Column: Leadership finally emerges

Penn State's new leadership can restore the public's trust if it follows the example being shown by Nittany Lion players and coaches.

  • Very well said, great article, Jeff.

On a side note, Zordich looks like a bodybuilder with that Arnold-esque chest. What a monster.

  • Very well written. These guys will succeed in life off of the football field because of what they were put through. In the world we live in, with all of the turbulance, its great to see our future through these men and others looking pretty good.

  • The maturity aspect is really key.

College athletes have to grow up much quicker than others. Normal college students don't have agents breathing down their necks, or were "recruited" constantly coming out of high school.

Now Emmert has forced these kids to stand up and be the people who understand what their role is in the history of a football program. Really have to feel for them.

  • Very well written article Jeff. I have but one point that I do not agree with. And I don't feel it was meant to sound this way, but I do not believe that the fans lost sight of their priorities. We are a family. I don't think, for one second, that Penn State fans would have encouraged a cover-up. We are a proud bunch, but I will never believe that we would ever put a child's welfare ahead of winning a football game. Success with honor still radiates from each one of us- alumni, current students, etc. The actions of a few men are the real problem here. I still do not believe that everything is really known in the case and I hope it is revealed in the coming months. We will rise again to be the proud storied program that I grew up watching. #westillare

WE ARE! And we will always be...

  • This is what I thought would happen with this football team. This, these guys are what the student body, alum, and fan base can be proud of and rally around.

Great job fellas and good luck this year!

even worse for visiting teams to the Beav...

a fan base that has a cause is extremely hard to play in front of. A fan base that is united and has a cause is down right nasty to play in front of.

What has happened is that not only is the football team bonding together. 600k+ alumni, and millions more fans are all united to support the kids who are staying. It's going to be a very uncomfortable place to play on Saturdays. If people thought Ohio State 2005, or Nebraska 2002 were loud. Just wait. IMO, you haven't heard anything yet.

    Agreed PSU30jr...

Not sure Jeff is implying that the fans encouraged a coverup. But it is confusing as to why Jeff seems to be indicating that the fans "lost focus". My viewpoint hasn't changed. PSU was (and is and will be) a great university both academically and athletically. I follow the news of both aspects of my school closely. I am not proud of the way our leaders have handled this situation, but I will support the school and encourage changes where I think they're needed.

That said, I'm very proud of the players who indeed have been leaders through this along with Coach O'Brien. I find it very interesting that through the last 60 years or so of history, that leadership and common sense seldom seems to come from the top, but from those where it's least expected. Now it's our time to be leaders! WE (still) ARE!
