Column: Culture aids recovery

Football wasn't what got Penn State into one of the worst scandals in recent memory, but the Nittany Lions were what helped the university recover.

  • Excellent article. Penn State does have a culture but it is a good thing. The culture produces a remarkable fan base that supports its teams and loves its university. The culture produces a team like this years football team that is beyond words. The culture produces excellence in the classroom and on the field . The culture produces loyalty and love for each other. Yes, success with honor is alive and well at PennState.

  • I wish the offensive captain and defensive captain each year would wear number 9 and 42 respectively. That could become a really cool tradition. They only thing that sucks is that OL can't wear 9.

  • My father was a 40 year PSU employee, I was born and raised in that culture. I am damn proud of my roots and the family tradition of graduating with a Penn State degree. Jeff you hit it on the head "That culture produced young men like Michael Mauti and Michael Zordich, produced a full offense and defense of academic all-conference players, produced a group of seniors that showed the world that commitment and character Jaworski talked about. And football was the vehicle. Football and the unifying bonds that come with it -- signs on billboards and in the windows of local businesses and the cheers of the crowd on game days -- were what helped this community put the pieces back together after Sandusky shattered it"
Today more than ever before "WE ARE PENN STATE!

  • Outstanding article! This captures the true essence of the issue that occurred and the prevailing leadership and courage that followed. Thank you, Jeff!

  • another great article jeff! and in my mind, penn state has not changed one bit, which is why the school is so special and why so many of us are attached to it for life. This season was so refreshing for so many reasons, and it was the first year where I only focused on the PSU team and had no interest what happened with other teams.

  • I will never forgive our leadership for blaming the culture. thanks for writing this Jeff.

  • The leaders: Mauti and Zordich and the 29 other members of the Sr. class were a product of the PSU Football culture that was nurtured by Joe Paterno for 61 years. Do I think the 2012 team would have faired better if Joe were still around to coach them? No I don't.

But I do think that had these young men not been under Joes program for 4 years, that no coach could have accomplished the season we had in 2012.

I love what BO'B has done this year. But these Seniors are a product of Joe's system. These Seniors are Joe's men!

Very true! Hoping that we see vindication for Joe in the not-to-distant future. I see unraveling of the piling-on mentality beginning to happen, and there seems to be more "good press" about Penn State in recent days. I hope that when more of the truth emerges and more details are brought to light that Joe's legacy will be restored to a place of honor.

BoB was the right man for the job at the right time. Couldn't be happier with the man that took over the reigns of this program - He is COTY in my book. But we must acknowledge that the foundation he inherited was rock-solid...and the credit for that goes to Joe.
