...
We have decent OLB's when Shazier and Sabino are healthy...but when they were both healthy, our defense still wasn't effective against the run due to poor MLB play...
Reason I think Glenn Carson is so underrated for us, is he's so solid at a very difficult position. He doesn't miss tackles, is a strong, strong player, and is very rarely out of position.
I wouldn't say he's great, or that he will ever be great, but IMO he's very, very good.
Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS
When your own paper calls PSU Linebacker U:
It was the voice of Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti that carried the furthest after penalties were levied in response to the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
I can respect the second graph. You even admitted that when Sabino was healthy, and I think he was your best LB at the time, your defense still wasn't good. His injury sucked and hurt, but many people from OSU are blaming the defense's inability to stop people on injuries. The defense wasn't strong when everyone was healthy.
I was a much bigger fan of Hawk over Laurinitis. It wasn't close to me. I know they are two totally different birds as well (no pun intended referring to birds and Hawk). To be honest, I think Animal Jr.s stats were inflated alot by the press box in Columbus. Doesn't mean I think he sucked, which would be a sheerly idiotic comment, but he was grossly overrated by many.
I get ya...I too was a bit more in the thinking that Hawk was better....he was all over the field, seemed to be in on every play...
I think we all take the MLB position a bit for granted..our OLB's tend to get the press due to all the things they get put in position to do...blitz, cover the edge, play in pass coverage, usually in nickel defense etc...
the MLB is the glue that holds the defense together, makes the calls, gets guys in the correct gap etc...It's been a long time that OSU hasn't had a suitable MLB....not saying they have all been great, but more than effective....
Now this year, with an absolute vacuum at MLB I appreciate the Little Animal's of the past a great deal more....If that middle isn't shored up and he isn't making the correct calls it shows what a defense can be diminished to....It wouldn't matter if we had Hawk and Diggs at OLB's this year, with our MLB position so inept it ALWAYS leaves one assignment not fulfilled...and the opposing teams have been pretty good at finding that assignment....Look at Purdue's first play from scrimmage, PA to suck Klein in (Klein and suck do go together) then pass to the RB Klein was supposed to cover...so right out of the gate, they knew the weakness and drilled it..
After that play, Klein didn't see much more playing time, only gave up one more offensive TD, which by the way was when Klein was in they ran the same bubble screen play 6 times on that drive and scored because Klein couldn't get to the play on the outside...great coaching against us on those two drives...
I'm guessing (hoping actually) that you won't get the chance to see Klein in the game...I know BOB already probably has 3 or 4 plays drawn up to take advantage of him...
Was reading Matthew Berry's column on fantasy football and came across this nugget that I feel is relevant to the conversation.
"Here's what the loss of Sean Lee means to Dallas: With Lee on the field, the Cowboys have allowed 3.98 yards per rush this season. Without Lee, that number is 5.0 yards per rush. In other words, without him they would rank third-worst in the league, while with him, they're basically the Bears (3.93)."
