No. Other teams are allowed to freely recruit players until the academic semester starts Aug 27. A player can transfer and be eligible for the 2012 season as long as they don't participate in a game. Practice doesn't count as far as I can tell. It's not a competitive activity. But still, unless they transfer to a place of complete worthlessness, guys should announce their moves prior to the begin of summer camps on Aug 6. We should know 99% of the activity by this weekend...probably before then.

That doesnt make sense. So if they enroll in school, attend classes for first few weeks, suit up for the game, but dont play, he can still transfer. Im pretty sure its practice on August 6. That is what most have said all along.
Once they practice, they count for the year.

Then we go thru the same circus next year. The NCAA has really put academics over football here at PSU.

I've always understood it as playing in a game (ie burning the redshirt) and only recently a select few around here say practice.

Practice is not a competitive event per the NCAA. I don't know where the 'practice' rumor started, but it's very clearly stated in the sanctions that as long as players do not participate in a game, they are eligible to transfer without penalty...including during the season. It's also stated that programs have until Aug 27 to recruit PSU players. Why would they be allowed to recruit until Aug 27 if practice starts Aug 6? B/C practice means nothing.

CBS had a story with analysis indicating that after the first practice, they could not play on another team in 2012.

Sorry, I guess that is the wrong interpretation. Apologies for spreading misinformation.

  • How exactly does one transfer mid-semester in college? These kids aren't exactly taking a secondary education core curriculum in which classes are very similar. The classes and/or the work done in those classes isn't going to easily merge with what another University has in place.

Serves you right for paying attention to mainstream media.

My guess is in-season moves unless the schools are mirror images means the year they spent not playing here does not count towards their eligibility

IIRC, you can transfer 10 days into the academic semester and still gain academic admittance for the current semester. So anyone who does not participate in the Ohio game could technically transfer for the same season. Others who have not participated but declare a transfer later in the season can still finish their academic semester at PSU, but they will not be penalized a year of eligibility when they go elsewhere. It's almost like a free RS year.

Bottom line...all of these crazy scenarios are extremely unlikely to happen. 99% of the kids who will transfer will announce prior to August 6 due to the logistics of becoming integrated into their new environments. If any others decide to transfer, they will do so after the season. I'd be shocked if a Late summer or Mid-season transfer occurs , but it's possible.

That SHOULD absolutely be the case. How do you go through plays and calls for 20 days then have a guy go to OSU who we play. Doesn't make much sense to me they could practice and then switch

  • Little Fera update.

Anthony was at the workout this morning. He will meet with OB sometime today/tomorrow not sure a decision will come from the meeting mainly because he has to finish his summer class which isn't over until next week.

The main reason for the visit to Texas was driven by AF's father. His parents want him to finish things up at Texas. If AF stays at PSU he will be going against his parents wishes. OB is well aware of the circumstances.

    Good Luck OB

At what point does a kid/young man tell the parents, 'I know what you want, but this is my life and my decision. I respect your wishes, but this has little/nothing to do with you.'

  • Exactly. It smacks of parents trying to control his life to the extreme if this is the case.

He's not living at PSU? Or at Texas should he go there?

Tough spot to be in. I remember going at it with my parents one night at 2am while I was home over break. You are so use to being on your own, responsible for being where you need to be and when you want to be there. Didn't see it from my parents POV. Both sides have to recognize the shift in control, mom and dad need to let the kid ultimately make the decision, but kid should consult and value parents perspective.

Its one thing if your back at home and your parents do not want you out at all hours of the night.

But it is not constructive to force your kid to transfer schools because you want them to (if this is indeed the case and there are no extenuating circumstances with Fera).
