According to this article they will. I am not surprised that the B10 hockey teams will get more because hockey is going to be a major item on the BTN, but I am very surprised at the amount. $2 million should pay for a lot... what great news this would be.
A $2 million TV deal should ease the sting of transitioning out of the popular WCHA.
$2mil PER SCHOOL...whoa. That's $12 mil per yr. The coffers must be overflowing. Should be interesting to see how the sport evolves as a league and the $$$ that ultimately comes from it.
I think hockey will end up being a money maker for PSU - especially since the intial building and scholarships was funded by Pegula.
They are also doing very well with getting additional endowments. You are right... things are looking very good right now.
At first i wasn't sure about Hockey, i don't follow the sport - but now i think i will have to get into it and see atleast one game a year at PSU.
I really think this will help the athletic dept as a whole....really excited.
Really, hockey is a natural fit for PSU. With the history of hockey in Philly and the way things started to take off with Mario in Pittsburgh, PA is becoming serious about hockey. It won't match MASS, or MINN, or MICH, but its making major progress.
This is a smart investment by the BT and BTN. $2 million/year for each team will help build the premiere college hockey league and entice other BT schools to consider get on the train. College ice hockey has been a niche sport dominated by traditional hockey schools that don't have the national brand appeal and I think that will change drastically over the next 10 years. the facilities and resources combined with the exposure these BT teams are going to have is going be fun to watch.
I was extremely thrilled when PSU announced a Division I hockey program. It's gonna be great for PSU, the B1G and the hockey community. We are already starting to hear chatter about PSU's new facility and what it means for the hockey community given our location.

It really is a lot of programming for the BTN. They are going from 15 games to 40+. Just awesome.
The BTN is really starting to fill out as a complete sports network.
With our investment in hockey we should be able to recruit in Canada, Europe, and the youth hockey hotbeds in the US.
Remember, Kentucky & UNC basketball were established as great programs by recruits from the northeast. No reason we can't do the same in hockey.
I agree that betting on hockey is smart for the B1G. College hockey = untapped market on a national scale...just need a distribution channel (btn), and generally a consolidated marketing voice....btn will be much more powerful than echa, hockey east, etc in promoting the sport more broadly.
Ive heard Doc and Eddie talk about PSU hockey on their NBC broadcasts numerous times this year...Makes sense since Olczyk's son plays for PSU.

Excellent post spud, as usual. I completely agree.
Can you imagine a Blue-White hockey game with one team labeled the Flyers and the other the Pens? Call out the riot squad...........for the stands, not the ice.
I said before... if they would hold that game in the Beav, it would be the end of the world.

I'm still surprised we only built the arena to hold 6000. I think we will eventually regret that down the road.
I don't know, I think that's being a bit optimistic. I think realistically 6000-ish is a good number where you can expect constant sellouts. Any bigger than that, and you risk having lots of empty seats during down years.
And speaking of unrealistic, I still wish we could find a way to add ND and BC to the conference. That's a solid 16 for football, and instant dominance for hockey.
Well, ND's new arena is only 5k. If you look around there are only 17 college hockey areas that have a capacity of 6k or more and some of those are multipurpose (like OSU and Wisky).
I think the opposite.
As discussed already, hockey at PSU has the potential to be HUGE! We're right in the middle of a hockey hotbed for recruiting purposes with the Northeast and Canada within close distance. We may start off a bit slow with filling it up but once the team starts getting some wins on a consistent basis, PIA will be packed.
Add in the fact that, Collegiate Hockey (especially with increased TV exposure) is becoming a much more viable route for many of the top guys. I think we (B1G schools) are going to have a decided recruiting advantage because of the B1G network. While ESPN doesn't care about hockey enough to put BC and the other top schools on the prime time TV. B1G schools can offer national exposure on top of great facilities, top coaching and an excellent education.
B1G hockey is gonna be HUGE BABY HUGE!!!!!!!!!!
So you're agreeing with me?
B1G Hockey is going to be awesome. Here is the trophy if you have not seen it. As more schools joins I hope they keep the orginal 6 sticks as reminders of the founding members.
That would make a nice statue of some sort, but it's a terrible trophy.
Very much disagree - it's a fantastic trophy.
You have six symbolic hockey skate blades (representing the six schools) surrounding a hockey puck,
I think it's modern, gorgeous, and very much appropriate.
I like the trophy, but I wish they would have had a cup instead. Way cooler and it would have a chance to become iconic.
I like the trophy and what it symbolizes.
