Penn State coach Bill O'Brien took care of the offense at his last few coaching stops. This season, he's running the whole show on game days.

  • I, for one, was very skeptical when O'Brien was hired. Only knew him as the guy who argued with Tom Brady (which I happened to like...). But as the months have passed, I don't think we could have found a better coach to lead this program into the next era. Couldn't be happier with O'Brien! I see O'Brien continuing to improve... and so will Penn State...

  • I think the article is spot on, Jeff. Good job. I was skeptical of BOB and his hiring until I heard his intro presser to the media on that cold Saturday morning in January. I was sold after that, especially when it was noted that he was keeping LJ Sr. and Vandy.

The team was just flat out gassed and ran out of energy/emotion in week 1.

Week 2 we played well enough to win the game and the offense put the kicking game in position to make a handful of field goals that would've put the game way out of reach had they all been made. We didn't connect on any of them.

Navy and Temple we dominated the game on both sides of the ball for the duration of the game.

BOB and this staff are doing a solid job with the guys who chose to stay. I hope they continue to improve as coaches and help this team continue to win games and improve on a weekly basis. With the B1G down this year, BOB and company have a chance to really make some noise this year, IMO. Hopefully we can win 5 of our 8 conference games. That'd tickle my pickle given the circumstances we are up against. There's no denying that BOB "gets it" when people reference PSU, the football program, etc. He may not be a true Penn Stater but he's a Penn Stater in my books and I hope he rights this ship through these sanctions and leads us back to national prominence shortly thereafter. I'm proud to have BOB as our coach and you all should be too!

  • Agree with all the comments! The hire of Bill Obrien was the only thing that the AD and BOT did right after the scandal. He has done and said all the right things. I said before that this team is fun to watch and and very like able. I think we might actually win a game or two that we are not expected to win!

  • Wish I had the same enjoyment of BOB as the rest of these posters. Personally I think he was outcoached in game 1, and has been making some big bonehead decisions (Hodges as puntreturner, Jones as TE) this season. Also the reason why the team is not doing so hot in the 4th quarter is because BOB wanted quality reps over quantity (in theory it's a good idea, but it doesn't get the kids in shape to finish the game strong). I think this is a very good article to remember that BOB is a rookie head coach, and alot of people, especially me, should try to be easier on him and give him room to improve.

Some good observations. I really can't deny your position. Frank Solich is now in his 8th year at Ohio after being canned by Nebraska for a dire 9-3 season!

The Ohio game exposed alot of PSUs "rookie" mistakes. Against VA we dominated the entire game. VA was truly a team loss. Ficken stands out, but if James doesn't blow his assignment on the blocked PTA it's at least a tie game.

Defense on 3rd down gave up 11/12 3rd down conversions in the 2nd half alone!

The O couldn't sustain drives, and 10 of 'em started in VA territory!

    And some blown coaching calls.

This team should be 4-0. We're not. We're 2-2. But I've witnessed this team in all facets from coaching to game management to D, to O to Spcial teams improve every week, without a doubt.

We've got a lot of young studs to build the program on, and some great Senior leadership in all 3 facets of the game. WE ARE....
