Column: Looking for hope

Maintaining their sanity during what will be a crucial offseason for Penn State could simply be a matter of outlook for the program's fans, writes Jeff Rice.

  • Very spot on. This season to me has just flown by as it seems to every CFB season. Now we dont have a bowl game to look forward too.

I just really hope we can keep O'Brien. Obviously that is #1 priority. If we lose O'Brien that could be the nail in the coffin of the program for the foreseeable future (assuming we'd lose most of our 2013 class, more current players, coaches, etc...).

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

  • Nice article, Jeff. I don't see any point in getting worked up over what could or may happen. Let the chips fall where they may. There's nothing we can do to convince someone to stay, nor should we have to. Players and coaches who want to be a part of Penn State will stay. Those who would rather chase the greener grass elsewhere will do so. There's no point in worrying. That will just make it a longer and tough off season. Just support who stays with us.

  • I never felt that BOB or any of the players had to make statements that they aren't going anywhere. Mostly because such statements are effectively meaningless.

I believe that whatever happens, BOB is staying for at least one more year. And to me, that's all that matters for now. We'll lose players, but he and his coaches have developed bonds with them to the point where we will survive once more.

But it's hard, Jeff. It's going to be a long 8+ months.

  • The proverbial "hitting the nail on the head" article.

    Very nice, Jeff.

  • Ah Mr. Rice you never fail to provide an excellent article.

  • Well done, Jeff.

  • Great article and great ability to put into words what is on every person's mind. The next 8 months are going to be full of rumor and conjecture and analyzing the context of every statement. Let's hope we come out strong on the other side.

  • As usual, another really good article. It's going to be a long off season but I'm keeping the rosé colored glasses on. I don't think we lose any players that matter and I think Obrien is in this for the long haul. That said, we can't worry about something over which we have no control.

  • Thanks Jeff. O'Brien has made a huge investment in this journey...he brought in an entire coaching staff and has held this team together by open and honest communication. He held his tongue in the media when the transfers happened but you know if you sat down in a private conversation, you'd hear what you saw on his face..wasn't happy. This is a man of character...not alot of those guys around anymore. He's in a battle...and I can't see him walking away from this challenge anytime soon. OB walking would be worse then Redd or Brown leaving and I don't think he could live with himself if he even considered that as an option. He's staying and he's keeping his army together. AND he's bringing in some huge reinforcements with his commits in 2013. I don't need either pair of glasses to see where this story is going...
