You do realize Joe did basically nothing with these kids when on campus?
I know, right!? Everything about PSU football is basically the same now as it was before Joe got here.
Right it had such a good base that going undefeated three years out of five wasn't good enough to be voted National Champions. Notre Dame and Michigan had a pretty damn good base. PSU had an OK base. Paterno put PSU football on the map. Without JoePa, we would probably be on the same level as Pitt, which is pretty bad.
NittanyTerp, I'm not sure whether BoB can/should mention Joe, but all of us can and should! BoB only met Joe one or two times in his entire life....while we're the ones who have the memories of Joe. Thanks for your reminder concerning this year's senior class and several of their dads. Joe recruited these guys and molded them into men....into men.
Or we could have won more than two national titles the last 45 years. No one knows what would have happened.
Tressel was honored at osu game. Lifted upon shoulders. Ovation from fans. Joe deserved that sort of moment. So sad for him and his emotional pain on the way out. May sandusky rot.....
Joe just came at the right time (see TV and bowl exposure). Was he the best coach we have had? Yes, of course, but the other hall of famers weren't far behind and they had the program in a solid position for Paterno to build on.
I just don't like the under-appreciation that the other guys get. It's a shame, because they were great coaches.
5 of the previous 6 coaches before joe were in the HOF.... Only one who wasn't was the baseball coach who coached for 1 year

Yes X 1000
Obie has been the only one who HAS mentioned Joe the whole year. Radio guys confirmed last night that he mentioned him again in this week's PC, said it was a credit to Joe that this team has so much character. It was edited out if the official transcript apparently.
Joe does deserve far better than he's been getting the last year - far better - but Obie is the wrong guy to take your frustrations out on. You need to look further up.
I have as much respect, admiration and love for Joe as anyone here, seriously, but some of you guys need to get a grip bashing O'Brien on this. Some joker called in from Bellefonte last night on the post game raising hell about this as well, and still wouldn't back down when the hosts proved him wrong. Ridiculous.
Exactly. So let's not act like Joe was following a few stiff who had us wallowing in mediocrity. They were damn fine coaches and we had a bunch of tradition before Joe even coached his first game as the HC.
OB actually did mention on more than 1 occasion during the Spring/Summer (possibly Coaches tour) that he really liked the character of this team and it was a credit to the previous staff that recruited the kids.
I'm not old...but there is some real youth outing itself in this thread.
A few of these comments it is actually tough to believe people actually believe, and I say this not feeling OB needs to publicly acknowledge Joe at every turn.
I'm sure OB is happy Joe recruited great kids
Recruited talented kids
Took the program to new levels much higher levels in his time
Fought and influenced the advancement of the University structurally, academically, etc
And so many other things.....
Some real neivity showing...and/or basic denial throughout here.
OB and staff is utilizing the talent better than a staff passed its prime was, especially offensively. These guys have done a great job so far. I don't expect him to drop thanks at every turn at all. I also find it idiotic to see the downplaying of Joes extreme (intentional word choice) influence on a very large part of this University in all facets, not just football program.
Suck It Emmert!! and "Sorry for not being sorry for being a Penn Stater" - Philafan
I think Coach O'Brien has mentioned Joe's contribution in the past. He is now about the future, and is doing a very good job so far. It's a combination of great parents, Joe and his staff, and Coach O'Brien and his staff that produced this year. You can't take any of those things away!
Joe could have had that moment if he would have just walked away on his own. Unfortunately for Joe, he held on about 15 years too long.
Here's the problem with what the (seemingly) youngsters on here are posting in their downplaying of Joe. Without Joe Paterno, Penn State is just a state university in the middle of nowhere with an out of state student population of next to nothing. His contributions go far beyond the playing field. You seem to be missing that immense point as much as Louis Freeh, Mark Emmert, and the Board did.
As for his on field exploits, it's simply ignorant to compare any of the prior coaches to Joe. We were beating teams almost exclusively within the PA border with all before Rip Engle. Engle elevated the quality of the program to be sure, but nothing like the level Joe ascended it to. I really don't understand why the 247 board is so much unlike all other Penn State boards. The majority here just don't seem to understand this man's impact, and feel a need to run him down at every possible turn.
